Bill is in his sixth season as Principal Trumpet with the Lyric Opera of Chicago and his third season as Assistant Principal Trumpet with the Grant Park Summer Music Festival Orchestra. He was a member of the trumpet faculty at DePaul University for five years and has presented performances and masterclasses at Northwestern, Roosevelt, and Northern Illinois Universities. Bill frequently performs as Principal Trumpet with the Chicago Philharmonic
Orchestra and has appeared with the Chicago Symphony and the Milwaukee Symphony. He has also performed works in numerous chamber ensembles in the Chicago area including Walton’s Fa- cade with the Dempster Street Pro-Musica Chamber Ensemble, Bach’s 2nd Brandenberg Concerto and Poulenc’s le Bal Masque for WFMT radio’s Summer Rush Hour concerts. In 2014 Bill was featured as guest soloist with the Sibiu Philharmonic in Sibiu Romania. More recently he performed as guest soloist at the National Brass Band Competition Gala Concert.
When Bill was my band director over a decade ago, he was the best music teacher I'd had at that point. After reconnecting with him and having him work with me on my techniques more recently as an adult player, that opinion still stands very strongly. He has a wonderful way of phrasing things that help you just "get it," and has expert advice from everything from fundamentals and helping you achieve your best sound, to more advanced techniques such as double and triple tonguing.+ Read More
Bill is a great pedagogue and a fabulous trumpet player! Thank you for the great information!
Mr. Denton was a fantastic teacher! We worked on articulations and phrasing in the first movement of the Halsey Stevens Sonata and he was able to bring a lot more out of me musically than I thought I was capable of. He made excellent use of the 30 minute online lesson and I came away feeling more confidant as I approach my recital.+ Read More
I studied with Bill in college and he is the best of the best. Highly recommend.
Bill Denton has a wealth of knowledge and a great personality. He knows exactly how hard to push you as a student and balances it with plenty of positive feedback. It would be wise for students to take this incredible opportunity to study with a principle trumpeter of a great orchestra.+ Read More

Great lesson teacher. Helped me with fundamentals such as range and sound! Also helped me with some expression with Charlier 2. I highly recommend
Bill is a phenomenal teacher. I’ve had lessons from him both in-person and online. He has a phenomenal ear and a knack for error detection to iron out creases in one’s playing. Plus, his patience and kindness are second to none.
Bill is very skilled in the art of trumpet playing, and it shows immediately in his playing and teaching. I’ve had two lessons with him already, and we got along great. Not only were we able to talk about bettering aspects of own playing, but we also touched on key areas my own students struggle with, and how to help them navigate those areas.+ Read More
I took a lesson with Mr. Denton a few weeks ago and he helped me so much with my audition preparation. In the two hour lesson, we went through about 15 different pieces of varying style, and he was great in getting me to think about the different types of articulation and sound colors I should be using for each specific passage.
If I wasn't getting the right style, he would play that same passage, and I immediately knew what needed to be fixed on my end. He sang through the trumpet and it was a privilege to get to hear him play up close.
I just took a lesson with Bill in preparation for an upcoming principal trumpet audition, and I can’t say enough great things about it! He has an uncompromising musical standard and incredible knowledge about the trumpet that really pushed me in my preparation. At the same time his supportive and kind approach helped me feel confident and empowered . It was very clear he sincerely wanted to help me play better! I am happy to give him my highest recommendation!+ Read More
Bill is a fantastic teacher, and has been extremely helpful in coaching me for orchestral auditions, and in working with me on solo repertoire. He has helped me improve my overall trumpet-playing, and is always coming up with new exercises ways to think about practicing technique, especially relating to sound concept and efficient playing. He has presented many different solutions and approaches to tackle any issues I've had with my playing depending on what I'm working on, ranging from articulation to expanding my high range, and everything in between. He sets a great example with his excellent playing as well, and it is useful to hear his musical ideas on the pieces and excerpts that we work on. I would highly recommend getting a lesson with Bill!+ Read More
Bill is a great player and instructor. I have worked with him on audition excerpts, preparing a recital program, and general trumpet technique, and found great benefit in his teaching regarding all of these matters. Go take a lesson with Bill!
