Robert B.

Newton Highlands, MA

About Robert

Robert B., classical guitarist, has been performing and teaching classical guitar since the 1990’s. He earned his teacher’s certificate and performer’s certificate at the “Conservatorium van Maastricht” (Netherlands) and came to Boston, to study with Eliot Fisk at New England Conservatory. Robert has also participated in many masterclasses given by internationally-renowned artists such as Pepe Romero, David Russell, Abel Carlevaro and Alexander Frauchi.

Robert performs regularly as a soloist or in collaboration with piano, violin, flute or voice in programs ranging from classical opera ari
as to contemporary compositions dedicated to his piano guitar duo.

As a teacher, Robert tailors his lessons according to each student’s ability and interests, helping them to reach their potential in a fun and relaxed learning environment. Through a process of exploration and discovery of their instrument, Robert stimulates students’ natural curiosity about the guitar where all challenges are an opportunity for learning. The more comfortable they feel with their instrument, the more likely they are to enjoy the practicing that will make them proficient on the guitar, or even a master!

Setting personal goals and determining how to get there provides a clear structure in your lessons and provide continuous guidance to your practice. As a teacher Robert helps you set and reach your goals by dividing the learning curve in small, manageable chunks. Like walking, you get there a step at the time with Robert there to help and support you all the way.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Since Robert will be visiting at your house, it is important to have a proper set up for your lesson. Two chairs, a foot stool, a music stand, set up in a room to work undisturbed. If you are using an electric guitar, make sure to also have an amplifier (I can bring one if needed) and a working cable! Oh, and have a notebook and something to write!

*** Travel Equipment ***
Footstool and music stand if needed, student needs to have instrument and two proper chairs

*** Specialties ***
I am prolific in any style and my specialization is classical guitar, methods are a mix from the 19th century masters (Carulli, Carcassi, Sor) and later masters (Pujol, Carlevaro) But also more contemporary insights from Shearer and specifically the Suzuki method for guitar.

Exceptionally thorough teacher

Robert is exceptionally thorough and starts from the fundamentals of classical guitar playing. I was an intermediate acoustic/electric guitar player but a beginner classical guitarist, so he started with correcting my right hand technique.

He is very light-hearted, funny and a cheerful teacher. Although classical guitar playing is intense, he allows me to learn at a comfortable pace and provides helpful resources (music sheets) to practice and improve.

I would highly recommend Robert if you are looking for a classical guitar teacher.

GO FOR IT and make an appointment right now!!!

I was one of Roberts first students in the 80´s. I stopped playing the guitar long time ago but I always think back to Roberts classes with a warm heart and a smile. These were good times! I learnt a lot and sure we had a lot of fun as well. It is great to see how Robert developed over the years. As a truly dedicated musician he is continuously refining his skills (while I thought he was exceptional already). Students from all levels and walk of life will benefit greatly from his allround knowledge and experience.

As an adult student who is very busy but still loves to play, I appreciate that Robert's wide repertoire and experience helps to make the best use of my time by targetting appropriate instructional pieces. He is a highly skilled, enthusiastic, and patient teacher.

Michael is an excellent teacher. For the first time in years, my 11 years old son is looking forward the his trombone lessons! Not only he's making lots of progress, he also loves the fact that Michael is always open to play the music that he likes and that they improvise a lot, which makes it so much more fun playing.
Michael is also very easy to get in touch with and very accommodating if a change in schedule is needed.
Super easy going, highly recommended.

My daughter is learning so much from Michael. She started out having no idea how to play any brass instrument. She's now been taking lessons with Michael for 4 months and is making great progress. He's a fantastic teacher and also very reliable and communicative around scheduling issues. Highly recommended.

My 14-year-old loves his lessons with Michael. Michael makes learning the trumpet fun because because they play the music my son is interested in learning. We no longer fight when it's time to practice.

I offer these observations on behalf of Ehud E. not as his student, but
rather as an appreciative listener--from a very unusual vantage point. I had
the great privilege of hearing one of the world's greatest bassists, Dave
Holland perform live with Miles Davis, as well as Chick Correa. Notably,
it is Holland with whom Ehud studied in a Master Class. I am doubly blessed
now to be able to continue hearing another of the world's greatest bassists,
Ehud E.--in various live performances.
It bears mentioning that having seen Ehud perform for audiences of
all ages, he has that rare ability to teach us as individuals not only to play our
instruments better, but to be better listeners, as well. He doesn't merely
'perform' for his audience members; he communicates with each of them
intimately, in his own, unique dialect of the universal language of music.
I can only imagine the joy of being his student--and the gift of being
able to witness one's own musicality come alive in the moment, while learning
at his side.

Jenae S.

Ashland, MA

About Jenae

I have had a regular studio of violin and piano students in the Boston area since 2006. I began teaching in 2001 in Seattle, WA. I perform regularly as a soloist, chamber musician and orchestral player at the Longy School of Music, in the Freisinger Chamber Orchestra, the Dorchester Symphony Orchestra and the Boston Civic Symphony Orchestra.

My primary focus in my teaching is to guide my students to becoming independent musicians, and to help them develop a thorough understanding of music. Lessons include learning about music theory, sight reading, performance skills and technique. I have
a thorough understanding of pedagogy and a true passion for teaching students of all ages.

Education:

I've received both my Master's of Music degree with Emphasis in String Pedagogy and Undergraduate Diploma in Violin Performance from the Longy School of Music, studying with professors Janet Packer and Mark Lakirovich, and have received my Bachelor’s Degree in Music from Emerson College.

Originally from Seattle, WA, I began studying the piano at the age of seven. Soon after, I began studying the violin, and performed regularly in recitals and competitions. I have won scholarships to attend the Longy School of Music for both programs and the Max Aronoff Viola Institute.

My hobbies include dancing Argentine tango and playing tango music, riding horses, sailing and yoga.

*** Lesson Details ***
Lessons with me are fun and creative, and we'll work on something new and exciting each week. Students bring their lesson books and notebooks to each lesson, and practice goals are written clearly in their notebooks at each lesson. I use a series of different books depending on the age and level of the student, with a combination of classical, popular, and folk melodies. In my lessons, I often play my violin with my students to demonstrate certain points, or play along for support so they can match the sound. I also accompany violin students on the piano, providing a strong musical support and an opportunity to learn how to play with a different instrument.

Usually, after a just a couple of weeks, students are already playing pieces they are familiar with. I encourage my students to practice every day, because consistency is very important when learning an instrument. Students will also learn how prepare for performances and have the opportunity to play in recitals each year.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Separate Music studio adjacent to house w/ piano and seating for parents

*** Travel Equipment ***
I provide an excellent quality keyboard, if necessary. Students should have a keyboard or piano at home to practice on, or a violin if they are taking violin lessons.

*** Specialties ***

Jenae is a great teacher!

My son just started violin lessons with Jenae and after barely a month is making great progress and staying motivated, even though he's starting this endeavor at almost 11 years old. Jenae's approach is very encouraging and methodical. We have been very pleased with our choice.

Strategies for Sight Singing
It may seem like instrumentalists have it much easier when it comes to sight reading music; by simply pressing a key or a string, the notes are immediately available to them without any additional thought, and all that’s left to them is to work out duration, dynamics, and tempo. Singers, on the other hand, don't have an instrument to rely on.
