Alexander A.

Tacoma, WA

About Alexander

My name is Alex, and my passion is teaching music. I offer clients a unique learning experience with customized lesson plans and personalized attention to fit your exact goals and needs. These aren’t just words to me…they are a commitment I make to everyone that I have the pleasure of working with.

Here’s who I am…

I earned a Bachelor's of Music from Berklee College of Music where I studied Bass Performance and Composition. I have years of experience playing upright and electric bass in many styles such as rock, jazz, orchestral, and big band. I’ve studied a variety of instruments ov
er the last 20 years including guitar, bass, drums, ukulele, and piano.

Here’s what I can do for you…

I will give you my full attention and unyielding patience with each and every lesson. Together we will explore the principals of music that will enable you to learn to play in any style you choose to study. Ultimately my job is not to teach you to play, but to show you how to teach yourself. I will arm you with a thorough understanding of technique and theory.

I love working with kids and adults. I love brand new players with no experience as well as seasoned players who just want to fill in some gaps in their knowledge. Whatever your age, and wherever you’re at with your playing, I hope you will give me the chance to help you have more fun and confidence in music.

Every player I work with gets access to a personal online Lesson Journal where you can see my notes from our lessons, do homework from your “Stuff to work on” lists, and access my entire digital library! Every lesson is designed just for you.

Let’s get started…

You can take lessons at my studio, in your home, or online via Skype.

For lessons in my studio, I can provide instruments and amplifiers for both of us.

There is ample seating for parents to sit in on lessons. Parking is available in the driveway.

You’re going to love your lessons!
-Alex

Alex was wonderful and my daughter enjoyed her lesson. He is very clear and responsive to questions. He helped her figure out what she needed and wanted from her lessons so no time was wasted. Alex has a good way about him when communicating with his students and my daughter is looking froward to her next lesson. Excellent teacher!!

Sami C.

Puyallup, WA

About Sami

My name is Sami, I am so very passionate about music. I write songs for a wonderful rock band named Blue Helix. When I'm not rocking out with the band I enjoy teaching others how to play guitar, Sing with power and enthusiasm, and stage presence. I have many years experience teaching music, mainly guitar and vocals. The trick i find is to first off teach timing, and teach Pitch. Performance comes with confidence. I have many different methods on how to train my students, but I have an advantage because i have a recording studio at my backside. With that I have all the equipment and lighting ne
eded to set up a fun and realistic environment for a student to develop their music passions. I look forward to teaching you.

*** Lesson Details ***
Lessons depend on the level of experience the student already has. If we are talking students whom already now how to play guitar , sing or have live stage presence in the bag, then we work on what we feel could be better. That could be playing guitar solos, to singing harmonies, to understanding how to connect and engage your audience. Now BEGINNERS, my favorite...we start off learning the basics..for guitar, how to read Tablature (which is a number guiding system to train you how to play guitar in 30 minutes) We begin on learning how to read tab, then we start learning the songs you want to learn. By doing this we then play to a program called pro Tab that I plug throughout a sound system to give the student a feeling of playing with the actual band, and believe me that's what it will feel like. We have fun while learning. My students get to enjoy the many instruments and varieties of equipment I've obtained in my studio so that they may learn what it is they are passionate about. Lesson guidelines again varies depending on the level of ability of the student.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Guitars, amps, basses, drums, pa system, mics, everything you can imagine, even Digiridoos!!!

*** Travel Equipment ***
I can provide any and all equipment needed for vocal, guitar or recording lessons.

*** Specialties ***
Rock, Acoustic, alternative, as well as Solo artist song writing. I'm very experienced with Music recording, as well as Vocal and guitar performance, stage presence and showmanship. I teach Bass, Guitar, Vocal, recording, speech, and songwriting.

We signed up for lessons with Sami for our son as a Christmas gift. Sami has been awesome. He was able to quickly evaluate where our son was at and focus the lessons to him immediately. Sami was easy to communicate with as a parent and feel 100% confident that our son will continue to love guitar because of the time Sami spent with him.

Highly recommend him from beginner to experienced guitar, vocal, performance and music writing.

Kendra M.

Federal Way, WA

About Kendra

I have been teaching percussion lessons since 1994. Outside of my home studio, I have also taught within the Auburn (WA) and Tucson (AZ) public schools as a percussion and music specialist, at The University of Rio Grande (OH) as an affiliate faculty member, at Ohio University and The University of Arizona as a Graduate Teaching Assistant, at Interlochen Arts Camp (MI) as the All-State percussion instructor, and at New England Music Camp (ME) as a faculty member.

I have performed with numerous professional orchestras including the Tucson, Phoenix, and Juneau (AK) symphonies and was the prin
cipal percussionist and timpanist for the Sierra Vista Symphony Orchestra in Arizona. My volunteer performances have included churches, adult care facilities, children's museums, universities, public schools, bookstores, and farmer's markets.

