Find the voice of any drum and make it sing. Students of every level benefit from rhythmic breath and speaking the words of the rhythms. Beginners will find the sounds of the drum, learn the language used to explain patterns, and quickly memorize rhythms by name. Everybody learns differently, we will write, speak, feel, or clown around until you fully grasp the rhythm. Intermediate and advanced students will benefit from a variety of techniques from around the world to employ to make even familiar patterns sound fresh. Special attention is given to the trance rhythms of the world, from the Sahara and the rest of Africa, north across the sea, west across the ocean, and from the east.

About Peter

I am a student of various great drum teachers from many backgrounds. Experienced players enjoy jamming with me, but I have been told that I am especially gifted at helping beginners feel comfortable finding rhythms and sounds out of any instrument, including the human body. I have a personal approach to each student. I believe that everyone is different so the job of the instructor is to figure out what works for a particular student and how to present it best for faster, better understanding. I also believe that a good teacher is one that not only teaches the violin but plays it actively, professionally.

Experienced teacher and concert violinist, works with beginner to advanced students. Graduate of Manhattan School of Music & Yale University. I help students become their own best teachers, develop their ear and learn a natural technique to communicate the music most effectively. Technique is applied in the context of the music, and students will learn to develop and apply their musical instincts and gain an organic understanding of musical style, history, theory, and performance.

About Akiko

I am a professional classical violinist and chamber musician, and have been teaching both privately and at music schools. I have been performing for over 10 years in much of the Northeastern United States, and share my performing experience and enthusiasm for classical music with my students. I gra

Akiko taught me to play the viola when I was just getting started! She's so considerate with helping you get the fundamentals of not only technique, but also posture and how to stretch so that I wouldn't get sore. It's something that's stuck with me for years. I've never met another teacher who has helped me develop my musicality or talked with me about music theory as much as Akiko, and it's so important to know these things to play honestly and understand the music! Honestly you couldn't ask for a better teacher!! I'm so grateful to have learned my instrument with her. Thank you so much :)
Julie
I’ve been taking lessons with Akiko for the past two and a half years as an adult beginner. I’ve played other instruments all my life and have had many teachers, so I can say with great confidence that she is a uniquely talented teacher. Akiko is equally adept at diagnosing and addressing technique problems as she is at teaching musicality. She also knows when to redirect your attention from one to the other—and it is amazing to discover how looking at the big picture and being reminded to play the music can address a seemingly intractable technique problem. Akiko does not just teach you to play the violin. She teaches you to play music, which is probably the reason that you are playing the violin in the first place. I cannot emphasize the value of this enough. You don’t have to be a technical virtuoso before you begin to express yourself artistically. Akiko has so much to offer for advanced violinists as well. The way she brings music theory to life in whatever piece you’re working on will transform your interpretation of anything else you play. She gives you the tools to create your own organic interpretation in a way that also fits with the piece and its historical context. I find every lesson to be reinvigorating. When at times I have become stuck or frustrated, Akiko has always helped me to take a different tack and find freedom again. I feel grateful for the opportunity to work with her. She both an incredible teacher and a talented artist!

I took lessons from Akiko for over a year as a beginner-intermediate violin player. Under Akiko’s tutelage, I was able to play as lead violin in my school orchestra concerts and pass my violin exams. Akiko’s kind and encouraging personality strengthened my confidence in playing the violin. I’ve had experience with other teachers but Akiko helped me to really further my relationship with music. Her enthusiasm for music has definitely rubbed off on me and I couldn’t be more grateful for having Akiko as my teacher! I wholeheartedly recommend Akiko to anyone looking to pick up the violin, intermediate players, and those who are more advanced.

Music college graduate, with plenty of experience in real-world musical settings and five years of teaching experience. When it comes to teaching I have plenty of patience and no judgment! I like to think of learning piano like hiking an unpaved trail to a destination. At times the trail can become difficult and you might be tempted to give up on the destination. But as you gain momentum and your destination gets closer and closer, one realizes their past troubles were worth their current gains.
My goal is to help you define realistic goals and then, how to obtain them. If you are unsure of what your goals are, that's okay too. We can cover the basics and in time, find out what your musical interests are. However, I expect my students to work towards improving their skills by practicing a little each day, or as I like to say students need to be hitting the woodshed.
My lessons are tailored toward each student's goals but I always include certain topics. The core of my ...

I've been taking lessons from Andrew for almost 2 years now. He's a great teacher; he's patient, encouraging and accommodating. He builds a strong foundation for playing and understanding music by focusing on the fundamentals first and foremost. I highly recommend him as a teacher!

I came to Andrew as an intermediate-to-advanced level pianist looking to learn jazz piano. Andrew does a great job pacing his lessons to push new ideas and techniques without being overwhelming. He will also relate the techniques he teaches to how he plays in real life, which is extremely helpful. Andrew is very easy to get along with and is also very responsive between lessons. I'd recommend him for any skill level

3 Tips and Tricks to Learning Ukulele Chords

Having trouble learning chords on the ukulele? Here are some tips from ukulele teacher Willy M. that will help you master playing chords... Sometimes chords can be tricky to learn on any stringed instrument, and the ukulele is no exception. The good news is that with its nylon strings, a fewer number of strings, and a limited fret-board, learning ukulele chords is a little bit simpler than learning guitar chords. Nonetheless, there are still a few important things to keep in mind …
