As a person with years of experience working with children, I am patient and enthusiastic, and my main goal when teaching beginners is to inspire a continued interest in playing the piano. It is important for me to make the lessons fun, and therefore I am attentive to my students' needs, strengths, goals, and concerns. I incorporate ear-training into my lessons, emphasize the understanding of rhythm, and teach students to have a productive practicing ethic. I consider myself an encouraging person with a positive outlook, and feel that a child's self-confidence is an integral part of their learning.

For beginner students, I like to use method books and guide them through every step of the complicated process of learning how to read music. After several months, a beginner student will have learned how to count rhythm in a piece of music, identify notes in notation, play some basic scaled correctly, and would be working on a simple song or Classical piece.

I graduated from SUNY Purchase with a BA in Studio Composition in 2007, and from Hebrew College with a Masters' Degree in Jewish Education in June, 2016. I have been working in after-school, Hebrew school, camp, and other supplementary educational settings for the past ten years. Most of my students are learning piano, and I also have a few Hebrew students. My Hebrew students are either studying for their bnei mitzvah, maintaining their conversational Hebrew, or learning for the purpose of competence of services or Torah study. My piano students have ranged from age 4 to young children learning Classical pieces to teens learning to play the songs they like to adults working on their songwriting and improvisation. My strengths are improvisation, music theory and ear training, accompaniment of popular songs - rock, theater, pop, folk, etc.

My first lesson was everything I hoped for from start to finish. I haven't played piano for many years & wanted to begin by using a keyboard as a learning tool--to recapture dexterity and reading ability. I emerged with a better grasp of basics & even a little music theory--exactly as I had requested. Itai is a wonderfully patient teacher & I am looking forward to next week.

Ricky is an amazingly creative and inspiring teacher.

Ricky has been teaching my daughter for last 5 years. My daughter is now 15 years old. She already played piano for a couple of years before Ricky started working with her and at that time was getting disinterested. We were looking for someone who would bring that interest and spark back into her playing piano. I was looking for a special teacher who can teach basics of improvisation and accompaniment to a young child. After talking with several potential teachers, we decided to work with Ricky.

Ricky has proven to be an amazing teacher for my daughter. He is patient, creative and able to adjust to the child’s needs. I was amazed when couple of months after my daughter started working with him; she was already improvising and playing really cool pieces of music. That kind of teaching has inspired my daughter to continue playing piano for the last 5 years. She has accompanied two of her friends singing at her school talent shows and graduation ceremony with encouragement and inspiration Ricky has provided her all along.

Ricky frequently encourages my daughter to pick her own songs she would like to work on. Ricky has a strong knowledge of music theory and has incorporated that in his lessons. I love that my daughter is learning music theory, improvisation, accompaniment and reading music all with the same teacher. It is not easy to find a teacher who is so creative to include all of these in his teaching method. I would highly recommend Ricky as a piano teacher for any age.

I received a Bachelor's in Music Education and Performance from Drake University in Flute and Piano. Currently pursuing a Master's in Music Therapy.

At Drake, I received a musical scholarship covering 80% of my tuition costs.
I was also honored to sit as Principal Flute in both the Drake Symphony Orchestra and the Drake Wind Symphony, the top performing groups at the University.

My first piano lesson turned out to be so much more than I could have ever expected. My teacher, Kristin is so engaged in the lesson and so very well prepared. I'm an adult who had NO fun whatsoever to go to my piano classes due to the fact that Efren has a controlling style approach. All you have to do is listen to what he has to say, you can't get a word in and is condescending. I can't even imagine being a child and having to put up with his bullying.

All students are required to learn the basics in piano, such as,
the lines, spaces in both clefs, time signatures, note values.
Once the students have mastered the above, they can go on to learn
major and minor scales along with music pieces.
Students play songs that are in the John Thompson book and also
plays some supplementary songs.

I generally use the Schirmer and Thompson books for piano lessons. I don't consider myself strict but I do expect students to practice at least an hour a day.
3-6 months I do expect them to be able to start playing the piano and to know their notes and their locations.

