With me students listen and practice their way to being complete musicians. They improvise from the start, quickly gaining confidence that music is their domain and that they can be creative in music, more than expert readers and interpreters. They practice because they want to improve something they've heard in their playing; to help them hear, I guide them in recording and reviewing their own playing.

This creative and self-directed approach, combined with a strong foundation I give in classical technique, can open infinite doors. My students have composed their own music, learned jazz, and explored Irish flute music and the Cuban charanga. Other students have explored Country, Rock, and even Dubstep (not my thing, but I like keeping an open mind).

I encourage lots of exploration and listening, both curated and free, which I then encourage students to share. My studio explores the length and breadth of the world's music, both ancient and modern, for inspiration -- far beyond the basic range of flute repertoire.

I also introduce students to the social world of the flute, including clubs and events, professional societies, online and local resources, and magazines.

About David M.

I've worked hard to be a flutist, and I continue to work hard every day to grow my technique, my hearing, and my musical imagination: what we call "chops" and "big ears"! My great hope is that I can help my students succeed at something they are passionate about within the musical domain.

Personally, I've recently been expanding my composing, improvising, and arranging activities. I am hoping to collaborate more on duets and small ensembles when this CoVid disaster is over!

I started teaching a free weekly course for the general public up here in Connecticut in 2020 because I feel strongly that everyone needs to know that they are musical inside, how to have access to that music, and how to share it with others. Of course my private students learn the same principles! "Big ears" for everyone!

I started my higher education in music with a BA in Music History and Theory, not Flute (that came later, with my Master's from Yale University in the studio of Ransom Wilson). My BA, from Oberlin College, gave me a great background to logically grow my students' listening skills. My students get to know the whole gamut of Western Music from Gregorian Chant to modern movie music. More importantly, they continually increase their understanding of what they are hearing -- both from without and from their own imagination.

I believe in breaking down walls that divide our world into isolated subjects, so I am interested in knowing what my students are excited about -- be it archery, French, Social Studies, Harry Potter, or whatnot -- and connecting it with music and the flute.

David helped my daughter leap from barely any knowledge or sound to sounding like she’d been training for years- in only a few sessions!
Our family was amazed at the immediate progress! David is patient and able to adjust concepts to the child’s level for easy absorption and application. I can say from first hand experience that school music lessons may be fine, but there is no comparison to the one-on-one attention of an expert flutist! Thank you David!
