- Levels Taught:
- Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced
This course is designed for students who want to study acting through the lens of the text. In my course for beginners and early level actors, we analyze the script for clues left by the writer and apply them to our performances. What is the difference between a beat and a pause? A pause and silence? How do we treat ellipses, commas, and periods? We also look at how the director might interpret and influence the performance as well as differences in performing for theatre versus film.
This class is geared toward the individual, and advanced students may elect to use our time to prepare a monologue for auditions or practice a scene for class in addition to the above lessons.
My lessons stem from the successful work done at my theatre company, which focuses on partnering with student actors to provide them with professional experience as well as exposing them to directing and acting techniques that may be different from what they previously encountered.
IMPORTANT NOTE: I accept my students regardless of gender, religion, sexuality, or race.

Ian is currently obtaining an MFA in screenwriting from UGA under the mentorship of Holly Sorensen ("Step Up: High Water") and Christine Swanson ("Chicago PD"), alongside classmates including John Strauss ("There's Something About Mary") and Neil Landau ("Don't Tell Mom the Babysitter's Dead").
Ian began writing plays in high school and carried his passion into college, where he directed his own adaptation of Neil Gaiman's novel "Stardust" for Starving Artist Productions. In 2015, he was a Young Playwrights Festival resident at Horizon Theatre and graduated from Emory University with honors in playwriting for his published thesis project, "Somewhere In Between."
Ian is currently the Managing Director of The Theatere, where his professional premiere was met with full houses. With the Theatere, he has also produced "What Comes to Light," a supernatural radio drama, and "A Monday Like Any Other in the Bermuda Triangle," a three-woman, environmentally-staged show.
His podcast "What Are Your Thoughts On..." is set to premiere in Spring 2019.

Omicron Delta Kappa was founded on Dec. 3, 1914 on the campus of Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Va. The Society was founded by a group of 15 students and faculty who believed that leadership at the collegiate level should be recognized and encouraged across all phases of campus life. This general principle—that scholarship alone couldn’t predict success, and that other intrinsic qualities had value too—became known as the OΔK Idea.Show More

it was fine. thx.
Best playwriting teacher!! So rare to find on here and more rare to find someone knowledgeable and easy to talk to.
I know nothing about acting! Ian was very kind and patient. I like to think I’m not quite so bad now! LOL
SO GOOD at going through basics and not being condescending. My school doesn’t have a screenwriting program beyond a general film class. I am so glad to have this experience. Thanks again!
Great man with great thoughts. My script is 100 times better for it. Do yourself and favor and sign up. I’ll be back for sure.
very friendly and patient with a newbie
Lifesaver for my business goals
Not too many writing instructors on here and glad with my choice. Ian started with basics and helped me figure out what types of writing interest me. Will definitely take lessons again.
I was worried about taking acting lessons online, but it was best for my schedule and WOW! Ian really made it work. He's a professional and funny young man and a pleasure to work with.
Knowledgeable and friendly. Would recommend.
Very friendly. Very trustworthy. 100% recommend for anyone with or without an acting background. He makes it all very approachable!
The dude knows his stuff! I'm a filmmaker but definitely more director than writer. Ian was very insightful and worked with my strengths to help me polish a script.
Great instructor. Very organized, very insightful. 9/10
I am a novelist and wanted to adapt my book to sell it as a film instead of just selling the rights and having someone else write the movie. With Ian's help, I was able to effectively target not only what parts needed to translated to film but also how to do so. A sharp young man and very patient with my struggles with technology!Show More
Ian has been A++ in helping me prepare for my acting final! We worked on motivations and playing to a theme and refining some of my blocking. Would def recommend!
very good teacher. would recommend.
AWESOME! I'm taking a beginner screenwriting course at my college but have only written two plays before and nothing for film. We went over the basics and did sort of a writing boot camp. Now we're workshopping my final project for the semester and I couldn't be happier! Good sense of humor and patient advisor.Show More
SO MUCH FUN! I'm an English major, but I've always wanted to try playwriting. We don't have any courses at my school, so I asked Ian to guide me through the process. It turned out great, and I used it as a final project in my fiction class.
Smart dude. Helped my son (high school senior) with his AP essays and noticeably boosted his grades. Thanks!
I've always been interested in creative writing. I'm used to fiction and poetry but had never tried playwriting. Ian did a great job of not only showing me the basics but also how to apply and adapt poetry and fiction into theatre. DEFINITELY recommend asking about adaptation if that interests you! Ian is funny and friendly and very insightful.Show More
Had an idea but I didnt know how to get it down on the page... Ian was very helpful in teaching structure and plot and how to find these points in my story. Would recommend!
very funny and relaxed dude. Ian put a lot of things into context for me, like explaining similarities between Shakespeare & Childish Gambino. who knew? lol
I worked w/ Ian before he joined this site but am happy to write a review. great for newbies or like college freshmen who need a confidence boost!
Ian has been consistent with his involvement in our company since the beginning, showcasing his writing, directing, and occasionally acting abilities. We feel confident that anyone involved with our productions will feel equally comfortable providing a glowing review of our AD!Show More
As an actress, I’ve always wanted to dabble in screenwriting, but never knew how to begin! Ian was so knowledgeable and encouraging. He helped me begin to really flesh out some ideas that had been bouncing around in my head for awhile. After working with him, I now have a solid understanding of creating natural and creative plot arcs, dynamic characters, and succinct scenes. Ian is wonderful and I highly recommend him to anyone interested in pursuing writing of any kind!Show More
I was very very new to acting, and Ian was more than patient with me. I had reservations about acting via webcam, but I never felt like my class suffered for it. By the way, I got an A- on my scene, so thanks for the help!
Ian was very helpful in working w/ me on my script. I had an idea of what I wanted, and we outlined and thought about the story and characters before I even started writing. Definitely in a better place with my script now! Only "complaint" is that sometimes one class a week isn't enough and I wish we had more time.Show More
Working with Ian taught me the ins and outs of a story and how characters interact in a realistic manner.
Ian has helped me with numerous creative writing projects for school and personal work. In my creative writing class he helped hone my ideas and give me more background on the structure of my short story. He also copy edited all of my papers and essays. Now that I am out of school he has helped me with a few small personal projects and also has done some copy editing for my website and creative blurbs. He is a great teacher/tutor.Show More
