Hey! I’m Dr. Amy. If it has to do with music, I’ve probably done it, from performing flutist to band director to church musician to general music teacher to college music theory professor! I have a doctorate, two masters degrees, and a bachelors degree all in music. (You know how some people collect comic books or baseball cards? I collect credit hours.) In all seriousness, I have been playing flute for 39 years now, since I started in band in 6th grade, and I have been playing piano for about 42 years. While I consider myself primarily a Classical musician, I am definitely open-minded and very open to new experiences! I have been a church musician, playing piano in a wide variety of styles there for about 30 years, and I'm teaching myself beatboxing on flute! I love teaching music, whether it's piano or flute performance, or helping someone understand music theory and history a little better. I have been fortunate enough to receive some really great training in creative teaching techniques, which I then pass along to my students. I have taught general music to elementary students, band to junior high and high school students, music theory and history to college students, and choir to children and adults. I never get tired of teaching people the fundamental skills they need to make music with joy and enthusiasm. You can expect more from me than just to "learn piano" or "learn flute." You can expect to learn music theory and history, performance practice, literature, and the entire "culture" surrounding our art during our lessons. But more than that, you are a member of my musical family, and we make plenty of time to spend time together (such as we can during the pandemic) and be part of something bigger than ourselves. I will insist that you do your best and work hard, but we will discover the JOY of making music together. I can't wait to work with you!

Dr. Kennedy (Amy) was so phenomenal to work with. I felt so enriched by our conversations and one-on-one work. She encouraged me to dig deeper and push past the surface when analyzing works, an important skill I use every day as a theorist. I always left feeling like I had a good grasp on the content, but even more important I left feeling valued as an academic and human. Highly highly recommend her services!
