    About Kelsey S.

I recently graduated Cum Laude from Chapman University with a Bachelors of Music. While I was at Chapman I really grew as a musician and expanded my range of performance. I played principal in our orchestra for my time there, where I was able to perform works including Debussy’s Prélude à l'après-midi d'un faune and Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto No. 5. I also performed in chamber and new music ensembles, and played principal for Opera Chapman. In 2009 I was runner up in the Concerto Competition (with Dubois), and in 2012 I was honorable mention (with Liebermann). Lastly, I played a half-recital my junior year and a full recital my senior year. While doing performance, I was also able to pursue academic interests and develop myself more as a scholar. I had a minor in anthropology, and did extensive research on the San people in Botswana (for which we filmed a documentary), and on the music of Cuban Santeria. I have taken masterclasses and lessons with many prominent teachers including Robert Langevin, Denis Bluteau, Gergely Ittzes, Stephen Preston, Goran Marcusson and Jennifer Gunn. *** Lesson Details *** I think that every student learns differently and should be taught in a unique way! But...that doesn't mean I don't expect my students to practice or develop a strong foundation in technique. I help my students develop a practice routine of long tones and scales, and encourage them to pick out their own music to learn. Lessons cover reading music, rhythm, technique, music theory, phrasing, musicality, performing with others, etc. *** Travel Equipment *** I expect my students to have a stand, a tuner/metronome and a manuscript notebook. *** Specialties *** I've worked on all major genres in the flute repertoire and can teach from them all, from Baroque to Contemporary. While some flutists specialize in historic performance or modern music, I focus on being a well-rounded musician and play all types of western art music. I took private lessons in Alexander Technique for 4 years and often use it when I teach.
