Thanks for letting me provide a reference for Alex. I have taken alto sax lessons from him over the years, starting about 4-5 years ago. Alex is a great musician and teacher. Each lesson was consistently structured for: sound quality and listening, technical work and reading, duets, and improvisation. Rather than heavy music theory, he would instead provide routines to reinforce these concepts. He was always patient, and emphasized what I did well, with subtle redirection to correct problems. I definitely improved under his guidance and teaching.

The only reason I stopped seeing him was that my job became very demanding, and I could not devote enough time to practice and justify the time and cost of lessons. But even when I showed up unprepared, he was understanding and flexible to work with me.

If it would have been possible to have Alex come to me, I would have welcomed that.

I encourage all my students to enjoy exploring the sound of the saxophone and to find their voice on the instrument. Lessons include everything from reading and basic stylistic concepts, to improvisation, playing along with recordings of your favorite players, and transcription. I am a graduate of the University of North Texas Jazz Studies program and have over 15 years of teaching experience.

I am also very diligent in teaching sound production, embouchure, and tone. I specialize in prepping saxophonists for high school and college auditions. Many of my high school students have participated in San Diego Honor Band and San Diego Youth Symphony and received top honors. I also offer full-service recording services and can help guide you through the college audition process.

Mike has been working with my 12 year old son to improve his sax skills over the last 4 months. They have virtual lessons for 30-45 minutes once per week. I'm absolutely amazed by my son's progress and newfound excitement for playing the sax. Mike has done so much to help him improve his skills and confidence! My son says he feels like he's improved so much and learned some great techniques. He says Mike is patient and "really knows his stuff and taught me some cool jazz stuff too!" I would definitely recommend him! Thanks Mike!

"Playing the sax has been my life-long dream. I remember how once, while watching online tutorials on YouTube, I came across one from Nick, in which he was showing how to play scales – in a very simple way. My gut feeling told me to reach out and communicate exactly with him. He then responded, advised me what instrument to choose, and we started training, which I not in the least regret. I am having classes with Nick online, which may seem a bit more complicated than face-to-face. However, I’m satisfied with the results and, especially, with the teacher’s approach. I am keen on his punctuality, professionalism, advice and recommendations. What’s more, he’s always willing to respond and counsel even beyond the planned lesson. I call him ‘my saxophone guru’! I wish him creative wins and new accomplishments. An absolutely outstanding teacher, that’s who he is! I will be his student as long as time allows. And the wish is there always. Thank you, Nick!"

One example is that the saxophone is the only band instrument that uses a neck strap. Unfortunately, the neck strap is often the most overlooked aspect of playing the instrument. One of the first things that I stress to a new student is the importance of the neck str …
