Hey there – I am so glad that you want to study bass guitar! I would love to help you find and hone your unique personality as a bassist. Whether that is through developing good instincts for constructing parts and grooves, building healthy technique that works for your body and prevents injuries, or even working on your original music, I'm here to be your ally for all things bass. A little bit about me: I am a graduate of the world-renowned jazz program at the Jacobs School of Music and have been teaching for 8 years. I have experience with many styles and genres and have been fortunate to play with artists from over 20 countries. My work has been featured in NPR’s Jazz Critic’s Poll, Jazziz Magazine, and All About Jazz, and I was recently chosen to be a cultural ambassador for the U.S. State Department’s global music fellowship (OneBeat). In other words, we can work together on whatever music really lights you up, no matter the style! Hip-hop, metal, samba, punk...nothing is off the

About Hannah

I hold a degree in Jazz Studies from the Jacobs School of Music, where I focused especially on Afro-Cuban music, thanks to the tutelage of Latin Jazz giants Michael Spiro and Wayne Wallace! My jazz background also gave me rigorous training in music theory and history. My performance career is high

At first I was skeptical about taking online lessons, but I love taking lessons with Hannah. I'm a classical bassist starting to learn jazz, and Hannah is providing exactly what I was hoping for in starting my jazz career. The first lesson we went over what my goals are, and she is providing me with exactly the tools that I need to progress. Every week she sends me a personalized document of what we went over in lessons, what I should focus on in the coming week, and music resources (exercises, jazz charts, etc) to utilize! She is patient, kind, knowledgeable in both technique and theory, and pushes me every lesson.

I cannot believe how much I've learned in just 3 lessons with Hannah! She is an excellent teacher, patient, encouraging, and clear. She quickly assessed what I was looking for in upright bass lessons and the lessons are exactly what I was hoping for, and more. I'm so glad to have found Hannah.

The electric bass is the foundation of any band. But, it is in no way limited by this role. Just within the traditional role of a electric bass player, a world of nuance exists that adds character and interest to any group. Beyond that, innovative new approaches to playing have emerged and exciting new possibilities for the instrument have made becoming an electric bass player more enticing than ever. In lessons, I help the student to realize what it is to be a bass player, and how building on past masters and current innovators can be liberating and informing. I aim to help my students appreciate the joys of playing electric bass as well as ensure that they will be an asset to any group they decide to join.

About Eli

One of the great things about being a bassist is that you can play with a lot of different groups. From jazz combos and rock bands, to bluegrass bands and string quintets, the bass can be an integral part of each. For me, learning and playing many different types of music has added to the joy of be

If you are looking for an excellent bass teacher, look no further. You would be wasting your time. I've had a number of music instructors over the years, and I can easily say that Eli ranks at or near the top of that list.

Eli knew exactly where to start with me... he truly has an amazing ability to gauge where the student's level of knowledge is, and tailor the lesson exactly to that. Within a few lessons, I had improved my form tremendously. We covered everything that I wanted to learn, and wasted no time on things that I already knew.

What's more, a few of the instructors I have had in the past came off as a bit elitist and snobby. Eli is one of the most genuine guys around. He'll guide the lesson at your own pace, always willing to pause and show you something a second, third, or fourth time... At no point do you ever feel like you are going to ask a dumb question. This is a crucial trait of a good instructor, and Eli definitely has that going for him.

He is also quite accommodating. We typically do Skype lessons, but one there was one time that his room mate had made a slight miscalculation in the internet bill, which resulted in no internet that day. Rather than let that stop him, he actually brought his bass and amplifier on the bus, and came to my apartment to give me the lesson in person. He will make sure you get your lesson, one way or another.

My only regret is that I don't have a 6th star to give the guy! I definitely recommend him to anyone looking to learn how to play the bass guitar.

I haven't played the violin since I was in middle school, and I wanted to re-learn to play it. I am so glad I picked Dave, he is very professional and made me feel very comfortable. I jumped in with both feet and Dave made the instructions at our first lesson easy for me to understand. Excellent location and studio is awesome.

Excellent lesson. Does a wonderful job at taking older students and gently holding their feet to the fire to bring out the best- even under the most challenging of circumstances. Kudos to being such a uniquely great teacher!

I realize it was the first lesson but I was a little disappointed that we spend nearly the entire time on housekeeping items, like canceling and re-scheduling appointments. I think that could have been covered with an e-mail or handout. I also thought we spent too much time going over the differences between acoustic and electric guitars - considering my age and background. Would have liked to see him demonstrate what I was asked to practice before the next lesson instead of just being told to refer to the workbook.

I believe the role of a teacher is to provide a framework or organized system of progress for his/her student. A teacher is not simply someone who orders and dictates; but someone who can stimulate their student’s growth in whatever their field of study is. They help students to progress quickly by pointing out areas of weakness and what to focus on. I believe that learning is both an internal and communal process. Every living being has the potential to learn to do amazing things or acquire incredible skills. However, to learn something means to make it apart of oneself. The irony is that without having someone to play with and truly experience the music making process, the musician will never internalize what he or she is learning. I provide my students with a sense companionship as well as instruction throughout their learning endeavors. The direction of my teaching depends on the goals of the student. Music and art can be valuable to anyone interested in learning. My ...

"Very friendly, Got to know my son and what his interests were for playing Bass as well as what he already had learned. Asked the direction of his music and what he liked. Gave him some basic things to start the juices of music flowing. 2nd lesson was amazing because Kyle started applying what he taught my son as well as jamming with drum beats and guitar to give my son a real feel to playing and learning to apply what he was taught."

"I had a week in Vegas set aside for a trade show, and wanted to also use the time to hunker down in my hotel room and work on my bass playing. I wanted to locate a teacher during that time to help me accelerate my playing over what I'd been able to figure out on my own, and I was extremely fortunate to be able to work in several lessons with Nick.

Nick's a terrific guy who's not only tremendously knowledgeable, but incredibly flexible in his teaching style and very quickly got me where I wanted to go. Thanks again, and my strongest possible recommendation!"

Learn Bass Guitar: How to Play a Walking Bass Line in 3 Steps

Looking for a way to make your bass lines move? Bass guitar teacher Miller W. shares his three step plan to creating walking bass lines... The walking bass line is one of the most fundamental parts of American music. It is found most commonly in blues and jazz, but as you learn bass guitar, you will hear its influence in almost any style of music. A walking bass line provides a strong rhythmic and harmonic foundation by smoothly moving from each chord to the next using four quarter notes pe …
