Hello, I've been playing piano and keyboard instruments for 25 years, and teaching for 15. More then just a teacher, I like to instill a smart and patient approach to learning. Every student has different needs and desires, and it's important to have a flexible teacher with the experience required to motivate students and play to their strengths!

About Aaron
Berklee College of Music graduate, Aaron M., has been teaching students of all ages for over 15 years.
"I love watching young musicians grow into seasoned players and have had tremendous success with all my students. I believe that learning songs and playing music is a critical element in the learning process of becoming a good drummer/pianist, and musician. This is why I bring a powered PA speaker, mp3 player, and (sometimes) a guitar to my lessons for the student to play along with and learn familiar songs. Over the years I've learned to strike a balance between Reading/Rudiments and Playing/having fun, so as to maintain students interests and growth."

My boys, ages 7 & 5, started piano lessons with Aaron a year ago. He has taught them technique & theory all while using songs they boys love. There are days that the boys are not the most cooperative. Aaron is amazingly patient and persistent in getting the boys to do their lessons. I really appreciate and have learned from this patience when it comes to the nightly practicing. I am pleased that the boys have been working with a male teacher and I think it really helps them relate to the music and the lessons. If you are looking for a patient yet knowledgeable piano teacher, I would definitely recommend Aaron.

About Kristin
Hello!

I received a Bachelor's in Music Education and Performance from Drake University in Flute and Piano. Currently pursuing a Master's in Music Therapy.

At Drake, I received a musical scholarship covering 80% of my tuition costs.
I was also honored to sit as Principal Flute in both the Drake Symphony Orchestra and the Drake Wind Symphony, the top performing groups at the University.

I started to play the flute and piano in second grade, and
my love and passion for music have only grown and matured since then.

I enjoy sharing what I've learned, and learning from my students as well.

I am excited and thrilled by the opportunity to work with you!

About Bil
I am one of those individuals for whom teaching is just something that I have to do. I started giving music lessons sometime in the 80's and have loved working with all levels of skill and experience. My students say that I am patient, adaptive and encouraging, committed to making music fun.

I have a Masters of Music from New England Conservatory in Jazz Piano and am comfortable and fluent in a number of musical styles, including pop, rock, gospel, traditional hymnody, jazz, and R&B. Although I love and study classical music, it is not something I teach at this point.

In addition to private lessons and performing, I do music transcription, workshops, and all forms of vocal and instrumental arranging. Bil Mooney-McCoy is a life-long Boston resident who has been playing music all his life. Having served as a church musician for more
than 30 years, I am currently the Director of Worship for the chapel at Gordon College, a small Christian school north of Boston. I'm often involved in city-wide music events in Boston’s faith-based community and in demand as a featured musician for church services, parties, concerts and other events.

I hold a Masters of Music from New England Conservatory in Jazz Piano and am comfortable and fluent in a number of musical styles. In addition to private lessons and performing, I do music transcription, workshops, and all forms of vocal and instrumental arranging. My passions include morning coffee, finding new guitar chords, creating killer PowerPoint presentations, and trying to figure out how to use my smart phone.

*** Lesson Details ***
My priority as a teacher is to make the learning process fun, life-giving, and productive. I teach with patience and humor, at a challenging but not frustrating pace.

Some quotes from my students:
"I absolutely love learning from Bil! I've watched my playing and the playing of others at church vastly improve as a result of his training."

"[Bil] is filled with a large amount of knowledge, so while sitting under him you not only learn about how to play but you learn about music history and theory. Beyond being a good teacher he is genuine and friendly and cares about others."

"I have really enjoyed working with Bil. His patience and wealth of knowledge has helped me come out of my musical shell and has encouraged me to discover my musical voice."

"Bil makes learning theory fun! His deep understanding of music is complemented by his contagious enthusiasm."

"Bil has taken me to a different level. I went from tab and basic guitar chords, to building jazz chords and a far greater understanding of music theory."

There are at least two ways that might set me apart from other teachers.

Firstly, I have honed and developed "people skills". I am an ordained minister and have held positions where I was formally and informally in a mentoring/pastoring role. I bring that sensitivity to my music lessons, understanding that personal and emotional issues can be triggered by the engagement with the music and skills being worked on.

Secondly, I've had a remarkable broad base of experience. My coursework has exposed me to a wide breadth of ideas and tools; my work life has been long and varied; I have had extensive experience in many different cultural contexts, both musically and otherwise; and I work well with many age groups and skill levels.

Regarding my teaching approach:
For beginners, I have a fairly consistent set of topics and skill sets to cover. Generally, in a few months, piano students (particularly those in middle school through adulthood) should know how to play major, minor and seventh chords, how to read simple chord charts and some very basic accompanying skills. Guitar students should know a dozen open chords and have been introduced to barre chords, and to have learned several styles of finger picking as well as strumming. Bass students should know how to find notes on the board and will have begun to learn how to fill out a song with an expressive but non-obtrusive bass line.

For intermediate students, the pace, direction and focus on lessons depends upon the goals and passions of the student along with the amount of time he or she has to practice. My goals for students at this level and beyond is to learn how to learn. I will use outstanding recorded examples of particular skills or stylistic idioms to help my students understand and master each new concept. I often will check in with my student to make sure that we are on track with what they are hoping for.

For advanced students, we will generally target very specific objectives. I also try to add elements of theory, history, culture, and even life lessons to apply to the topics we address. Because of my background in pastoral ministry, I can serve as a mentor addressing the emotional and relational issues of playing music as well as its technical aspects.

*** Studio Equipment ***
upstairs music room: fender Rhodes piano, keyboards, amps, drum set, seating for parents

*** Travel Equipment ***
if for guitar or bass, that instrument; I expect piano students to have an available keyboard and for other students to have their own instrument(s).

