Learn A&P from a biomedical scientist!

I spent over four years in a biomedical laboratory studying microbial and mammalian cell systems. However, over the last year, I have switched to teaching the science I love rather than researching it! I find that my time working as a laboratory manager and project scientist lends itself well to teaching not only theoretical concepts in anatomy and physiology, but their real-world or laboratory application. Anatomy in general is often called "memorization-heavy," but I find it to be rich with intuitions about life and what sorts of physiological adaptations help it find a way. While individual details are important, it is these intuitions that help house such details in our minds more permanently, recall them more readily, as well as direct our thinking when we are asked to make inferences, like on "critical thinking" test questions. This in mind, I teach both: conveying anatomical and physiological content in relation to overarching patterns/relationships in biology, such that the facts we learn during class-time act to enrich our overall understanding, rather than as a disparate points of information. I find that this intuition-focused teaching strategy is better for information retention and new learning (by providing a framework for unfamiliar information to be incorporated), and I am excited to share it with you!

Hi there! I am a biomedical scientist on a brief hiatus to spend some time connecting to my passion for teaching. I first began teaching in college as a high school math tutor and then again as project lead, teaching molecular biology and lab techniques to incoming undergraduates. More recently, however, I spent the last year as an online tutor, working with high school AP students, college students, and nursing students in a multitude of disciplines, including Spanish, high school-level math, chemistry, and most topics in biology (genetics, molecular biology, anatomy and physiology, neuroscience, cellular biology, and microbiology). Outside of class, I love to travel to natural destinations. I frequently spend time climbing, practicing yoga, and cooking for friends and family. I'm a huge people person and love meeting new people -- part of why tutoring is so rewarding to me. Looking forward to meeting you too!

    Experience

    Laboratory Manager and Project Scientist

    Nov, 2017 - Nov, 2021

    University of California Santa Barbara

As a "hybrid" laboratory manager and staff researcher, I had the unique responsibility of both conducting and analyzing my own experiments and maintaining the equipment, reagents, and staff necessary to support such experiments. These more technical duties include hiring and training new technical staff, which complemented my research into the pathogenic mechanisms of positive-stranded RNA viruses.

    Online tutor

    Jan, 2022 - Dec, 2022

    Wyzant

At Wyzant, I connected with a diversity of students: from high school, to university, to nursing students! I led last-minute exam reviews sessions, as well as regular weekly sessions to help students keep up with new course material.
