Singing

Levels Taught:
Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced
Singing is an art, singing is a science, singing is work, singing is fun. Vocal/singing training is for anyone who wants to improve -- their tone, technique, musical interpretation, phrasing, vocal range -- all of the components that must come together to maximize any student's natural talent. I can teach any style for any musical goals. You will learn proper breathing and tone placement; you will work on appropriate repertoire and musical interpretation. I will teach you how to sing and how to maximize your strengths and minimize your weaknesses.

First of all, leave any fear or doubt at the door! We will work together to help you build and develop your voice for whatever your need. Whether you are a beginner just realizing you can sing, a high school student needing to prepare for your college auditions or a professional singer getting ready for an upcoming audition, I can get you where you need to be! My philosophy of voice instruction, developed over twenty-five years of teaching experience, personal vocal study and professional singing, focuses on three primary areas:
- Proper singing technique
- Key principles of voice training
- Breath development as a foundation for singing
- Care of the voice
- Varied and appropriate repertoire
In addition, voice training demands an exceptional ability to connect with the student on a personal level. Vocal instruction is a highly individualized art. The melding of both the technical and the personal aspects of singing is the dynamic that creates an effective and successful teaching/learning experience. Augmenting my teaching experience, I have been heavily involved in productions with children and young adults, using my musical knowledge, vocal expertise and skill in dance and choreography.

I have a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Vocal Performance from Carnegie Mellon University. I am a professional singer and actress and a member of Equity and SAG-AFTRA.

*** Lesson Details ***
I find that when a student arrives for their lesson, they usually are a bit tense, either because they were stuck in traffic, had a bad day at work, did poorly on a test at school, etc. So we always start with some stretches to loosen up and clear the mind. For voice students, we'll move on to technique building, working with breathing exercises, learning about good support and placement. Next, we'll continue the warm up with a series of varied exercises-think "Do-Re-Mi" from The Sound of Music-and then move on to songs. Your repertoire will be varied. You'll be singing classical music (really helps to build and strengthen the voice), music theater, pop, country and anything you may be interested in singing! That being said, since this is your lesson time, you may need to prepare for an audition, a solo at church or some other performance and may need to devote your entire lesson to that preparation. And that's fine with me. We need to be flexible to help you get the most from your time with me!

Whatever you are studying, always know that my primary goal is your growth as a musician and performer.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Open loft area with a black grand piano. Music. Cabinets. Seating for parents. Street parking available for those who are driving. 5 minute walk to subway. 1 small dog and one cat.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I can provide a digital recorder & cassette recorder. I find it is better for my students to have their own voice recorder but I can record for them.

*** Specialties ***
My experience as a performer has been varied, ranging from fronting a rock band in the 80's to cantoring for the Archdiocese of Philadelphia to music theater (I am a member of Equity & SAG) to jingle & commercial work. I specialize in music theater and classical but am very comfortable working with pop & rock.

Judy is great! Very flexible! She's a great listener, so it's easy to explain what I think my weaknesses are (she's also good at pointing out things I didn't know I have a problem with) and she knows so many exercises to address them. She's also very patient, kind and positive, so I never feel down or hopeless about what I'm trying to accomplish. Definitely the best teacher I've had so far!

I always leave singing lessons with Judy with a huge smile on my face and even more inspiration to sing and get better and better. She is so down to earth and fun as well, and I felt comfortable in the first lesson.
I was nervous that it would be difficult for me to take singing lesson being unable to read music, and not playing an instrument, but that was not the case. Judy's helping me get a feel for reading music and is really patient and encouraging. So much energy flowing during lesson time! I love it. Great instructor and person.

Where should I start...

Judy is so nice and sweet! The moment I walked in her place, I felt warm and welcomed. It is a perfect place to practice singing. Judy definitely knows her thing, and knows how to teach according to students' needs. She's inspiring, and always encourages me to do the best I can. In her classes, I feel I'm making progress every week. It's been a great learning experience! :D

Highly recommended.

Judy is not only an incredible teacher but a master herself in regards to her craft. I studied with her for eight years and it is her wonderful balance of knowledge, encouragement, personality, and technique that pushes her students to develop to the best of their ability. She is such a well rounded teacher who embraces her student's interests and still maintains a structured lesson plan in regards to musicianship and vocal technique. I can't recommend her enough!

Judy Tomsko is the best voice teacher I've ever had - I learned so much about my vocal potential and music theory with her. She is such a sweet and caring person, which made it an amazing environment to learn and grow. I can genuinely say that Judy taught me so much of what I know today about vocals and she is a great mentor and friend. I highly recommend that you take lessons with her!

An AMAZING teacher!

The trials and tribulations of finding a voice teacher in New York seem to be a huge problem amongst performers city-wide. However, when you find the perfect one you never want to let go. Judy is that perfect teacher. Her passion, dedication, and professionalism astounds me every time, not to mention the extensive knowledge she has about the business and the musical world. She simply is the best, and exceptionally inspiring!

AMAZING TEACHER!!!!

Judy is the best voice teacher I have ever had! I feel comfortable singing in front of her, which is HUGE for me because I need to feel like I can mess up and not be judged; she gives me a creative, supportive and fun work environment. When it comes to looking for audition material she is the best, I had no idea where to start but after the first lesson she had a handful of options for me. My confidence in my voice has grown from my time with her and instead of saying "I'm an actor who sings" I'm saying "I'm an actor and a singer."
I could keep going but I got a voice lessons to go to! ;)

A gain in confidence and happinesss

Having an opportunity to study voice with Judy Tomasko for over a year was both intrinsically and extrinsically rewarding. Judy has a warm and unique disposition which made me feel secure and confident with expressing myself vocally, for she created a safe environment, hence allowing d me to grow and become a better singer. She encouraged me to take risks vocally, and was eager to model and demonstrate for proper vocalization. Each lesson was prepared and organized to further personal development. I would highly recommend Judy for vocal instruction.