I am one of those individuals for whom teaching is just something that I have to do. I started giving music lessons sometime in the 80's and have loved working with all levels of skill and experience. My students say that I am patient, adaptive and encouraging, committed to making music fun.

I have a Masters of Music from New England Conservatory in Jazz Piano and am comfortable and fluent in a number of musical styles, including pop, rock, gospel, traditional hymnody, jazz, and R&B. Although I love and study classical music, it is not something I teach at this point.

than 30 years, I am currently the Director of Worship for the chapel at Gordon College, a small Christian school north of Boston. I'm often involved in city-wide music events in Boston’s faith-based community and in demand as a featured musician for church services, parties, concerts and other events.

My priority as a teacher is to make the learning process fun, life-giving, and productive. I teach with patience and humor, at a challenging but not frustrating pace.

There are at least two ways that might set me apart from other teachers.

Firstly, I have honed and developed "people skills". I am an ordained minister and have held positions where I was formally and informally in a mentoring/pastoring role. I bring that sensitivity to my music lessons, understanding that personal and emotional issues can be triggered by the engagement with the music and skills being worked on.

Secondly, I've had a remarkable broad base of experience. My coursework has exposed me to a wide breadth of ideas and tools; my work life has been long and varied; I have had extensive experience in many different cultural contexts, both musically and otherwise; and I work well with many age groups and skill levels.

Regarding my teaching approach:
For beginners, I have a fairly consistent set of topics and skill sets to cover. Generally, in a few months, piano students (particularly those in middle school through adulthood) should know how to play major, minor and seventh chords, how to read simple chord charts and some very basic accompanying skills. Guitar students should know a dozen open chords and have been introduced to barre chords, and to have learned several styles of finger picking as well as strumming. Bass students should know how to find notes on the board and will have begun to learn how to fill out a song with an expressive but non-obtrusive bass line.

For intermediate students, the pace, direction and focus on lessons depends upon the goals and passions of the student along with the amount of time he or she has to practice. My goals for students at this level and beyond is to learn how to learn. I will use outstanding recorded examples of particular skills or stylistic idioms to help my students understand and master each new concept. I often will check in with my student to make sure that we are on track with what they are hoping for.

For advanced students, we will generally target very specific objectives. I also try to add elements of theory, history, culture, and even life lessons to apply to the topics we address. Because of my background in pastoral ministry, I can serve as a mentor addressing the emotional and relational issues of playing music as well as its technical aspects.

I enjoy working with most of my students, especially those who practice hard. I find all students unique and they response differently to my requests or questions. I feel that very often I need to react spontaneously to their responses. For the beginners I mainly focus on reading musical notes and learning correct rhythmic values. With beginners who haven’t played the piano at all I teach finger exercises written finger numbers only. Then I use Piano Adventures theory, lesson, technique and artistry, performance, and popular music books. Although Alfred’s and Bastien’s methods are well known, I prefer Piano Adventures because they introduce the coordination of right and left hand in more progressive manner. I was born and raised in S. Korea. I studied piano performance at Cleveland Institute of Music and University of Iowa and hold DMA in piano performance and pedagogy from University of Iowa. Other than music I hold BS in Computer Science from State University of New York, Albany. I began to play the piano when I was six and won prizes from the local competitions sponsored by Daegu Board of Education and Dague Division of Korean Musicians Association. I performed in major cities in Korea, the US and Europe such as Seoul, Paris, Vienna, Cleveland and Philadelphia. I participated in The Joanna Hodges International Piano Competition during my last year at University of Iowa and was mentioned by the judges as a technically very good pianist. Amber is a strict yet nice teacher. My two girls love learning from her and are excited about going to piano lessons with her. Although they have been learning piano for a few years already, they consider Amber well qualified to push them to professional level and say that Amber makes their music pieces much better and accurate.

