Interested in playing the guitar? I've had over ten years of experience teaching the guitar, and even more time using the instrument in live performance. If you're a beginner, we can start from the ground up; we'll learn how to hold the guitar, how to tune, and how to strum your first chords. From there, we'll build the lessons around you-what you want to learn and the music you want to play! All music requires you to learn, but I believe your learning experience should be fun, so come into your first lesson thinking about the songs you want to play, because I'll have you strumming it in no time!

About Chris

A short history of my experience with music and education: The first instrument I learned to play was the guitar in 2001. I played the guitar on the worship team at FBC of Midway in Plant City, FL from 2001 to 2005. I began teaching private music lessons in 2003. I played bass guitar in

CHRIS was awesome!!! My first lesson was with a guitar that I’d had for years, he fixed the guitar so that I would have something to practice on, whilst he fixed the guitar he didn’t forget why he was there and went over notes and chords etc, After fixing my guitar we had time to go over the gchord and I pretty much had it as he was walking out the door. I’m very pleased!!!

Chris is a wonderful instructor. I took music recording lessons from him and it was very informative and relaxed.

I am a string specialist. That means I teach and play violin, viola, cello, double bass, guitar, bass guitar, mandolin, ukulele and piano. I earned B.A. earned from the University of Northern Colorado, Greeley Colorado where I was a double major in classical guitar and double bass. In my senior year I was the recipient of the Annual Concerto Contest where I performed the "Concerto in A Major" on double bass with the University orchestra for the spring concert. I have played in both professional and semi-professional orchestras in Colorado and Arizona. I believe that any student will practice more if he or she likes the music they are playing. Periodically I will ask a student to give me a name of a piece of music that they would like to learn how to play. I notate it for them, often simplifying the rhythm and chords in Finale NotePad and give it to them free of charge. I teach students how to play music on their given instrument. Not just how to play the instrument but working on ...

Mr. Victor is teaching both of my kids, one guitar and the other piano. They are beginners, and he is very patient but keeps a good pace. I feel like they are learning a lot. He is a true music teacher and knows his stuff!

It was awesome! Great pace and great mix of technical and practical.
Laura
Victor has been an amazing teacher. He is extremely knowledgeable not only about violin, but about practically every other stringed instrument there is. He also has an amazing grasp of musical theory, and has really helped me learn about my instrument. He has also helped me grow as a student. He keeps me interested in the music, and still challenges me to keep improving. I have had other music teachers, but he is definitely the best I've had.

I started teaching while in college - being able to share my passion for music is great! I graduated from Slippery Rock University in 2017 with my BA in Music Therapy. I am currently a board certified music therapist working in a local nursing home. My music therapy background allows me to approach lessons with a creative hands-on approach. I like to get beginners playing as soon as I can! I also include ear training and theory to round out lessons.

‚Äč I am a good teacher because I get it ... I remember what it was like to be learning piano. It's like it's own language! I am kind and patient and I want to develop a lifelong desire for music.
Also, I promise I will not poke your fingers with a pencil if you mess up fingerings.

About Amanda

I remember my very first piano lessons - taught by my mom because she wasn't convinced that piano was something I would stick with. I was so excited! Music was fun! Well not always fun ... the songs got harder and my fingers had to learn how to move in unnatural ways. Sometimes I would get frustrat

I want students to excel the fastest they can on guitar. Though I know it is important to let students learn at their own pace, I will never cease to challenge them through difficult pieces or exercises. I will develop plans and keep track of progress so that students and I can stay organized and ensure the learning is fluent. I will direct lessons based on what the student wants to learn most and what genres of music they are interested in. I also change the structure of lessons based on how the student learns. The basics I want students to learn from my lessons are basic chords, fretboard knowledge and music theory, finger-picking styles, pick and strumming techniques, left-hand techniques, and most importantly I want to teach students how to listen. I will train students ears through ear training exercises and songs. I firmly believe the better the student’s ears can get, the better the musician they can be. Besides just teaching songs, I want students to understand the theory, ...

We are so happy that we finally found a trained musician to teach my 13 yo son. Now my husband and I are taking lessons from William also. I feel that I finally have found the key to open up my music talent! Lol. William is very dedicated teacher and musician. He is skillful and he knows exactly what his students can do to make progress. Our time with him is very productive. My son and husband are taking lessons from William. I am so pleased that we have found a true musician., they seem to learn a lot in a few short lessons. My son starts to teach me guitar. His method makes the lesson easy for me to learn. His enthusiasm makes learning fun and 20 minutes lesson tolerable. I start to like my son more! William has changed my boy after only 2 lessons!

