I have been teaching French Horn, piano and composition privately for about nine years, mainly in Snohomish and King counties. I have also coached horn players in local school bands during this time, as well as helping students with learning disabilities. There are many difficulties that students encounter when studying music, and I want to help you turn weaknesses into strengths, and help you find out where your greatest strengths (and interests) lie in music. I'll work with you to help you understand your own musical desires and goals, so that you can get the most out of your lessons. I am committed to understanding each of my students, and to sharing my love of music with each one of them. I teach French Horn, piano, music theory and composition as well as songwriting. I was eight years old when I started taking piano lessons in Tacoma, WA. When I was 12, I discovered that I had perfect pitch while playing church hymns with my dad. This ability has served me well on a number of occasions. I discontinued formal piano lessons when I started college, but I continued to play piano on a nearly daily basis from that point on, keeping my technical skills at a very advanced level. I played trumpet in school bands starting in the 5th grade, and switched to French Horn in the 8th grade. The appeal of the horn may have had something to do with its rich, warm sound, its intricacy and complexity, and the demands that it placed on me to play with a high degree of pitch accuracy. I loved the challenge of playing accurately on the horn then, and I still do. As a horn student, I have studied with Jacqueline Shannon, Kathy Farner, Kathy Colton, Lawrence Lowe, Elizabeth Ward, Jeff Snedeker, Rodger Burnett and Stacie Eliason. As a horn performer, I have played with community and regional professional orchestras in the Seattle area, Central Washington, Olympia, in the Tacoma Youth Symphony, and in numerous ensembles in college.

I have studied music at Tacoma Community College, Brigham Young University and Central Washington University. I received Bachelor of Arts in Music at Central Washington University. I plan on attending graduate school in the future, focusing on music composition and film composition, as well as French Horn and piano performance.

As a music composer, I have written works for many different ensembles, choral works, solo piano pieces, and works for solo instruments. I am drawn to rich harmonies and beautiful melodies, as well as interesting timbres and musical variety, in my own music and that of the music I listen to. I am easily able to visualize music in color, and I have a thorough understanding of how the elements of music combine together to affect emotions in listeners. This is one of the reasons that I am currently pursuing film and media composition.

As a student, teacher, performer and music composer, I know that there are countless musical topics that students are curious about. I feel that students should feel free to ask any question in the field of music, even if it may seem like a "dumb" question. I value the sincerity and passion for good music that so many students have. I will help you acquire the knowledge and skills that you need, so that you can see more clearly your own musical goals. Previous and current students I have, each have made improvements in their own playing and knowledge of music, some of whom have made vast improvements in their playing and knowledge of music.

As I have taught music privately for a little while now, and can reasonably compare how I teach with other instructors that I know well, I can say with certainty that there are at least a few areas of my teaching that are somewhat unique and highly beneficial for certain students, if not most students. I value ear training and using flashcards with beginner students quite a bit, and am fond of teaching not only the "nuts and bolts" of music, but also, how music "works", such that a student of mine can write their own music if they have the desire to do so. I also try to assign a wide variety of music for each student (which differs according to each student's musical interests, abilities, and areas of their playing that need to be improved), especially as they improve and approach the intermediate levels of playing. There are many reasons I do this, but for the student, it is very important that they do not feel particularly "bored" with the music they are playing. I also have found that students who have a more sensitive nature tend to be more comfortable with the way I teach, as I reserve higher, stricter expectations for more advanced, older students. I also try to always be as patient, kind, and considerate with every student as I can be. Lastly, I highly encourage questions and feedback at any time during a lesson, and I try to create an atmosphere where the student feels comfortable to do so.

I accept students from five years old on up, but I prefer horn students to be at least ten years old before starting lessons, unless they have noticeably greater abilities to focus for a certain period of time than other children their age.

*** Lesson Details ***
I have always wanted people I interact with to be, as a general rule, comfortable and relaxed in any setting. This certainly applies to the students I teach. However, students can expect that musical improvement will only occur through daily practice and constant effort. That being said, I am more interested in helping students overcome any difficulties in this area through reviewing their own practice habits and motivations, rather than using harsh discipline. It is crucial that students see the connection between their own practicing and musical improvement. Once this occurs, they can take more responsibility for their own progress with that added awareness.

The material chosen for each student will vary considerably, depending on their current knowledge, experience and ability level, innate abilities, musical tastes and priorities. The progress that is made will, to a large extent, be determined by the student's practice habits and natural ability. However, over the course of a few months or so, students should see noticeable improvement in their own musical abilities, if they practice and pay attention during lessons.

-French Horn: pencil, mute, tuner/metronome, maintenance/cleaning supplies, some books depending on if it is a first lesson, etc. I bring my own horn, and expect the student to have their horn. I also expect them to have a music journal to use as a reference for practicing and keeping track of their progress. Occasionally, I will employ a recording device for the purpose of assessing personal teaching effectiveness, or for the student to evaluate their progress/record their practicing.

