David Smith is a fantastic teacher, musician and communicator. He understands how to diagnose what issues a student is facing on the horn. He played a very big role in the preparation I did for my senior recital when I was an undergraduate trumpet student, and he was very encouraging throughout the whole process. If you take lessons with him, you are going to get a step by step plan that will help you reach your goals.

I equally cover fundamentals, technique, tone production, classical, jazz and anything else the student might be interested in.

About Nathan
I have been teaching private lessons for close to 10 years and have been an active performer for even longer, playing in all different types of groups, from rock bands and jazz groups to orchestras and brass bands. I studied music at Frostburg State University (Bachelors) and the Peabody Conservatory (Masters). I can teach just about any age and skill level and cover anything you are interested in learning; whether its a certain style, genre, technique or song.

My lessons are laid back, with a focus on perfecting the basics. Most students work out of a method book appropriate to their skill level. Aside from that we'll also spend time learning songs and pieces of the students choice. With the right amount of effort, you'll know your way around your instrument in no time at all

*** Travel Equipment ***
Will provide sheet music and exercises. My students should have a working instrument as well as any method book or sheet music we are working on.

I aim to instill a love of music and of the instrument through both student guided song selections from popular genres and movie/video game soundtracks, as well as technical and music reading exercises designed to make my students well rounded and ready for any way they choose to pursue music.

About Nicholas
Detroit native, Nicholas C. K., demonstrated an innate musical talent from a young age. His command of piano, guitar, trumpet and bass progressed to studies at both Columbia University in Chicago and Wayne State University in Detroit. Since age 16 Nic has toured the country sharing the stage with acclaimed rock acts such as; Tesla, Bret Michaels, 3 Doors Down and many others. He is currently endorsed by Warwick Basses.

Nicholas been a musician in some form or another for as long as he can remember. His musical journey started when he was only six, with a delve into the realm of classical piano. While there he studied under world class child prodigy Josh Cullen. The composers that he studied include Bach, Beethoven, Barton, Hayden and many others.

From here he progressed to playing jazz trumpet, studying the Jamey Aebersold method un
der Paul Finkbeiner, the lead trumpet player for the Paul Keller Ensemble.

Then at the age of 11, with the help of his grandfather he discovered the guitar. He learned quickly on his old SR guitar. He quickly discovered that he had a natural taste for blues phrasing, and his soloing abilities quickly blossomed. 2 years later, he had formed his first band, Spherical. It was through this band that he found the bass.

His journey into the realm of bass, began out of necessity and progressed into love of the bottom end. Since then, he has been collecting basses, playing, living and breathing bass. He now realizes the importance of a funky beat, a subtle line and most important of all A Tight Groove!!!

The benefit of studying under someone with a vast array of both talent and experience is clear.

*** Lesson Details ***
During his musical career Nicholas has played almost every style of music; from folk to experimental from jazz to rock. One thread holds true through all music, it has to groove.
During the course of a lesson he will cover a broad range of topics starting from the basics, and moving into ear training, sight-reading, theoretical knowledge and most important for bass players, groove. Just as every player has their own musical personality and voice, so to does every lesson that Nicholas gives.
In a supportive, patient environment, every lesson is custom tailored to the student.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Home: lessons in dedicated music room with piano and stereo, guitars/basses, cables/amps

*** Specialties ***
Jazz Studies major at Wayne State University. Has a firm understanding of music across both the classical and jazz idioms spanning multiple instruments.

About Travis
Hi,

My name is Travis, and I have been playing trumpet for 17 years. I have been teaching for 8. I love working with new students, and became more focused on private lessons during my Sophomore year in college. Speaking of which, I earned a Bachelors of Music in Trumpet Performance from the University of Maryland College Park.

While there, I played with the Wind Orchestra, Symphonic Orchestra and Jazz Band. I am also a regular performer with the Prince Georges Philharmonic.

