Guitar Is My Specialty.. Been Playing & Performing Guitar For close to 30 years now!

About Matthew
Hi.. My name is Matt. I'm a very energetic, friendly, understanding & passionate music coach who has worked with students & clientele throughout the US. Possessing more than 25 years of music training & music industry experience, I've been able to take people's Playing to amazing levels.

In my musical travels I've networked or shared the stage with many famous NW music legends:
1.) Roger Fisher- Heart-2013 Rock-n-Roll Hall of Fame Inductee
2.) Lynn Sorensen- Paul Rogers/Bad Co/KZOK's Spike & Impalers
3.) Donny Evola - Geoff Tate/Former Queensryche/Foghat
4.) Jeff Kathan- Paul Rogers/Bad Company/Montrose
5.) Doug Mcgrew- Geoff Tate/Former Queensryche Singer/Operation Mindcrime
6.) Update - For the last year I have been playing off and on with Rudy Parris from NBC TV's "The Voice". Season 3 - Team Blake. He is an incredible music
ian and I'm proud to call him and his manager my friends. His new album coming out is nothing short of amazing.

In fact everyone I've mentioned above are pro all the way and great guys as well. I"m honored to have played with them.

I challenge my students to view music more than just as a "skill", but also a tool to communicate effectively and to combat life's obstacles.

I have had many guitar teachers myself including one true Famous Rock Star legend here in Pacific NW. Congrats Rog. U Earned It, & inspire myself, & others everyday.

You got to know the rules 1st, before you can then break the rules. This is how you develop your own unique style. And it's what separates the Pro Players from the rest of the pack.

But even if you don't want to play professionally, maybe you just want to learn a few chords, licks, songs, for yourself, or to impress friends. That's okay too!

I welcome every level and style. I always learn something from my students.
That's what music is all about. Learning & trading tips and licks from other musicians.

Bottom Line Is... I can help you learn and progress on your instrument faster...

Let me be the Music Coach to get you there!

Matt provided an awesome learning experience through down to earth, easy to understand explanations. Trying to figure harmonica playing out on my own for 2 years, I had heard of some of the concepts he taught with the music theory, but when he explained it, it actually made sense. Before this lesson, I mostly played along with the lyrics of songs that I know. After going over and learning the song "low rider", which is a new song for me, I am encouraged to seek out songs that have harmonica parts. One of my original goals in taking lessons is to learn to be able to improvise and I was given the opportunity to play the harmonica while Matt played the guitar. The hour was packed with information and harping and I am looking forward to my next lesson. If you are looking for an awesome instructor, I highly recommend Matt.

The main thing that I like to remind students of, when they take lessons with me, is that music is FUN! A lot of hard work goes into it, but the end result is always rewarding! I am a pretty laid back teacher, yet I still work to inspire my students to try their hardest and to be the best that they can be at what they do. It is very important to me that my students get their musical wants AND needs fulfilled.

In my lessons we will work on a variety of topics, including:

-Gaining a feel and command for your own instrument.

-Finding your SOUND: Helping you to produce the right tones on your instrument.

-EXERCISES: Scales, Etudes, etc. to strengthen the muscles being utilized while playing, and also to build up muscle memory and accuracy.

-Music Theory and Ear-Training

-Building your repertoire, which is necessary for performance.

-Arranging and Communication with your accompanying musicians.

-Exercising variation and creativity through improvisation.

-How to ...

About Makala
I have loved music as long as I can remember. I know its cliche© to say so, but it's true! :)

For me, having parents of different ethnicity and siblings that were much older than me, I was heavily impacted by the wide variety of music to which my family members listened. The force of this crayon box of rhythms and sounds captivated and affected me so much that it is the key experience that I draw from in making my own music today.

I grew up in Fairbanks, Alaska (a small town in the center of the state) so my only option for entertainment and fun was getting involved in the arts! I started performing at a very young age as both a dancer and a musician. I studied classical ballet, modern dance, hip hop and street dance, and world dance traditions throughout my formative years, which helped me to gain rhythmical fluency. I started my
formal music training when I began to play the cello. From then on, I was hooked on the sound and I immersed myself in music as much as I could; performing, competing, working in as many musical groups and productions as possible (as both a vocalist and cellist), and even teaching.

I moved to Seattle in 2003 to study opera at Cornish College of the arts, only to later change my major to Jazz, and then again to Latin music studies. Since graduating from Cornish in 2007, with my Bachelor of Music degree, I have been actively and diligently working in the local music scene; performing and recording with artists and groups of many different styles. Everything from various Latin genres, to Rock, to R&B/Soul, to Hip Hop, and Jazz. Through my music, I aim to reach out to people of all cultures. I also aim to teach my own students with the hope that they too can discover the same continuous love of music that I have grown to feel (and still am growing to feel) over the years. :)

*** Studio Equipment ***
88 key piano, cello, various percussion instruments, guitars, ukulele, library, computer, lessons are given in a private studio.