Regarding method of instruction/teaching style, I am student oriented, and tend to adapt to each student's personality and learning style. I tend to teach more in the classical genres, with some pop/film music thrown in for variety (from time to time). I prefer using the Bastian, Alfred, and/or John Thompson piano methods, and Pottag-Hovey, Maxime-Alphonse books, etc. for French Horn.

Ben is great if you want your child to love piano. He is a fun teacher and was very patient with my son, who was a bit turned off from music due to prior experiences. He actually wrote songs for my son to play since he needed more time at the beginner level. He was great when my son was nervous at recitals and festivals and had strategies to help him deal with nerves.

I have been tutoring trumpet for nine years. My tutoring approach is first to determine the student's purpose, goals, and objectives and then determine his/her current performance level. Next, we begin instruction to take the student to the next level and beyond. I offer trumpet news and tips on my blog.

I have a B.A. degree in English Literature with a minor in music, from the University of Washington. While an undergraduate student at U.W., I was a scholarship student in the Husky Band; marched at football games, the Tournament of Roses Parade, and the Rose Bowl game; played in pep band at basketball games; and played in a brass ensemble. Also, I played in orchestras for musicals and opera. In high school, I was a member of the Texas All-State Band.

15, I began my fifth year of teaching brass instruments for two elementary bands at Skyview Jr. High School in Bothell. I cover homes from about I-90 northward on the Seattle and Bellevue sides and in Southwest Snohomish County. When I tutor youths in a residence, an adult must be present. When students live in more distant locations, we can meet at Ted Brown Music.

I realize that voice lessons can be REALLY scary and I totally understand why, especially for kids and beginners! I do my best to use modern psycology and technology to help my beginning students feel confortable in what can be a frightening new endeavor.

Have you tried lessons before and felt unsuccessful?

Not all students learn the same way and for years voice teachers have been treating every student as an aural learner. What I have found is that students with a history of struggling with matching pitch simply need to be taught in a different manner. That is why I now ask students to take a voluntary learning style inventory prior to their first lesson.

Visual Learner? Not a problem when "Adam" started with me he could only match pitch 30% of the time. But after finding that he needed to see concepts in order to learn them I have now made all of his lesson visually based and he is now averaging 90% pitch accuracy 3 months later.

Kinisthetic Learner? I had the hardest time helping "Clark" learn new music until we realized that by taking the time to have him play his parts himself on the piano he could learn them in minutes. He just is a person that learns by doing and now that we know that, music has become so much less frustrating for him.

Physical Learner? With "Steve" the traditional 'visualization' style of teaching that most voice teachers start with just wasn't helping him improve his sound and reach the high notes we both knew he had. After we figured out that he needed large muscle movements to understand concepts I added the use of a resistance band to his lessons. He has had so much success with this technique that he 'stole' my resistance band so he could use it in recording sessions and before he got on stage.

The stories just go on and on.

Students help structure their lessons by providing a general overview of their goals during their first lesson. Just as not everyone's voice sounds the same, neither does everyone's lesson!

A typical lesson begins with vocal warm-ups specifically targeted to strengthen the students technique and help them learn more about their voices capabilities. Next students work on songs of their choosing, that help them develop the freedom of voice, control, stamina and overall vocal health that they will need to be confident in their performing.

Additional opportunities for performance are provided for students as desired. These may include Karaoke Nights (for adult beginners), no-stress recitals, studio sing-a-longs, community choirs and small roles in local productions.

My voice teacher Carla H is a very good teacher. She is pleasant, has patience, and gives me a confidence.I am a senior citizen and my voice to improve from zero to ....... 1st teacher to identify my problem!

I have struggled w/ my break/passagio for sometime and would work on a song with my high range for 1-2months and then loose my voice on performance. Carla imediatly identified my problem and knows exactly how to fix it. I have been seeing improvement the past few weeks. What more can I ask for!

Morgan is the best singing teacher I've ever had! She is kind, patient, understanding, and she cares a lot about vocal health. Morgan has helped me grow immensely in just a few months. My range has improved and my break is much better than it used to be. I used to have no high range at all and now I can touch a high E flat! I can't recommend her highly enough!

I have been playing instruments and performing live since I was 11 years old. Initially trained in classical piano I added guitar to my musical palette at the age of 14. In college I spent time continuing my studies in both piano and guitar and received a bachelors of fine arts with a concentration in jazz guitar from Columbia College Chicago in 2004.

