I teach AP Chemistry like I play guitar. Music Theory can be pretty black and white, and by memorizing some shapes and patterns, you can learn to play something that has a certain mood, or that provides tension and release. Some of my favorite guitarists are Chon, Tosin Abasi (Animals As Leaders), Polyphia (Tim Henson), Sarah Longfield, JB Brubaker (August Burns Red), and John Mayer. I also like to dabble in trying to play some songs from old nintendo games I love, or take a song that sounds good on piano and arrange it for guitar.
Sometimes, the biggest problem with looking up tabs is the same notes can often be much closer together, so a song that looks really hard might not be that hard at all once you choose your own fretting-technique. Did you know you can play the same two notes from that power chord in like 4 different places on the fretboard, simultaneously? I'm big into that sort of knowledge to make my playing easier, and big into staying unoriginal in my own compositions.

About Corban

My job is to teach AP Chemistry and Chemistry, and while I love that job, guitar is more fun than chemistry, right? That said, I feel like with guitar, it's my job to get you where you want to be, and provide my own tips/insight/experience that I think can help get you there faster. I'm willing to

With Covid-19 creating more time on my hands than I knew what to do with, I figured it was time to get reacquainted with the guitar that has been sitting around in my apartment forever. I'd taken lessons years ago for a bit and dabbled in YouTube videos every once in awhile but nothing ever stuck, Corban has really changed this for me. The guy is a really patient instructor and funny too, genuinely made me want to keep learning and I feel like I'm finally starting to get somewhere with the guitar. Definitely recomend him, the best experience I've had with lessons hands down.

Learning to play guitar has been my dream forever. The lockdown has given me time to focus on this goal and take online lessons. I was lucky enough to find this instructor! I didn't expect the lessons would be so helpful and rich in content. Not only I've learned techniques, but I kept on being motivated. I can highly recommend this teacher. Professional, kind, and resourceful.

"At 39 I decided it was time to learn to play guitar, I had wanted to do it for years but just hadn't. So I bought an electric guitar and played around for a month or so before deciding lessons were in order.

I shopped around for someone cheap, don't do that, they are cheap for a reason. I eventually came across Phil and we hit it off well. He is very well versed in blues and rock music which I was looking for. He knows music theory and breaks it down well. He's a straight shooter and will call you out when you're lazy, but always gives kudos and encouragement when appropriate.

It's nice when your teacher has practical real world experience to back up the teaching. Phil can back up his teaching and truly loves entertaining people, he puts on a great live show.

I would certainly recommend Phil as a teacher as well as a musician. Phil is a "Rock Star"!

Years later I am still playing guitar and now bass with a band several times a week and having a blast.

Thanks Phil."

"Years ago I took Guitar Lessons at a local music store ( a very prominent one) as a raw beginner and quickly became frustrated with my lack of progress. Although my teacher was a great player and "very hot" to look at I soon began to feel like I was merely his "practice dummy."... I'd play the chords he showed me, endlessly,... while he seemed to be just practicing his solo playing. ... I then tried On-Line Lessons from various sites which were actually even less helpful and soon just lost interest completely.
A friend of mine said she had taken lessons from a Don DeBold for about 5 years before going off to college and highly recommended him.
I've now been taking lessons from Don for almost 2 years and having a blast ! I've learned how to play along with most of my favorite songs (mainly Blues and Rock) and now I'm learning to play Solo Guitar that needs no accompaniment !
Unlike my first teacher, during many lessons Don barely plays or even has his Strat on his lap because he's busy concentrating on what I'm doing !
He's a stickler yet lots of fun at the same time> I super recommend him as a Guitar and Music Teacher !!! Aneiah J."

How Much Time Should I Spend Practicing Guitar?

When you're beginning to learn guitar, you also have to learn how to practice. Follow this expert advice from guitar teacher Mike B. to find the proper amount of practice time you need to achieve your guitar goals...  As a guitar instructor, one of the most common questions I get asked is "how often should I practice?" Students are told various amounts of time that are deemed "proper" to practice each day. Some say a half hour, some say an hour, some say more, some say less. With all of thes …
