Hey there – I am so glad that you want to study bass guitar! I would love to help you find and hone your unique personality as a bassist. Whether that is through developing good instincts for constructing parts and grooves, building healthy technique that works for your body and prevents injuries, or even working on your original music, I'm here to be your ally for all things bass. A little bit about me: I am a graduate of the world-renowned jazz program at the Jacobs School of Music and have been teaching for 8 years. I have experience with many styles and genres and have been fortunate to play with artists from over 20 countries. My work has been featured in NPR’s Jazz Critic’s Poll, Jazziz Magazine, and All About Jazz, and I was recently chosen to be a cultural ambassador for the U.S. State Department’s global music fellowship (OneBeat). In other words, we can work together on whatever music really lights you up, no matter the style! Hip-hop, metal, samba, punk...nothing is off the

Hannah has a rare ability to combine an incredible warmth with a wealth of exercises for improvement. The exercises were truly specifically directed toward the student. In my son’s case, he said this first lesson was also the first time he felt emotionally connected to the upright bass the same was he has in the past with piano and voice. He’s truly an emotionally connected person when it comes to music, yet he’s also a very quick thinker and Hannah could tell when he was able to hold multiple ideas at once. She also acknowledged his joy when it did come. There was a lot of technical knowledge he needed that were holes in instruction and Hannah sussed them out and somehow knew - even though the lesson was online - she knew his cues where it was time to move on or switch things up, or perhaps to add something. I cannot wait to hear the improved sound coming from my son’s right hand technique, now possessing depth and lovely tone that I knew he had in him, but knew also he needed the right instructor to draw out. We are so grateful Hannah is now in our lives in the role of a teacher and hopefully will become a mentor and another adult to look toward for balancing the discipline and enthusiasm music can bring to human beings.

At first I was skeptical about taking online lessons, but I love taking lessons with Hannah. I'm a classical bassist starting to learn jazz, and Hannah is providing exactly what I was hoping for in starting my jazz career. The first lesson we went over what my goals are, and she is providing me with exactly the tools that I need to progress. Every week she sends me a personalized document of what we went over in lessons, what I should focus on in the coming week, and music resources (exercises, jazz charts, etc) to utilize! She is patient, kind, knowledgeable in both technique and theory, and pushes me every lesson.

I’m not usually one to write reviews but Jeff is such a great teacher. He really helped to develop my playing to where now I consider myself a confident bassist. His style of teaching not only helped me to be a better bassist, but also helped me internalize musical concepts that will help me for the rest of my life. I strongly recommend Jeff if you are looking for someone to really take you to the next level!

I’m currently working on my masters in jazz studies at UTA and I’m privately studying with Brian Mulholland (played with Maynard Ferguson) and sometimes Eddie Gomez (Bill Evans bassist of 11 years). I also studied with Jerry Watts Jr (John Daversa big band and countless others) in Los Angeles, along with Andre Berry (played with Marcus Miller), Steve Billman, Joey Heredia, Ralph Humphrey, and many others.
I’m well versed in jazz, rock, funk, pop, metal, technique, sight-reading, music theory, and would be happy to teach whatever you’d like. If you want some general beginner lessons we can work on technique and theory and reading and incorporate music that you’re into. If you’re looking for something more advanced I can see where you’re at and recommend some good things to work on.
I’m really flexible and down to earth, fun and easy to get along with, and I’m very passionate about music and sharing that with other people.
I look forward to teaching you!

About Cody

I’m originally from Los Angeles where I studied at L.A. Academy of Music and played in many different bands all over Los Angeles. I got stuck in a good sales job that I really didn’t like so I decided to further my studies in music and am now working on my masters degree in jazz studies from UTA.

"Before I met Corey, I was a recovering drummer, transitioned to Bass. All self taught. Little did i know, I was a ROOT NOTE player just getting by. After Just over a year being taught by Corey, my skills have advanced so drastically. It's a great experiance being taught by the BEST. I now have bands calling me to sub or wanting me to join. If you're looking to advance your chops, or maybe you're a beginner, Corey is THE ONE for you.

"I took bass lessons with Jason during the summer. Jason provided a thorough assessment of my skills and challenged me to improve with each lesson. He was always well-prepared when the next lesson commenced. I could also always count on Jason to patiently answer any questions I had. He is also versatile in his teachings (knowledgeable about music theory, too) and will do his best to make certain your musical interests are addressed. Jason’s calm demeanor and patience were also appreciated.Jason did a great job of making certain I was satisfied with my lesson and what I was learning. Kudos to Jason for always giving his best when helping a student reach his/her music goals."

"I've been taking lessons with Kim, off and on as finances allowed, for 10+ years. Kim has a brilliant knack for being able to quickly assess what is needed to keep me moving forward in my study of music. We have primarily focused on bass with some guitar thrown in. That speaks to the flexibility and patience that this instructor possesses. She will keep lessons focused and moving forward, challenging me when it's called for, all in a gentle, affirming manner. I cannot speak highly enough about Kim's abilities both as a performing musician or as a music instructor. Nobody could go wrong with Kim as a teacher, she's been great!!"

"Greg has the ability to understand and know where any musician is at in their quest for knowledge about how to play their instruments with more confidence. He listens and is very intent on the students needs and not trying to overwhelm them with too much. Greg has helped me with a better understanding of how to play my bass better along with encouraging me to step out a little more to learn the whys and how comes we all wonder about music at times. He also enjoys learning from our own joirneys in music. I would recommend Greg to anyone, every time it is worth it. I have found new levels of playing the bass that i did not know that existed in me. He is just a great all around Christian man who loves to serve the Lord with those who God has put in his path."

Learn Bass Guitar: How to Play a Walking Bass Line in 3 Steps

Looking for a way to make your bass lines move? Bass guitar teacher Miller W. shares his three step plan to creating walking bass lines... The walking bass line is one of the most fundamental parts of American music. It is found most commonly in blues and jazz, but as you learn bass guitar, you will hear its influence in almost any style of music. A walking bass line provides a strong rhythmic and harmonic foundation by smoothly moving from each chord to the next using four quarter notes pe …