As each student is different, so is my technique and teaching method. Generally, I have students work through the fundamentals of the instrument including fingerings, embouchure, breathing and scales. Once mastered, the more difficult obstacles such as range, dexterity, repertoire and endurance are approached. I do not work with a set schedule for s
tudents, and tailor the lesson plan for the student's growth and practice.

I am a passionate teacher and I work to understand each individual and help achieve the goals we set together. I love working with special needs and accommodations.

About Sandra
Hi, I'm Sandra and I have been teaching in the Bay Area since 2006. I have a passion for working with young students, especially those with special needs, in a fun and encouraging environment. I design individualized lesson plans and your child will have clear direction of weekly goals. I expect my students to work towards mastery and passion for themselves through their talents with the trumpet, and music in general.

I have backgrounds in music performance and psychology, and I use both to understand your child's needs and working styles engaging them to find the most progress out of lessons. I have a holistic approach combining music with students specific interests to form discipline to learning the trumpet.

How does your service stand out?
My studio requires students to practice a minimum of 30 minutes every day with wee
kly progress reports, weekly listening to music for their instrument with evaluations, semester auditions, and recitals. I require students to video record each practice session so I can verify practice time as well as provide suggestions to maximize efficiency. I encourage involvement with outside music ensembles and we take field trips to watch professional musicians. Any student with enthusiasm is welcome in my studio!!

What do you enjoy about the work you do?
I love getting to know all different students and seeing them grow. I look long term for satisfaction with my job, it barely feels like work. I get to make music daily with really cool kids, what could be better than that?!

What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I start wherever the student is. We work on fundamentals regardless of ability, and I assess what level the student plays to make a decision on what materials we use.

How did you get started teaching?
I started teaching when I was in high school to help my band director out. I always wanted to be the type of teacher that was similar to my mentors; compassionate, hard working, enthusiastic, and patient. I began teaching professionally when I was in music college and continued to enjoy working with all types of students.

What types of students have you worked with?
I have worked with students as young as 6 and as old as 70. I work with special needs in any form. I work with students that practice really hard to attain a specific goal and others who are only trying to get better for band music.

What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Find someone who can thoroughly answer your questions and will also be flexible to meet your needs. Make sure the teacher still takes enrichment classes to keep current with research, their instrument, and to help develop better and newer ways of teaching.

I offer in-person and online lessons ranging from 45-90 minutes.

Ms. Laverty has been my son’s private trumpet teacher since the summer of 2012. She is patient, kind and very supportive of his efforts in playing the trumpet. In large part, she is the reason that my son enjoys playing trumpet and continues to thrive as a musician.

From the beginning she tailored her lessons to include the music that my son was interested in and also added increasingly more complex music to work on and master.

Sandra has taped him playing during lessons to show him how and where he can improve in body position, quality of sound and other nuances. She regularly uses her laptop computer to show videos of performances that support the lesson and also assigns various Internet sites to view for exposure to other musicians and styles.

Sandra regularly provides opportunities for my son to perform in public. He has performed at the annual CMEA event at San Jose State University, and other smaller events where he played solo on stage. They have both joined in at a local café for practice in improvisation, as my son loves to play jazz. This has really helped in his jazz solo opportunities at school. She has also organized a quartet of student trumpet players to work together on various music pieces and then they all performed together for family and friends. This was a unique experience for the children to practice and play together and perform as a group.

My son is also interested in basketball and baseball, and Sandra has been very flexible in scheduling lessons to accommodate my son’s athletic and school schedules. After about 6 months of lessons, she offered twice a week lessons to capitalize on my son’s enthusiasm and increase the speed of musical advancement so his confidence soared and he wanted to play more because he liked doing something he felt he was good at. He kept this schedule for about a year and then back to once a week to allow for more time for other interests.

During middle school, my son played trumpet in both the Advanced Band and also Jazz Band classes. This past summer, Sandra again offered twice weekly lessons to get ready for his high school debut. As a result, he was chosen to play first chair in the high school jazz band. He was also one of only two freshmen that were accepted into the most advanced band class (also known at Wind Ensemble) at Lincoln High School.

