Learning an instrument is no easy feat, but having the right plan, structure, and support makes all the difference. My teaching philosophy is designed to meet each student where they are, with a custom approach tailored to their individual needs.

I take time to get to know my students - how they practice, why they pursue their instrument, what their goals are, and who they really are as people. What is it that they truly need right now? Is it a practice schedule, or just some gentle encouragement? A new song to freshen things up, or a tough lesson about persistence? A conversation about homework, or a story to lighten the mood and bring some laughter into the music? As an experienced teacher, I know how big of a difference it makes to really understand the needs of a student.

I work with beginner, intermediate, and advanced students of all ages. I have experience with all major string curricula, as well as my own conservatory-trained approach. I have taught over 100 students in ...

Steven Hemmy is a lifelong musician who grew up listening to his father, a talented pianist and violinist, practicing almost daily. Not surprisingly, Steven asked at age six to formally study piano and, two years later, to study violin.

Having received a full music scholarship competing in a concerto competition on violin, Steven attended the University of Wisconsin (Madison). Feeling limited by the purely-classical university approach, however, he turned to the study of jazz and blues piano, songwriting, and improvisational techniques. After graduating, Steven lived and taught in Lampang, Thailand, for a year. While there he gave lessons on piano and violin to members of the Lampang community.

Moving back to Chicago after his year abroad, Steven now performs and records with his rock group, The Dirty Nines. He has been teaching in-home lessons in the area for 3 years. This amounts to over 20 years of playing and performing experience on piano and violin (with occasional vocal ...

When it comes to violin I use both book and audio. I want to help my students learn to not only read the music but to also hear and feel it. I have been teaching this way for the last few years and found that my students have a deeper understanding of the music by learning the see with their ears. Each student is tasked with coming up with goals that they want to reach, goals their parents would like for them to reach and from there a personalized path for learning is created and followed.

About April

I picked up music when I was very young and have never looked back. I started with the piano and then moved on to the violin, of which I competed regularly in up until high school. In high school I switched the viola and found it to me even more amazing. During high school I competed again in music

Learning a musical instrument should be fun, exciting, and most importantly pain-free.

About Chaul

I have been playing the violin for over 24 years. I like to teach beginning, intermediate, and advanced students regardless of their age. I would prefer beginners to take at least one year of piano lessons prior to learning how to the play the violin. This way students can transfer basic music know

Thank you Chaul for a great lesson and also for being so patient with me when my computer didn't log into the session right away. I enjoyed my first lesson and am excited to have such a fabulous teacher that sent me material and information to prepare for my first session. Born with perfect pitch, I started playing the violin and piano at the age of four. I am a classically trained violinist. Music is my biggest passion and I am currently auditioning for graduate programs. I did my undergraduate training from the Boston Conservatory and Berklee College of Music. I received scholarships from both institutions. I also hold a Bachelor of Science degree from University of California San Diego (UCSD). My past teachers include violinists from the Boston Symphony Orchestra and the concertmaster from Indianapolis Symphony.

I wholeheartedly understand that studying and understanding an instrument and its complexities is challenging, but it can also be incredibly rewarding and fun! It is a great way to express oneself and connect with others. I believe in incorporating music theory and ear training into learning the instrument, especially at a young age. I care deeply about each student's need and desire in terms of musical growth and promise to make the lessons

My daughter and I have been taking lessons from Kira for a little over a year, we couldn't be happier! We are learning by way of the Suzuki Method. My daughter was five when we started.
Kira is adept at explaining things in ways we can both understand. She is very intuitive and switches up the lessons to keep my daughter excited and engaged. We consider her a gem of a teacher, a rare find."
