GUITAR CURRICULUM (VOCAL INSTRUCTION CURRICULUM SEE BELOW):
You like music. I like music. You want to learn how to play guitar. I can teach you how to play guitar, and so much more. It's that simple. I have real-world experience in getting out there and playing guitar in a band, in front of a real crowd, and I can teach you how to do the same. Whether you're interested in performing in front of your relatives, at your local open mic down the street, or if you want to pursue music as a possible profession, you need strong, basic fundamentals to get there. That's where I come in.
*** Lesson Details ***
Lessons include: guitar technique/knowledge/maintenance:
-Getting to know your instrument, such as the name for parts of the guitar, and what they contribute to the instrument. How to identify notes on each string and in every fret across the fretboard. First, you need to learn how to speak guitar. This is like learning the basic language so we can communicate with each other.
You: "Why do I have to identify all the parts of the guitar?"
Me: "So when I tell you to strum over the sound hole, you won't mistake it for your ear."
-How to tune and care for your guitar such as changing strings
You: "Why do I need to learn how to tune my guitar and properly change my strings?"
Me: "So when you learn how to play the thing, it sounds good and stays in tune, and your neighbor's dog won't start howling when you pick up your instrument."
-Chords and Strumming: Open chords, Power chords, Barre chords, 7th chords, 9th chords, 1st and 2nd inversion chords. More chords than you can shake a stick at.
You: "Why do I need to learn chords?"
Me: "So you string chords together, and play a song, Silly."
-Scales (Major scales, Natural minor scales, Harmonic minor scales, Melodic minor scales, In every key and in six different positions)
You: "Why do I need to learn scales?"
Me: "Just to torture you. Just kidding! Scales build strength and speed and get your two hands working together. And scales are fundamental for learning licks and writing melodies later on down the road."
-Other fundamentals include chord chart reading, tablature reading, and specific technical skills such as hammer-ons and pull-offs, palm muting, using a pick, and finger picking styles.
Strictly for impressing your friends and/or classmates. Ok, not really. Music theory is important, especially if you want to play other instruments down the road, and to give you a the "Big Picture" of music.
Fundamental theory you will learn includes
-Basic music notation (The music alphabet, rhythm, the staff, ledger lines, time signatures, etc)
-Major and Minor Scales and Key Signatures (You've heard about the Circle of Fifths. Now you'll be able to decipher it!)
-How to identify and play intervals (Major, Minor, Perfect)
-Chord theory (What makes a Major chord, well, Major; Minor chord, Minor. Diminished, Augmented, etc)
You: "I've heard about this I IV V I progression stuff. What does that mean?"
Me: "In due time, Grasshopper"
-Transposition (Good for changing the keys of your favorite songs so you or your lead singer can sing them in his/her vocal range)
First we learn this stuff through take-home worksheets. Then, we apply what we know to the guitar and make it useful and practical.
Music history and appreciation. Ever wonder about the origins of the guitar and how it came about to be one of the most popular instruments played in modern time? Or who the great Blues guitarists were from the 30's and 40's and how they influenced later day Rockers such as Jimmy Page or Keith Richards? Or how about how modern Western music formed and is what it is today, starting with Ancient Greece, through the Middle Ages, to Beethoven, to Ragtime to popular music today? Yep, we got that covered. It's all about perspective.
Songwriting. So you're tired of playing other people's songs and it's time to get your thoughts on paper. Congratulations. You are officially an Artist as well as a Musician. I can teach you how to develop your lyrics and chord progressions into cohesive, tightly arranged songs sure to make your Mom or Girlfriend/Boyfriend proud. Songwriting expands the limits of learning, that simply copying another artist note-for-note cannot do. Tapping your "Creative Vein" is the ultimate path to learning music. Let's get started.

If you've grown tired of playing other people's music, then it’s time for you to get your songs on paper or recorded. I am an adult guitar student. Lena is a terrific teacher! She is organized and has a plan. She is very postive and encouraging. I am learning a lot from her and enjoying the process.
I couldn’t have asked for a better instructor for my daughter’s first guitar lesson experience. Lena’s lessons are focused in her student’s interests and level of experience. Would HIGHLY recommend Lena for anyone who is interested in leaning how to play a guitar.+ Read More
Lena is an absolutely fantastic teacher. She provides the encouragement needed for the beginner and the constructive feedback to take a person to new heights. I look forward to every lesson with her.