I have since moved to Seattle, WA and have become a regular fixture in the music community as a guitar and theory teacher, songwriter/guitarist of the pop rock bands Electric NoNo and Warren Dunes, and co founder and producer of the The Big Ass Boom Box Festival Seattle and the Seattle X Southwest showcase at SXSW Festival in Austin. I have released five studio albums that have received regional and national attention, toured regionally and nationally, and perform regularly at Seattle ma
instays including The Crocodile, The Sunset, Columbia City Theater, and many more. My band recently performed at The Upstream Music Festival in downtown Seattle in March 2017.

I am so impressed with Jared’s ability to teach me in a way I wanted to learn. I am probably the most difficult student Jared ever had. I wasn’t particularly interested in strumming. I just wanted to play in a way that the songs would be recognized without any accompaniment. I was also very specific about the pieces I wanted to learn. Jared was always so patient with me and I suspect he spent a great deal of time outside of class figuring everything out for me.

I had been playing for 25+ years and wanted to learn some applied theory and some jazz. I made a great decision choosing Jared. I took lessons from Jared for 3 years, it was a great experience!

A few key things about Jared I want to share:
- He is always prepared and does his homework
- Incredibly knowledgably and patient
- He finds a way to explain things so they make sense
- Always goes above and beyond what I expected
- He provides materials to aid in learning from videos, backing tracks, tablature and musical notation
- Always smiling and happy to be teaching music

I easily recommend Jared as a teacher to players looking to learn music from beginner though to advanced level. It was an absolute pleasure to be Jared’s student.

Jared is patient, encouraging, extremely knowledgable, and the perfect teacher for me. I had learned some chords from Youtube but Jared's style of teaching is to not only teach what you need to know now, but set up for later stages of guitar playing.
Jared breaks down songs into pieces, and provides a slowed down recording to play along with. I find this the absolute best part about practicing, to play along with Jared's recording. It also means if I haven't played a song for a while I can go back to the recording for the strum/structure.
Without Jared I don't think I would have stuck with the guitar, and after almost 18 months Jared is encouraging me to explore the electric guitar and take the lessons in a new direction.
There are regular performances with all the students, it's no pressure, and I haven't had one go perfectly yet while on the actual stage (in practice they are perfect) but they give students an opportunity to perform in an environment where they can make mistakes and just get out there and try it!

I would strongly recommend Jared as a guitar teacher - the recordings, the encouragement, the performances, he is a very dedicated teacher.

Music has been a special part of my life since I was 4 years old. I took lessons for 10 years and continued to play in college for the Naval Academy Women's Glee Club as the accompanist. While with the Glee Club, I had the opportunity and honor to sing for two Presidents and play piano for one, and sing with Beyonce as part of Obama's Inauguration Celebration.

I specialize in teaching children as I put a great emphasis on fun! I want students to have joy playing before it gets difficult in order to encourage them to play longer. Part of that is I encourage learning songs that they are interested in tandem with the course so they continue to love what they play.

Hello! I am a vocal music teacher with over 15 years of experience in singing and performing. I received my BA in music (voice) from the University of Washington in 2012, and my MA in teaching (with a choral endorsement) from the University of Puget Sound in 2016. There's a couple things I'm really good at and that's helping people find their UNIQUE voice and how to break out of their comfort zones and take their performing and singing to the next level. Singing WELL is about so much more than technique. While I teach technique and all the basics, the really fun part is discovering what you're made of and what your unique voice can do. Together we can discover what it means to not just sound good, but to WOW people and more importantly, wow yourself.

I have spent my entire life figuring out how to sing with passion, with real emotion and rawness, how to write songs that paint a picture, how to go beyond my self limiting beliefs and reach goals I never thought I could. And in so discovering how to do this for myself I now teach others how to do it too.

I love Megan, she is amazing. She has helped me develop a lot since we started, and has managed to help me open up more. Her strategies are really helpful, and are worth working on with her.

Megan is very talented, so I was nervous about my first lesson. But she she immediately began to ease my fears and make me feel comfortable. After just three lessons, she’s already helping me to increase my confidence and expand my range. I appreciate that her goal is to help me reach MY goal and even beyond! I’m excited for what’s ahead!

Megan has been patiently working with me, a true beginner. I have progressed from barely knowing how to sing on pitch to singing on pitch (mostly.. still working on doing it within songs) within months. She does the right amount of technique exercises along with singing songs to get you to have proper form to get those notes out correctly. You will not be disappointed.

I am a drummer/percussionist with years of experience and a degree in performance from the University of Oregon.

Everybody has a unique voice, so why shouldn’t drums be the same? Your hands are unique to you, so the lessons you receive should be tailored to each student.

I believe in finding a targeted plan, agreed upon by the student and myself, to achieve whatever goal the student has in mind. Whether that be just a casual playing at home or performing in cafes or arena shows, I tailor a plan that works best for each student.

As a musician I perform regularly with numerous rock and jazz bands, orchestras, theater groups and small classical groups throughout the state of Oregon and Washington.
