Principal Trumpet Southwest Michigan Symphony. Giving you the skills necessary to become your best!

When I won my orchestra audition I kept in mind these wise words: play the fundamentals extremely well. These are sound, rhythm, intonation, articulation, and musicality. I work on these every day then apply them to whatever I'm performing for that week. Each player is unique in their approach to the trumpet and I tailor each lesson to the individual. I use methods from Cichowicz, Arban, Clarke, Brandt, and Gekker among others. I like to get to know the player and we can set a plan to get their playing to the level they want!

    About Richard N.

I'm Principal Trumpet of the Southwest Michigan Symphony and a trumpet with the Kalamazoo Symphony Brass Quintet. I've also played with the Symphonies of Phoenix, Grand Rapids, Kalamazoo, Battle Creek, Jackson, West Michigan, along with many others. I've also had the pleasure to share the stage with Mannheim Steamroller, Celtic Woman, Marie Osmond, and Leela James. I also enjoy performing works for trumpet and organ, having performed multiple organ and trumpet recitals over the years. When I won my audition with Southwest, I kept in mind this simple principle...play the basics extremely well: Sound, intonation, rhythm, articulation, musicality. This is what I base my teaching style around. I've found one of the best ways to improve is moving slightly beyond your comfort and breaking things down to their elements. Just of few of the methods I use are Cichowicz, Stamp, Clark, Bousquet, Arban, Brandt, etc. Everyone has a different approach and I tailor each lesson to each individual student.