*** Specialties ***
As far as voice goes, I teach all genres and styles but I personally specialize in the Latin genres. I teach all aspects of the music; rhythm, harmony, theory. I even teach performance; how to work with a band in real-time communication, song communication (or story telling as I like to call it), and developing ones own personal style. I believe that there is much more to singing than just vocal technique alone, so I believe in teaching musical fundamentals and functions so that my students will not only be considered vocalists, but competent musicians.

* William Leavitt's Berkley guitar study.
* Learn how to play scales in the first position on your guitar.
* Build rhythm studies and cadences.

About Melissa
I have a passionate love for music and I honor the process in how the student learns by individualizing their lessons. I teach an in-depth classical study of scales and chord changes to all of my students in order to build a strong musical foundation. My students learn to play classical, worship, pop, jazz and many other styles they are open to or suggest. I also instill, teach and offer a love for improvisation to any student open to exploring the freedom of playing outside the lines.

I enjoy sharing what I know with my fellow students. I have seen the impact music has on families; it unites them like a beautiful song. Some of my students take lessons along with their parents. This creates opportunities for duets and so much more. Many of my students compliment my patience and say they have learned so much in so little time.

Guitar is my main instrument, I have been studying music by way of the guitar for fourteen years. I am well versed in many different styles but make my living playing jazz funk, and musical theater.

About Ian
Ian has graduated with an associates of music, along with studying with a handful of Seattle's finest instructors for Jazz guitar. In addition to studying flamenco guitar in Barcelona with the world-renowned Pedro J. Gonzales, Ian is also is a practiced percussion and drums instructor, and trained vocalist. He regularly plays in clubs around Seattle, is frequently employed by local musical theater orchestras, and already teaches a vibrant studio in Northeast Seattle.

I have a six year background of teaching music, which overlaps with a six year background of working at and managing a K-5 after school/summer daycare, so I can especially excel at getting the best out of young students, but love to teach all ages.

*** Lesson Details ***
Depending on your age, experience and musical aspirations, lessons will be approached from va

I try to work music theory in to my lessons, and always assure that my young students have proper music reading skills. Ultimately my goal as a teacher is to have fun connecting and playing the music that my students are passionate about, while simultaneously attempting to introduce them to new concepts and music.

I've been a guitarist since I was eight, an arts tutor since I was 17, and now I'm a professional live musician for several artists signed/affiliated with major record labels. I also self-record my own pop music and gig around Seattle. I teach all ages and a variety of styles--classical, rock, pop, acoustic, bossa nova. I will help train your ear to tap into your body's natural musicality by using a variety of media and exercises. Being a good musician takes time and work, but art is an emotional expression--so we must have fun, no matter what!

About Jake
I'm a contracted studio and touring musician for a major Seattle record label (Barsuk) who has 8 years of experience tutoring the arts to all ages. I’ve played hundreds of shows, and my guitar and bass playing appears on a handful of albums. Since 2009, I've been a part-time K-12 arts tutor with a nonprofit called 826 National. I've taught lots of kids, big and small, the ropes of the fretboard, the chord books, and the fundamentals of rhythm, melody, and musical hearing. I studied theatre and classical guitar at Whitman College, so I can help you improve your technical playing and performative abilities too.

As of May 2017, I'm new to TakeLessons/charging money for teaching privately, so please know how much I appreciate your patronage and audience. I know the importance of a patient, encouraging, knowledgeable teacher when learning t
he arts, and I think I can help you find strength in self-musical expression. Every person is different and every student learns differently; I think the best tutors can be flexible to their students' needs and be able to provide alternative learning solutions when roadblocks appear. We will communicate well with each other about learning goals and tactics, and we will have a LOT of fun on the guitar together! By the end of 5 lessons, I'll help you be more confident and/or versed in your guitar playing, and we'll only have lots more to learn and explore!

I'm a versatile guitarist with 8 years of teaching experience ranging from the elderly to the very young and everything in between.

My philosophy is to inspire the student. Growing up, I quit various instruments because my teachers failed to give me the tools that I needed to go home and have fun practicing. Giving the student these tools, no matter their age or experience level is my number one goal.

About Benjamin
Hi!

My name is Ben, and I can't wait to start playing guitar with you. I have been playing since age 14, and am a recent college graduate. Most of professional experience is as a jazz guitarist, but I have spent a good part of my career playing rock, funk, blues, and folk. Whatever your style and experience is, I would love to work with you to make you a better guitarist and musician. My number one goal is to inspire the student by giving them tools to start having fun in the practice room as soon as possible.

