Caroline Penwarden holds an MA in Music Composition from Mills College, a Certificate in Film Scoring from the Pacific Northwest Film Scoring Institute, and has been playing piano for over 30 years. She has trained in both Orff and the Suzuki teaching methods, and works with both children and adults in dance and music classes. She is a multi-instrumentalist, improviser and composer with a broad range of experience, and a special interest in film and dance scoring. Her work spans from pieces for jazz bands, rock bands and folk bands, to experimental vocal ensemble works, to pieces that combine music and movement, to chamber music, electronic music and sound-scapes. Her teaching style draws from this varied background and from training in classical piano, jazz, electronic music and African music. In working with students, she values a gentle and structured approach for developing good technique/tone and nurturing creative exploration/expression. http://carolinepenwarden.com/

My daughter has been taking lessons from Caroline for 8 years. Caroline uses a mix of teaching techniques and music to keep my daughter interested and learning. Caroline places emphasis on learning each piece thoroughly including proper dynamics and phrasing before moving to the next piece. I highly recommend Caroline as an instructor.

Caroline is a wonderful teacher for kids (my kids) and adults (me). While beginning with basics through the Suzuki method, she adapts her lessons to the interests of her students, and seeks to build a love of music rather than creating so much pressure to be a concert pianist that students rebel. An example of this is that the students don't have formal recitals, but "sharings" with other students or parents and students, in small groups of 4-7 or so. These are preceded by games where all present, including parents, participate in a fun game where we warm up our memories and senses of rhythm. Much less pressure than a traditional recital! Caroline is a very patient teacher and helps her students get through challenging pieces in a very encouraging way. She urges her students to practice regularly but understands that life sometimes gets in the way. She's taught my daughter some current pop songs and is helping me learn jazz songs, on the road to improvisation. I recommend Caroline very highly!

Excellence, patience, and sensitivity to each student's unique capabilities define Caroline's teaching style. Because of her ability to build rapport, she has become a trusted coach/muse/inspirer for our preteen daughter. Her respect for steadiness and her own creative musicianship infect her students. I cannot recommend her enough.