Lena is simply amazing. I learned more about music in the first half hour, than I have in the last 25 years. Patient, talented, humorous, very inviting. A perfect personality and skill for teaching. Looking forward to the next lesson.
Lena is amazing! Makes you feel at ease and establishes a process with goals in mind.
Lena is an excellent instructor. Lily feels very comfortable with her.
Lena is PHENOMENAL! I've been taking lessons with her for 1.5 years and still going! Though she has chapters of curriculum to follow, she tailors her curriculum for each student so that they learn at their own pace, and she doesn't always go in order by chapter either! She gives you what you need when you are ready for it.
Her experience as a teacher, guitarist, singer/songwriter, and performer all come into play during her lessons (at least, for me anyway!). As a new singer/songwriter myself, she not only teaches me guitar at a pace that matches my own, but also provides guidance on vocals, setlist creation, and live or studio performance tips. And she has a seasonal Live Showcase Performance at a local music venue for any of her students that are interested in gaining live performance experience.
Lena is honest and encouraging all at once... which is a hard balance to maintain. I highly respect her as a mentor and musician. If not for her, I never would have discovered my ability to become a singer/songwriter and release my first EP!
Bottom line: if you can get on her lesson roster... DON'T WAIT!
The best! Her curriculum and teaching style is excellent, and you can tell she tailors her lessons to the particular student. As someone starting acoustic guitar in their mid-twenties, I wasn't sure what to expect going into lessons at a late age. But Lena was open and welcoming! She is also patient and so encouraging! She always makes me feel like I'm making progress no matter how small the improvement is.+ Read More
We thought she was amazing; this was our first lesson but we expect great things.
Amy is enjoying the class and she wanted to continue.
My daughter enjoys the class. Lena uses the time really well for my daughter's advantage. She is knowledgeable and has good teaching techniques.
Knowledgeable, articulate, experienced, polite. AND she's actively involved in the music scene, so she's not one of THOSE "I took classes back in college" instructors.
As an adult and learning an instrument from a beginners level Lena provides great pace for acoustic guitar lesson. Enjoy her approach from theory to practical, she covers it all.
Lena is great! Wonderful with my daughter. We are so excited to work with Lena!
A wonderful first lesson. Lena makes the whole process enjoyable and comfortable. I highly recommend her as an instructor.
I think that if I had to pick someone to be my teacher it would be her she is a great teacher she doesn't pressure me and she sings beautiful and I have heard her sing she should be famous .
Lena is very organized and nice. Her knowledge of music is unassailable. I look forward to our guitar lessons.
She was an excellent instructor. I really liked her. Recommend!
Lena was super friendly. I was hesitant about taking voice lessons because I'm older and I have never had any training - she made me feel comfortable and confident. She taught me simple exercises and jumped right into the actual lesson!
Our singing lesson with Lena E has been a very good one! My daughter has really enjoyed the experience and Lena has built up her confidence to a whole new level. Thank you so much Lena for the inspirations and all your help.
I think my son likes he way of teaching. Lena is a good teacher. First teaching class was awesome.
I've had a great time learning with Lena. She's very nice and extremely patient. She mixes music theory with hands-on practice during each lesson. I was playing music (terribly) with her by the end of the first lesson. Every lesson I've walked away with enough information to keep me hungry to learn more.+ Read More
Lena is a wonderful teacher! she was very knowledgeable, kind, and a blast to work with. This was my very first Music Teacher and even though I only had several lessons it was worth every penny!
I was nervous about taking singing lessons and I've wanted to learn for so long, she's extreeeeeemely nice and very positive. Had 3 lessons so far and I learn something every time but most importantly, she makes you believe in yourself :D
I have only had Lena for 4 lessons and I can already see an improvement in my voice.. The exercises she gives actually improves your singing and helps you open up and sing high notes.. Lena is extremely nice and her lessons so far have always been fun..
Lena is an awesome guitar instructor. She’s extremely knowledgeable and talented. I like that she allows me to go at my pace and is patient with my learning. She does a great job mixing music reading, theory, and learning songs I want to learn. It’s also wonderful that she sings and she incorporates that into her teaching so I learn to play with a vocalist. I believe any student can progress with her approach and have a lot of fun learning too.+ Read More
We love how Lena teaches, she cares about each teaching and makes sure we understand the chords and what kind a of music we will playing. Lena is quickly to respond to any song request we may have even if she is not familiar with the song. Especially if it's in Spanish. She has been the best teacher ever. We have taken classes in her house which is good if you are starting. But now that we understand more of the chords and it's position we do online and it works well.+ Read More
