When I first begin teaching a student, I tell them that everyone has the ability to sing well no matter his or her experience. I also tell them that there are four things that a good singer must have: breathe control (air is your fuel, and must be used efficiently and effectively to give you the best sound), posture (in order to have access to your air and prevent vocal damage you must practice good posture habits), diction (how you pronounce words when singing can impede or improve vocal tone, as well as help or hinder the audience in understanding the lyrics) and finally and most importantly, passion. Passion is how emotionally connected you are to music and is what really allows the singer to connect with his or her audience.

Despite the countless genres of music and singing styles that exist in musical literature today, very few things are as timeless as the Italian art song. What is an art song? As defined by the Cincinnati Song Initiative, an art song is a vocal music composition that is written for a solo voice and piano accompaniment. Art song is the g …
