Teaching since:
January 1985

With more than 30 years of teaching experience for the cello, I have taught students of all ages, throughout California and overseas. I earned a Bachelor's degree and a Master's degree in Cello Performance and am currently the Principal cellist for the Camellia Symphony, California. In addition, I am teaching all levels of cello and beginner violin lessons to my students in Folsom, Napa and Sacramento.

My professional performing experience began in Medellin, Colombia in 1985 with the Medellin Philharmonic Orchestra where I was their Soloist beginning in 1992 and later on, as First Cello, from 1998-2002.

While in Colombia, I also performed with the Antioquia Symphonic Orchestra and the Antioquia Chamber Orchestra from 1991-1999.

I left my hometown of Medellin to come to the United States where I performed with the Texas Christian University Orchestra in Fort Worth, Texas in 2000. Returning to Medellin, I spent the next year with the Eafit Symphonic Orchestra.

Finally, I settled in Sacramento in 2003, coming here to earn my Master's Degree in Cello Performance while performing throughout the next year with the California State University, Sacramento Symphony.

In Sacramento, I have also performed with the Sacramento Metropolitan Orchestra and with several other chamber groups.

At this time, I am teaching all levels of cello and beginner violin. My students range in age from six to seventy years and enjoy learning in a relaxing environment at their own pace.

I incorporate several different teaching styles to meet each students' individual needs and abilities.

Maria is an exceptional cello instructor. She is accomplished and highly skilled, though what sets her apart is her obvious love and enthusiasm for teaching. She is patient, discerning and observant, as well as friendly and approachable. She's been great in every way with our 10-year-old daughter.

As an adult beginner, Maria has been impeccable making me feel comfortable, encouraging me, challenging me, and teaching me. She is kind, professional, efficient, and very good at what she does. It is evident that she loves teaching as deeply and as truly as she loves the cello.

I took cello lessons from Maria for over five years. I found her to be very patient and encouraging. She has a passion for teaching and always made me feel uplifted after a lesson, eager to get back home to put into practice what she has taught. I am an adult student so perhaps a little more of a struggle than if I were much younger, but she never made me feel discouraged even on my worst days. She teaches from the heart and is an amazing cellist. I feel so fortunate to have been guided by her and will continue to play hopefully untill I can no longer hold the cello!

I learned more from Maria today than I had from my previous cello teacher in one year. Wonderful teacher and lesson!

Maria was my first private cello instructor and I studied with her for 2 years. She is an extremely kind and warm teacher who made every lesson very enjoyable and immensely educational. She was very open to my ideas as well as my wants and needs as far as playing repertoire and pacing. It is rare to be taught by a professional performer that is quite so active in the area they teach; Maria's experience performing professionally has obviously given her a perspective that is valuable to any of us who want to excel at an instrument. It is a joy to see her perform and learn from her that way as well. I and all of her students had the opportunity to get our own performing experience in her recitals, which were fun and important to my musical growth. I am grateful to have started my education in cello with Maria's instruction; I am much better off because of it.

Maria is a wonderful teacher. We feel lucky to have her. She is an accomplished musician herself as well as an understanding and intuitive teacher. She has been teaching my daughter for 3 years now, and the results are beautiful.

Maria has been my cello teacher for 6 years. She has made learning the cello so much fun and such a great part of me life. She is very positive and sweet even when I mess up and she helps me feel good about my mistakes. She looks at what I do well and gets me excited about working on the songs. She always helps me stay in perfect pitch and helps me prepare for when songs get harder, by making sure I have good tequnique. She always knows what to work on to make my lesson as successful as possible. After six years of playing with her I am playing this amazing and beautiful music. The Bach Cello concertos and the other songs I play make me feel so happy relaxed and filled with joy. She loves the cello and being a musician. And every time you go to her lesson, you just feel the love she has for the instrament and the music and how she wants to share that feeling with you and help you have the same feeling. Maria is the reason I can play so well and she is also the reason I have continued to play for so long and will continue to play for the rest of my life. I am so happy that I have the most amazing, loveing and fun teacher in the world. I think everyone thinking of playing an instrament should choose cello just so they can take lessons with Maria. My lesson is the highlight of my week.

Maria is a wonderful cello teacher! She teaches well to the individual, is very patient, and gives much encouragement. She always has an answer to my son's questions about cello or music in general. He says he knows she enjoys teaching because she is happy and full of energy at lessons. Lesson time is well-spent and my son always leaves lessons with a renewed desire to practice and improve.

Maria has been teaching my son for 5 years and keeps him progressing and motivated through the challenges of learning a highly articulated skill. A great mix of praise & discipline have made my son feel more confident about taking on a new challenge and while he may never be the next Yo-yo-ma he is learning a wonderful art talent that will make him a more well rounded young adult.

Maria was a great teacher, and is very knowledgeable about the cello. I wish that my work schedule had allowed me to keep taking classes, and I'll be back as soon as I have more time to myself again.