My name is Michelle, and I'm an "older student" at the internationally renowned Berklee College of Music in Boston. For years I was a professional, full-time cellist and music teacher in Southern California.

I have had the opportunity to do so many cool things with music over the years! I get to travel to other states, play in beautiful places like Carnegie Hall, give lectures at music schools, play in music videos with famous rock bands, even record for video games like League of Legends, and cues in prime time television! Wow, how lucky am I? It all seems surreal. How did I get to do all of those cool things?

It's because I had so many awesome, loving, caring mentors who were there for me all of those times I got down on myself and felt like giving up. Those moments on the road to fulfillment ar
e huge stepping stones, moments I will never forget and always have to lean on when I am filled with doubt. The power of an encouraging word of a mentor is priceless, and I believe the blessings I have are a testament to the presence of compassionate mentors in my life.

I've been teaching music for almost ten years, reaching hundreds of brilliant kids since I started teaching. I've always tried to be for my students like those mentors who were there for me.

My teaching philosophy is centered around fostering a connection between music and happiness. The necessarily includes loads of encouragement, fun, the occasional happy dance, discovering musical intuition (basic improvisation and listening), a holistic knowledge of music (basic theory and history), anxiety management, and life-long lessons about the value of concentration and hard work. I believe in getting to know my students personally, and usually take some time out of every lesson to catch up on my students' lives. This may seem like a waste of time, but in fact is extremely important for the student to feel as though they belong in my studio and, in a broader sense, the world of music.

My 9-year-old son has been taking cello lessons from Michelle for the past 1.5 months or so. I find her to be an excellent teacher. Michelle shows a genuine interest in my son, asking him about how he's doing and has the excellent ability to break down complex musical concepts into small, teachable increments. Not all teachers can do this and Michelle does it very well! She is encouraging and never demeaning, but is careful to point out weaknesses and models how to improve. She keeps the lesson going and packs much into 30 minutes. Her rewards program for younger students is highly motivating for my son! I have a BA in Music myself, and would highly recommend Michelle!

Michelle is a great teacher. I just feel I can make progress and really can learn from her class. Even though it is just my second class with her, but i love to have her classes. I can feel that every class she has some plan and know what kind of information should be covered by the class. Even though I am adult beginner, she treats me seriously to really teach me something. And every small thing, she will explain to me and make sure i can understand. It is very important because even though i am an adult, i am still the beginner and know nothing about cello. i love her class a lot and think i can really keep learning with her. I come from family of musicians, and I have started exploring music since the age of 5. In addition to my classical studies in Russia, I won the only full tuition scholarship to study in famous Berklee College of Music in the competition that took place during Berklee Asia Scholarship Tour in 2010.

In Berklee I was deeply influenced and moved by Eastern European and Middle Eastern music, which lead to experimentations in fusing those genres with modal jazz and then later rock.

As an adult student transitioning to a new instrument, I can wholeheartedly endorse Inna as a fantastic teacher. She's patient, calm, knowledgeable and encouraging. Her lessons are fun with useful drills and advice to increase your skill but also spends time each lesson on pieces that are more fun to keep it interesting. I have performed all around the world and experienced many ways music can change lives. I have performed with orchestras, chamber groups, jazz ensembles, and directed my own groups for many years. I have 4 albums available at www.chasemorrin.com.

Although I am a professional performer, I truly care about about teaching and have extensive experience teaching piano and working with students of all ages.

My name is Chase Morrin, and I am a recent graduate of Berklee College of Music’s graduate program, where I studied piano performance and music pedagogy with Danilo Perez, Patricia Zarate, John Patitucci, and Terri Lyne Carrington. I also completed my undergrad at Harvard two years ago and finished a masters in composition at New England Conservatory last year. In the past couple years, I’ve traveled and worked in various music education programs in Panama, California, and Boston and have taught private students for numerous years.

I am always energetic and passionate with students - I know how life changing a good mentor can be. First and foremost, I care about motivating my students which means tailoring lessons to their interests and pushing them in the right directions so that they can observe tangible growth.
