Levels taught:
Beginner, Intermediate, AdvancedI have experience in jazz, classical, flamenco, funk, Cuban music, pop music, and all kinds of other styles of music. Let me know if you have a particular interest in any genre or even a specific artist you'd like to emulate.
Besides teaching instrument playing techniques, music theory, and improvisation, I also spend time in lessons helping students find their own best practice. I believe it is possible to help students find a level of flow that is unparalleled when they condition themselves to practice with deep presence and awareness of their own state.
It brings me great joy to facilitate the incredible feeling of exhilaration that accompanies improving one's music skills.
About J.Q. W.
I studied jazz trumpet performance at Oberlin Conservatory (Bachelors, '02) and The Juilliard School (Masters '17). I studied Mandarin Chinese at Oberlin College (Bachelors, '02). I lived and worked in Shanghai, China, from 2003 to 2010. I've been teaching music and language lessons for over 15 years and love to help people grow.
Whether you are starting from scratch or have some experience, I can help you get to the next level by giving you specific, methodical steps to work on and practice. I do my best to give students just the right amount of material to practice and study between each lesson, so that they stay motivated while feeling the right level of challenge and consistent improvement.

I have literally looked for years for the right trumpet teacher for my 12 year old son. JQ is a treasure. He challenges the student appropriately but is also gentle and understanding about the realities of life for a 12 year old in NYC. Cannot recommend him highly enough. Very skilled teacher, performer, and totally on point with showing up, planning ahead, etc.

Fantastic trumpet instructor. JQ is patient, receptive, encouraging—the list goes on. He's helped me go from literally not being able to make a decent note to playing a little shindig on New Year's for my family. Highly recommended. I'm still taking lessons!

I found that J.Q. was a quality tutor. He adapted to what I needed to focus on for Mandarin, which was tones, and as such I was able to improve my foundation. He also has a good knowledge of the language apart from just being fluent, and could answer any question I had. I definitely recommend him.