For students who have played an instrument prior to our lessons, I try and shape a curriculum entirely based upon the specific goals of the student, and I rarely use text books although I use a lot of exercises and educational material when appropriate.  I feel learning to play and transcribe songs and solos to increase a students self reliance and confidence is my most important job.  Most students come to me looking for structure so I try and provide a clear path to their goals. For students with no prior music experience I use text books, and exercises to strengthen their technique, expose them to musical ideas, and give them a foundation for basic theory.  After that is accomplished I move into a curriculum that is more personal to their specific goals.

About Jared
I have been playing instruments and performing live since I was 11 years old. Initially trained in classical piano I added guitar to my musical palette at the age of 14. In college I spent time continuing my studies in both piano and guitar and received a bachelors of fine arts with a concentration in jazz guitar from Columbia College Chicago in 2004.

I have since moved to Seattle, WA and have become a regular fixture in the music community as a guitar and theory teacher, songwriter/guitarist of the pop rock bands Electric NoNo and Warren Dunes, and co founder and producer of the The Big Ass Boom Box Festival Seattle and the Seattle X Southwest showcase at SXSW Festival in Austin. I have released five studio albums that have received regional and national attention, toured regionally and nationally, and perform regularly at Seattle ma
instays including The Crocodile, The Sunset, Columbia City Theater, and many more. My band recently performed at The Upstream Music Festival in downtown Seattle in March 2017.

I consider myself a life long student of music and I pride myself on my dedication to a complete understanding of my instrument. I offer beginner - advanced lessons for guitar and songwriting, and beginner - intermediate lessons for ukulele. I also administer a variety of workshops throughout the year for guitar, songwriting, and music theory, as well as bi annual student recitals.

I have taken acoustic and electric guitar lessons with Jared for several years. Through my own experience and my observation of Jared with other students, I would describe Jared as patient, encouraging, courteous, and respectful. His knowledge and facility with guitar-playing styles and techniques is vast. His understanding of music theory is infectious. He will proceed at your pace, not his. He makes a genuine effort to help his students identify and achieve their goals--and he's genuinely happy when they do. In short, Jared is an exemplary teacher. Highly recommended!

I've had the pleasure of learning from a couple of good teachers in my time. These were instructors with a clear fervor for music and a deft hand at instruction. Then there's Jared. With a calm and joyful persistence, one that not only holds onto an organic passion for music but one that also understands the unique challenges of the pupil, he guides the student through inevitable missteps and atonal chaos with a firm grace. His warmth and humor, coupled with a serious depth of music knowledge, are a must for the aspiring musician or the hobbyist. Whether your aims include songwriting, composition, or just plucking away in the garage, Jared's bespoke formula works. And, it's a joy while one partakes.

A major priority of my guitar teaching is to have students making expressive music every time they touch the instrument.

I begin by working on tone production on the open strings of the guitar, so that students are able to produce a full, beautiful tone on the first day. From there, we study left- and right- hand techniques in the context of real pieces of music, giving students the chance to apply the mechanics of guitar playing to the expression of musical ideas. At the same time, I work with students through progressive studies and warm-up exercises that have built-in expressive goals, so that they can learn to rely on their own ears to further refine their playing.

As I believe that a good guitarist is, first and foremost, a strong musician, I fold a number of diverse activities into weekly lessons, developing skills in music theory, ear training, sight reading, composition, and improvisation, all of which reinforce the acquisition of strong technique.

About Jeff
I’m a composer and guitarist, with 20 years of experience playing and performing on classical and electric guitars. I’ve given solo and chamber performances across the United States, with recent Seattle performances including Astor Piazzola’s complete "Histoire du Tango", the world premiere of Brian Cobb’s "Campfire Songs," and the Seattle premiere of James Bonney’s electric guitar concerto "darkLIGHTness."

In 2010, I received a Bachelor of Arts degree in classical guitar performance and composition from Stanford University, where I performed solo recitals of Bach, Mozart, Turina, and Henze, collaborated with the Stanford New Ensemble on contemporary chamber pieces, and played lead guitar in the heavy metal band Full Metal Apocalypse.
I recently received a Doctorate in music composition from the University of Washington in Seattle, wher
e I’ve taught music theory, composition, and musicianship at the college level for seven years, and where I continue to perform with the UW Modern Ensemble, Inverted Space Ensemble, and Seattle Modern Orchestra.

A major priority of my guitar teaching is to have students making expressive, compelling music every time they touch the instrument. And as I believe that a good guitarist is, first and foremost, a strong musician, I fold a number of diverse activities into weekly lessons, developing skills in music theory, fretboard knowledge, ear training, sight reading, composition, and improvisation, all of which reinforce the acquisition of strong technique.

I teach a wide array of styles—including classical, folk, rock, flamenco, and heavy metal—and I look forward to helping you realize your musical goals!
