I am a bassoonist, saxophonist and private music instructor in the New York City and Hudson Valley regions. My most recent degree was from Yale University where I earned by Master of Music from the Yale School of Music as a Bassoon Fellow. Previously I earned by Bachelor of Music from the Oberlin Conservatory. Currently I am a co-principal bassoonist of The Orchestra Now, a young professional orchestra headquartered at Bard College in Upstate New York. I began to teach at the Yale Music In Schools Initiative. I taught children in the New Haven Public School system for three years, privately instructing and coaching in larger groups. Ever since I have had my own private studio. I have helped my students achieve principal roles in All State ensembles in both Connecticut and New York. I am currently on faculty at the Community Music Space and at the Rhinebeck School of Music in the Hudson Valley. I teach both Bassoon and Saxophone of all types. As a freelance orchestral musician, I actively work in all around the Tri-State area. I've appeared in concert with the Albany Symphony Orchestra, the New Haven Chamber Orchestra, and have performed at such venues as Carnegie Hall, David Geffen Hall, Jazz at Lincoln Center and the Troy Music Hall. I've worked with important artists of our time including such names as Hanz Graf, Fabio Luisi, Joann Falletta, Neeme Jarvi and Gerard Schwarz. I have extensive audition experience winning and placing runner up to numerous positions in talented ensembles. In 2019 I was awarded a position with the Auckland Philharmonic Orchestra, an official runner up for the "President's Own" Marine Corps Band and a finalist candidate for the North Carolina Symphony. I am still an active audition taker, which keeps me in good form as an instructor.

He is a well trained musician with a lot of patience, which for our lessons went a long way. He is quick to help you find the right correction to technique, and will always cater to your personal needs. His lessons work well even online, as he is able to succinctly verbalize what and how something to be worked on. I highly recommend him as a teacher!

Carl Gardner is an A1 bassoonist. Over the past year and few months he’s improved everything about my playing, technically and musically, and helped me achieve goals I previously thought were impossible. His reeds are immaculate! 5/5 stars would recommend him to any bassoonist I meet.

Social distancing will not interfere with solo competition! Carl made certain that my daughter did not miss a lesson by proactively finding a way to have one online. Although she prefers to be taught in person, this has definitely allayed her fears of not having her solo polished and ready for competition!