"Ryan is the third guitar teacher I have tried and in my opinion the best. While the others I tried were either too unstructured or too technical, Ryan does an excellent job of teaching you the all the basics while tying in the more technical theory aspects in a manner that is both efficient and logical. The way he is able to break things down has helped me progress much faster compared to my other guitar teachers. He is also well versed in adapting yours lessons to the style of music you want to learn how to play and can teach you all the different nuances that will help your playing stand out. I highly recommend giving Ryan a shot to help your reach your guitar playing goals."

"My dream instructor

When I first heard about Take Lessons and the ability to take guitar lessons over Skype, I was skeptical. Turns out it has been an amazing effective and convenient way for me to learn guitar. At one point I was a very active musician, mostly playing bass guitar, but I had not played a lot in the last 10 years. Eric has been able to expand my knowledge, my dexterity, and just my overall enjoyment of guitar in the few months I have been taking lessons with him. I was always a solid player, but Eric has been able to add a new layer of ability and really increase my skills. I recommend him to anyone who asks me about taking guitar lessons!!"

"My kids have been learning from Jesse for nearly two years now and we are so grateful to have found him. They had already taken a few years of ukulele, and so wanted to branch out to guitar. Now, they have started exploring several instruments (electric guitar, drum, keyboard, bass guitar/ukulele) and they look forward to their private lessons and band lesson every week. Jesse is a gem - he gives students a chance to direct their own interests in learning music (they suggest their own song choices to learn from), and encourages them to be responsible with the equipment and their practices. My kids really look up to him, and he is a fantastic role model - a great combination of skill, dedication, and teaching, but also really fun-loving. You can tell that he really loves what he does. He is also very professional and responsible, and an incredibly nice person. Highly recommended without reservation."

Guitar Lessons in Indianapolis

Taking guitar lessons in Indianapolis can be a very fun way to learn to play music and possibly earn money as a truly professional musician. Playing guitar also is a very cathartic experience that enables you to express your emotions through your playing while entertaining others or simply playing for yourself.

What to Buy Before Taking Guitar Lessons in Indianapolis

When you are learning to play guitar, you will need some basic equipment to make your experience more enjoyable. The first is a good guitar that will stay in tune. You should also buy a music stand and a guitar stand. The music stand will make it easier to read music while sitting or standing, and the guitar stand will limit the potential for mishaps.

An assortment of guitar picks is recommended, and you should have one or more packages of guitar strings on hand to replace the inevitable broken string. You also should buy some fret oil or conditioner to keep your guitar’s fingerboard moist and prevent potential cracking in dry weather. If you choose to learn on an electric guitar instead of an acoustic, you will need an amplifier. When first learning, it helps to buy a good solid state amp and later decide if you want to invest in a tube amp as your playing progresses and you consider performing live. With an electric guitar, you will want at least one good quality cable and might choose to buy effects pedals to hone your tone over time.

Guitar Stores in Indianapolis

There are many fine local guitar and music stores that can help you find anything you need for your guitar lessons in Indianapolis. Arthur’s Music Store on East Shelby Street is noted for having a great line of new and used acoustic and electric guitars and has been in business since 1952. IRC Music on East 82nd Street also offers new and used acoustic and electric guitars of many brands and styles, including the venerable Taylor acoustic guitars.

Another great place to look for your first guitar is SDC Guitars on West 96th Street. They specialize in stringed instruments and have a full line of acoustic and electric guitars available for you to try out before you decide on a purchase. Buying a guitar always works best when you can hold it in your hands and get a feel for the neck and playability.

Guitar Setup and Repair

No matter where you choose to buy your first guitar, or whether you buy new or used, it may eventually need maintenance to counteract any effects from seasonal weather changes and any normal wear and tear.

Indianapolis has a lot of great places where you can get your guitar setup, maintained, or repaired. SDC Guitars is noted for having excellent guitar techs and for getting guitars back to their owners in a reasonable amount of time. Arthur’s Music Store and Tom’s Guitar Repair on East Washington Street are some of the most-recommended repair shops in Indianapolis.

Local Venues and Events

Indianapolis has many great venues where you can see your favorite bands and check out new ones. The Jazz Kitchen is one of the preeminent jazz clubs in the United States, and the Klipsch Music Center, Slippery Noodle Inn, and The Vogue, rank among the Midwest’s best music venues and clubs. The annual Wes Fest features some of the nation’s best jazz guitarists paying tribute to the legendary Wes Montgomery and other jazz guitar greats. The annual Indiana Guitar Show offers a variety of guitar styles and performances.

The Surprising Benefit of Learning Guitar Without Sheet Music

We've talked about how to read chords and tabs before on the blog -- but what about a new approach of learning guitar without sheet music at all? Here, Austin, TX teacher Samuel B. explains his teaching technique...   During my college years, I was given a brief introduction to instructional methods common to Japan. Specifically, I was told that playing the shamisen or the koto (two native stringed instruments) is a skill learned by way of the student facing the teacher and playing w …
