Welcome to my violin and viola studio! I believe that every student can enjoy the process of studying an instrument, and can learn to play with ease and joy. As a result, I work to determine each student's learning style, look for ways to encourage individual ownership of learning, and adapt my approach to help meet each student’s needs and goals. I teach both Suzuki and traditional lessons, and draw from a variety of musical styles and approaches to help students develop a broad range of skills that include a strong technical foundation, ear training, sight-reading, ensemble playing, and musical self-expression. Through this approach, I hope to help students develop a lifelong love for music that will serve them in all future endeavors, musical or otherwise.

Young multilingual (English, Cantonese, and Mandarin) piano and violin teacher who combines the formal traditional Eastern style of teaching, and the fun approach of Western style of teaching into his music lessons.

Fun lessons but also challenging
- I believes that fun lessons are easy to gain young student interest, but it often lack to give them motivation. In the lessons, I often challenge my students, let them be self-motivated and become a better musician.

Techniques
- I focus my lessons on teaching proper techniques with their instruments. With my experiences in taking lessons from American, Chinese, and Russian teachers, I learnt a great spectrum of techniques and like to teach what I had learn.

Learning pieces and other related topics
- Playing pieces and songs is only a small piece of playing an instrument. In lessons, I also teach proper music theory, and ear-training.

I have students from age 4 to retirement age. Early beginner to preparing for college ...

I have experience teaching a wide range of students from young to adult beginners, as well as advanced students preparing for music programs at the college level. I will tailor the lesson to fit each student's level and goals. I am classically trained with Masters of Music in violin performance from Rice University (2013) and Bachelors in Music in violin performance from Florida State University (2011), however, if your interest lies outside classical music, we can work on other genres of music as well! I am currently Assistant Concertmaster of Houston Ballet Orchestra since 2014, and perform frequently with Houston Grand Opera and work as a substitute musician for Houston Symphony. I have over 10 years teaching experience of private lessons in both violin and viola. I have also worked as a chamber coach and sectional coach for Houston Youth Symphony for the past 5 years. I wish I could say many things but one thing I would love to share is that Ms. Rachel is the beat teacher anyone could ask for she really shows she cares, tells you your mistake, and Ms. Rachel helps even when it’s already good she tries to make it great not just good!!
Charlotte
I have been taking lessons from Rachel for almost two years. She usually teaches me in her home but we now do online lessons. Rachel helps me with my middle school orchestra pieces and we also follow the Suzuki series and music theory. She is patient and understands how to help me become a better violin player.

She likes to focus on the positive and is never negative. She’s always supportive and always takes time away to help me no matter what.

Luther stays where I’m at and then helps me go the next step. That is useful for consistent gradual progress without the frustrations of moving either too slow or too fast (I am a beginning tenor saxophone player). Nice interpersonal style, patient and easy going, while methodical.
Geoff K.
I think Luther is great. He works with my 10-year old son on piano, singing and even trumpet and violin as needed. My son has to work hard to progress, and Luther customizes the lesson plan for him and seems to understand him well. I'm really excited about them working together.

"Mr. Mark is an amazing teacher who is very accommodating and so relaxed when he teaches that won't make a student be intimidated at all. I can see that my daughter is very comfortable with him during the lessons especially with sharing some ideas and thoughts for her improvement in playing her violin. After just a few sessions, my daughter already told me that she became more confident in playing with the orchestra in school. She said that Mr. Mark knows what he is talking about. 😊👍"

She is extremely encouraging. My son is on the shy side, so when I saw him take the stage to play a solo at the end of the school year, it was awesome. She is a wonderful teacher!"

Introduction to Reading Violin Tabs

Tablature is a form of musical notation that was invented to make reading music easier for fretted and string instruments like guitar, bass, and violin. The premise is operationally-based, meaning that rather than showing rhythm, duration, and pitch, violin tabs will show the player where and when to place their fingers on the instrument. For an improvising musician, violin tabs allow you to improvise while staying within the chord structure of a song. Tablature-style notation is most commonly …