*** Specialties ***

My teaching method focuses mainly on development of technique, interpretation and sound. I encourage my students to develop the ability to think and come up with their own musical ideas since I believe that spoon feeding everything hinders the growth of artistic sense. For more advanced students, I generally look at the music from their perspective and help them bring the most out of what they want their playing to represent.

About Nipun
I'm a student from India currently pursuing a Master's degree in Piano Performance at Longy School of Music of Bard College.
Although I've spent most of my time up until now studying music, I have also had the opportunity to teach students of different ages. If there's one thing that I've learnt from my experiences so far, it is that there's no definite maximum age to start learning piano at. The only requirements for one to be able to learn to play any instrument are patience and the will to learn and work hard.
I focus mainly on helping students develop a healthy, efficient technique and good interpretative skills.

Interested in composing and improvising music? Recent New England Conservatory graduate has a unique training in Composition, Jazz Piano, and Music Theory. This is coupled with real world professional experience including his time playing with main stage entertainment, accompanying broadway style singers, and performing nightly solo lounge piano throughout Alaska, Canada, and the Caribbean. His curriculum nurtures the dialectic between love, passion, and excitement being the forefront of musical studies, and a stern understanding of the practical necessities required if a student wishes to take the pursuit to a conservatory and/or professional level. This includes studies in technique relevant to their specific discipline, music theory, ear training, and most importantly listening assignments that broaden the student’s musical palate. All ages and levels welcome.

About Jeff
Boston-based composer and jazz pianist Jeffrey earned his Bachelor of Music degree from the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, where he studied with Frank Carlberg, Anthony Coleman, Kati Agocs, Bert van Herck, and John Malia. An experienced and devoted teacher of piano and composition, he has a particular interest in training students in the skills of improvisation, composition, and music theory.

At NEC, Jeff wrote a number of original compositions, all performed by the NEC Jazz Composers’ Workshop Orchestra under Jeff’s direction. After three years at NEC, he took a leave of absence in order to research different tuning systems and gain a better conceptual understanding of harmony. During this time, he worked as a showband pianist with Norwegian Cruise Lines and traveled throughout the East Caribbean, West Caribbean, the Ca
nadian Maritimes, and Alaska, playing jazz sets and accompanying cabaret singers and other guest entertainers on the mainstage. While aboard ship, Jeff devoted his free time to his own musical development and composition, culminating in the work All the Anthills, an etude for solo violin in 5-limit extended just intonation. (This piece was later premiered by violinist Isabella Costanza and was the subject of Jeff’s Capstone project for his Theory Minor at NEC.)

Jeff’s teaching career began coaching musical theater students at the Theater Arts Workshop in his native Westchester County, New York. While still in his early teens, Jeff maintained a busy performing schedule, participating in and having works performed by ensembles such as the Manhattan School of Music Precollege Jazz Big Band and Small Jazz Ensemble and the InterSchool Orchestras of New York Symphony. He was concurrently selected to conduct a six week internship directing the school bands in his own elementary and middle schools. During the summers, he worked as a counselor at summer music festivals such as the New York State Summer Music Festival and French Woods Festival of the Performing Arts. During his time at NEC, Jeff completed another semester-long teaching internship, which included mentoring a college student at Emmanuel College in music reading skills, piano, and music theory. Since his recent graduation from NEC in May 2018, he has kickstarted a private music teaching studio in a pursuit to give back to the musical community from which he has learned so much.

My lessons will be personally tailored to your abilities and desires. If you are looking to learn a certain type of music, I will work with you to learn the style, technique and feel of that style. It is important that you are enjoying the music you are learning. It is about you and what you love!

I am trained in Classical, Jazz, musical theatre, and pop as well. I also am a vocalist and am happy to work with you on playing and singing while accompanying yourself. I can also teach you to sight read!

About Anastasia
Hello! My name is Anastasia, and I love music, especially piano and voice! I've been playing since I was 3, when I first begged my mom to let me take lessons. Music has been a part of my life forever. I have a CT Music Education Certification and a Bachelor of Arts in Music from Connecticut College. There, I focused on piano, organ and harpsichord, performing my senior recital on all three instruments. I also performed in the Jazz Ensemble for all four years, while also music directing cabarets and music productions through the student run theatre group on campus, Wig and Candle. I also assistant music directed three out of four college musical productions.

In my spare time, I music direct musicals as often as I can, as well as playing pit piano in musicals in the area. I have worked with adults, professionals, and kids of all ages. I h
ave also enjoyed performing as a fifer in the Middlesex County Volunteers, traveling to Edinburgh Scotland this August to perform in the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo with the corps. I also am a composer, and actively play folk music with my fiancé. I believe that continuing one's own music education is very important, and learning new kinds of music regularly is crucial to every musician's development. My current project is being a part of the Celtic Music Ensemble at Club Passim in Harvard Sq, where my folk repertoire continues to develop. I have also attended Maine Fiddle Camp in the summer.

Since I was 18, I realized that my passion was teaching and working with kids. They are bright, interested and creative. I really enjoy seeing the process of a student's development over time, and love working with people to help them gain strength and confidence. Music is always interesting because you can always find new things to learn about; new songs, new pieces, new composers to listen to, new top hits to hear and love... it never gets old!

I can teach you how to read notes, to understand rhythms, to sight read (this means that you can sit down and read any music and play it almost perfectly on the first try!), how to accompany other musicians like vocalists or violinists, how to accompany yourself while you sing your favorite tunes, how to play jazz, folk, classical, or to help you find your style if you're not sure yet. I encourage you to ask me lots of questions!

I teach out of my cozy apartment in Arlington, and I really look forward to meeting you and helping you to become the musician you've always hoped to be.
