Working with Johnathan has been a joy.

It was my purpose setting out to study music in general, not just to study an instrument but to use the instrument as a means of approaching music in the abstract. I set out to study music’s mechanics and theoretical foundations.

Jonathan is very knowledgeable and very meticulous. He has a precise and analytical sort of mind, and very strong foundations in his classical training.

To have a wealth of knowledge in one's subject is not enough, one also has to know how to teach (which is a whole skillset of its own). It is clear Jonathan is an experienced teacher. I have never felt rushed with Jonathan, he is very generous with his time. He provides ample resources for study outside of our sessions, and is quick to respond to emails. He has lent me books, sent me links to videos, and provided me with plenty of homework.

Jonathan has also been very accommodating in allowing me to have some authority in planning lessons and exploring my own interests. Particularly I wanted to study modal music and found a folk song in the Locrian Mode. We took a break from the Suzuki work we had been doing and he helped me transcribe the song and practice.

I could not recommend Jonathan enough, I am switching focus from violin to piano for the time being and will be employing him as my piano tutor, and I’m very much considering taking spanish lessons under his tutelage as well.
Ian S.
Ian Really enjoyed his lesson. Jonathan is very knowledgeable and helped Ian with his basic skills and gave him great pointers. He also gave him an outline and daily practice requirements.
Jordan
Jordan really enjoyed his first lesson. Jonathan validated for him that the daily work he is putting in is helpful and gave him small steps to go forward with.

I started playing violin with the Suzuki method at age 5. I have been teaching violin to ages 4 to adult for over 8 years. As with all of my lessons, I provide a core curriculum as well as custom tailor to the student's needs and interest. I have learned more from Adam than I had from my two previous mandolin teachers. He is very knowledgeable and skilled in all of the instruments he teaches.

I play guitar in a local band and we decided we needed mandolin on this part, so I put an ad in Craigslist. Long story short the guy we hired to do the part turns out was a teacher. I always wanted to learn the fiddle so I thought a couple lessons would be enough, but this guy knows so much and so many styles that I'm hooked. I live in Greenfield, so most of my lessons are online

I asked at Downtown Sounds in Northampton who is the best fiddle teacher in western MA. Joe said "Adam Sweet". I called and he responded promptly. I must say, he's very patient and knowledgeable. I've been taking lessons now from Mr. Sweet since 2009 when he was teaching in South Hadley

An experienced and versatile musician with a passion for building technique and finding students' unique artistic voice.

Students of mine study standard concertos, Bach, Suzuki materials, and scales. They also work on fiddle and jazz tunes, improvisation, and pop songs. The most important thing is to find what lights a spark in each student!

About Zachary

I am a violinist and violist with experience performing and studying all over the world. I am a trained classical musician, but I also have a passion for improvisation, hip hop, pop, jazz, and fiddle music! My strengths lie in building students' technical foundation while helping them find their art

Zachary is astute, professional, clear in communication, and a compassionate and effective teacher. I have had violin, cello, and viola instructors for my children for 15 years, and Zachary is among the best. There are a few things you look for in an instructor:
1. That they make an honest assessment.
2. That they make a plan, communicate it to the student, and stick to it.
3. That they work with what the student brings to the lesson in terms of skill.

Zachary took my daughter in quickly, was able to assess where she was and put together an effective plan for her. I noticed the improvement immediately and my daughter was inspired to practice.

Highly recommended.
Greg
I decided that I wanted to learn how to play an instrument much later in life than most. On top of the late start, I knew little to nothing about music. All of these factors discouraged me for a long time and some teachers I've tried added to that anxiety. One day I came across Zachary's profile and decided to give it one more chance , little did I know it would be one of the single greatest decisions I've ever made for myself. Coming to the table with as little knowledge as I had, including not being a young kid, was not a problem at all for Zachary. He has an ease about him when he teaches and is always patient and kind. Never once did he talk down to me or make me feel like something was impossible.
If you have a chance to have him as your teacher, you will not regret it. Let him help you learn, improve, and bring out the very best in you like he did with me.
Maria J.
I love Zachary's teaching method. He is very friendly and easy to understand. He is very passionate about teaching and it shows. I have progressed a lot after only a few lessons, and I will continue to take lessons from him. I highly recommend him :)

Learning music should be fun! I like to include a balance of music theory, technical work, listening activities and "fun" songs in my lessons. Using the Suzuki method as the basis for my lessons, my students love learning interesting facts about the violin while also learning to play by ear so that they can learn to play that new song on the radio without having to buy sheet music.

"My daughter was very frustrated by her previous instructor in Suzuki Method, a lady who could barely play the instrument except by rote. Mr. Maloney came in and radically changed the situation. He reassured us, he encouraged us and he inspired us. In a short time, my daughter had recovered her passion for music and started to play with a lovely sound and more importantly, a real understanding of music as a form of expression. He is such a wonderful player and teaches with great enthusiasm and meaningful examples.

I am honoured to give Mr. Maloney my very highest recommendation."

Listening to her playing the violin to show how it should be done is a delight. We consider ourselves lucky to have such a great teacher."

"My son has been taking lessons from Connie and we love having her as his teacher! She helps him with his confidence playing solo and also working through school orchestra music... he’s now one of the more advanced in his group! Connie focuses on the details to set up a good foundation and has been great helping him with some bad habits he devolved years ago. She has lots of experience with every age group and teaches all the way through very advanced level. Thankful she came recommended to us!"

Tigran has been an excellent instructor to my 16 year old daughter. She started with him last year and has improved tremendously. He has been kind and professional even though the lessons are in my house and I have a 2 and 4 year old continually trying to interrupt.