I have a Doctorate of Musical Arts in Percussion Performance with a minor in Ethnomusicology. I have a strong interest in percussion instruments of many cultures including Trinidad, where I studied steel drums in 2005, and Ghana, West Africa where I studied drumming, dance, and the Gyil (Ghanaian xylophone) in 2006.

In 2009, I was awarded a grant from the University of Arizona to travel to Appleton, Wisconsin for the Zeltsman Marimba Festival. Other awards I have earned include the Concerto Competition from Western Washington University, the Music Advisory Board Scholarship from The University of Arizona, and the Graduate Achievement Award in Service from Ohio University.

*** Lesson Details ***
In your first lesson we will discuss your musical goals and interests. If applicable, you should bring along any music that you are currently practicing, have played most recently, and/or would like to perform. If you are learning a new instrument, we will go over the basic technique and I will give you some exercises to practice at home.

Whether you are new to percussion or have been playing for years, your lessons will be tailored to help you reach your full potential and get the most out of your musical experiences. If you are interested in solo performance, we can perform together within the community. (I especially enjoy performing at care centers, farmers markets and in church services.) If you are interested in performing in ensembles, competing in solo/ensemble competitions, or studying music in college, I can help you prepare a successful audition. If you are interested in playing drums or marimba because they are fun, I can introduce you to new opportunities and impart knowledge that will inspire you and continue to open your mind.

I am patient and creative in my approach to tackling challenges in improving technique, sight-reading, and musicality. I believe that music performance should be an enjoyable and energizing experience for the performer and the listener. My life has been deeply touched by the art of sound and I hope to pass on this passion.

I have a large library of method books, solos and CDs available to check out and peruse between lessons. You are expected to purchase method books and solos that you will be using long-term. Spending quality time with your instrument between lessons should be enjoyable; I will provide you with direction on how to effectively use your at-home practice time while still having fun playing music.

*** Studio Equipment ***
In my studio, I have a drum set, marimba, timpani, snare drums, practice pads, a tenor (lead) steel drum, auxiliary percussion instruments, Ghanaian (African) drums and gyili (African xylophones).

*** Specialties ***
I specialize in orchestral percussion (snare drum, timpani, xylophone, cymbals, triangle, etc.), marimba, African drumming (especially Ghanaian drumming) and drum set. I also play steel drums and guitar.

Kendra is an effective educator because she is very detail oriented without being uptight or too picky. She has great ideas for teaching, knows how to develop them, and offers them to students and the community. In addition, she creates fun learning opportunities open to the pubic, where anyone can come and enjoy drumming. This shows that she is a good leader and wants to share her passion for music with other people. To me, these are two of Kendra's greatest strengths. We are lucky to have her in the Puget Sound area.

Hand Drums · In studio
Kendra has provided lessons on the African drum for a year. In that time I stumbled from basic novice to something far beyond that. As my technique improved Kendra gently continued to move the bar and set high expectations, all the while offering encouragement and understanding my learning style. I looked forward to the lessons, knowing each one would offer another challenge. I now have a much better sense of what the hand drum is all about and look forward to learning even more.

Allison P.

Tacoma, WA

About Allison

Hi! My name is Allison and I'm an opera singer. I fell madly in love with music and singing as a young child and was bitten by the opera bug at age 15. Ever since seeing that first opera, I've never looked back. I did lead roles in my high school musicals, then got my Bachelor of Music and my Master of Music degrees in Classical Voice and Opera Performance both from competitive conservatories. Ever since graduation, I've been lucky enough to make my work as a professional singer. I've traveled all over the country and even internationally bringing this amazing art form to audiences. Now
I feel like my dream has come true because I get to do what I love: sing! Pavarotti said, "I think a life in music is a life beautifully spent and this is what I have devoted my life to." I feel so lucky to have a life in music and now I want to share everything I've learned with you.

Students of mine regularly are chosen for lead roles in school and extracurricular musicals and operas and score very high in school music evaluations.

*** Lesson Details ***
During a voice lesson with me, we'll warm up and do vocal exercises for the first half, then we'll learn new music together or work on music you've already learned. I love teaching all styles of classical music and working in many different languages including French, German, Italian, English, and more. I teach lyric diction of all of these languages and the styles of each composer. Above all, lessons with me are relaxed and really fun!

*** Studio Equipment ***
Music room w/ electronic piano and seating for parents

*** Specialties ***
I specialize in Classical Vocal Technique. I feel very comfortable assigning repertoire of any difficulty and I am especially confident in my lyric diction knowledge of Italian, French, German, and English. I can teach audition preparation and audition technique, as well as acting and stage technique for singers.

Allison was able to identify my natural vocal range in the first lesson. Never thought that I would be comfortable singing in the soprano range, but she has given me week by week goals to build vocal technique and help me see my progress. She has an outgoing and enthusiastic personality! Lessons are a pleasure.
