Singing lessons in Indianapolis, IN with a professional vocalist

I will start off class by doing vocal warm-ups with students and asking them about their practice that week and what they found easy or difficult about the vocal piece we are working on. I will tweak warm-ups to work on the areas they found difficult. We will then check in with our posture and do physical warm-ups to find any areas where we may be holding tension that could impact our vocal performance. We will talk about the proper way to breathe (lower belly) and to avoid constricting or straining our airways in sound productions. Then, I'll have them sing the song through once for me and I will give them notes on each section, demonstrating what they should do to improve that area. Comments can include things about rhythm, pitch, intonation, diction, breath support, delivery, vocal health, placement, and volume control. I will also work with the students to help them self-identify problems going forward by asking them what they did well and what they can improve upon so that they're able to self-regulate and fix some of their own problems between lessons.

    About Caitlin M.

I am passionate about teaching vocal music and stage performance. My first love was musical theatre performance and I branched out later in life to classical voice and jazz. I grew up as a theatre and show choir kid, studied music (classical voice) during my college years, and have over 20 years of experience including private lessons, show choir, musicals, and an a cappella group (where I often was a soloist!) I love performing both individually and as part of a group and especially loved being the lead jazz singer of Santa Clara Big Band in Santa Clara, CA, in 2017-2018. I love helping people to tell a story and engage an audience through their song. Whether you are preparing for an audition, an upcoming performance, or just want to learn more about the voice, I can help! I am currently earning my master’s degree in Speech Language Pathology due to my love of the voice and how it has the power to express both what we feel and who we are. I'm passionate about lifelong vocal health and incorporate healthful vocal techniques as a foundation in all of my lessons. It’s my goal to help students develop their unique voice through comprehensive warm-ups, challenging drills, and repertoire that both challenges them and allows them to build upon their existing strengths. My teaching experience includes teaching drama and after school choir through AmeriCorps City Year at a San Jose High School in 2016, teaching drama abroad in Bilbao, Spain, in 2018-2019, and teaching English online to Chinese students in 2020-2021. I started teaching voice lessons both in-person and virtually in 2021. Watching students progress and find joy in the process is exciting to me, and I enjoy creating reciprocal relationships that allow students to be themselves and feel comfortable in sharing their vocal and performance goals. Individualizing lessons to the needs of each student is the best part of teaching, and I'm always thinking about next steps and goals for each student.