I recommend Sandra Laverty, without reservation, for any trumpet teaching opportunity.

I have over 10 years teaching experience from beginner through professional level. I have had the privilege of studying with some of the top trumpet instructors in the world and want to share my knowledge and experience with my students. My mission as a teacher is to inspire students to learn the art of the trumpet through a growth and goal oriented approach. I encourage my students to think critically and reflect frequently on their own playing as well as the musical meaning of their pieces. Whether the student is preparing for All-State auditions, college auditions, solo and ensemble, is having chop problems, needs and embouchure change, or just starting out and wants to learn good habits and skills, I can help along the way.

About Philippe
I am a professional trumpet player and teacher of all levels. I have performed across the US, Canada, UK, and Europe with groups the likes of the Cabrillo Festival of Contemporary Music, the Miami City Ballet, Naples Philharmonic, Southwest Florida Symphony, South Florida Symphony, the Aspen Music Festival, the National Academy Orchestra of Canada, the Henry Mancini Institute, the Dartington Music Festival in the UK. I also premiered a concerto for solo trumpet called Fanfares for the Apocalypse by Rome Prize winner, Ken Ueno which can be heard in my videos.

I have had the privilege of studying with some of the best trumpet teachers and players in the world. I earned my Doctorate in Trumpet Performance from the University of Miami. I have well over a decade of experience teaching trumpet at all levels including repertoire, technical he
lp, and even chop rebuilds. I am familiar and have taught nearly all of the major pedagogical trumpet methods including Arban, Schlossberg, Stamp, Thompson, Franquin, Caruso, and of course, CIarke. I went through a major embouchure change in 2009 and have come from barely being able to play, to playing with professional groups and making a living as a trumpet player. I am proof that dedication and hard work do pay off and can result in a real career playing the trumpet, despite the odds.

As your teacher and guide, I will commit to seeing you succeed and provide you with the necessary tools to do so.

“…visionary and tireless trumpeter “ Edward Carroll

“Philippe is a person that sees no obstacle that cannot be overcome. In fact, he sees that obstacle as a play-toy to invent and to discover new innovations with creativity and aplomb.” Russell DeVuyst, former associate principal Montreal Symphony.

“Virtuosity was decidedly the order of the evening. . . .P. T. Barnum probably would have said that the ability to bear witness to such a breadth of skills would have made last night’s concert worth the price of admission. On the whole, I suspect I would have agreed with him.”

I have learned a tremendous amount from his experience and skills, and have both experienced his teaching abilities and seen the success he has had with many different students. If you are looking for a knowledgeable, highly accomplished, and extremely experienced trumpet teacher then look no further. Philippe represents the future of brass pedagogy, where a systematic approach to fundamentals triumphs over the traditional sink-or-swim model.

Hello and welcome to my studio!

I have been playing trumpet ever since I was a young elementary schooler and fell in love with music immediately. I officially began teaching private lessons in 2015.

When we start lessons, I will begin with breathing exercises as we need air to play trumpet. We will then work on developing proper posture, embouchure and making a nice sound. Later we will work on the more intricate aspects of trumpet playing like articulations and dexterity, while learning new songs!

I'm glad you have decided to take trumpet lessons and look forward to helping you make great music! So what are you waiting for? Let's get started!

My son has been taking trumpet lessons in our home with Andrew for several months and it has been fantastic. First of all, Andrew is always on time and ready to go and he communicates all the small details very well. Second, he is a great trumpet player and teacher. Andrew helps my son work on all aspects of the trumpet and he has really improved his overall understanding of the instrument. My son has been playing the trumpet for 7 years and he is still learning new techniques from Andrew. Finally, Andrew provides written notes and/or a follow up email with instructions for my son to work on before the next lesson. I really enjoy listening to their lesson. I would definitely recommend Andrew for trumpet lessons!

My playing has improved tremendously since I began taking lessons with him, and his lessons enable the learner to develop an awareness of the instrument as well as their own physicality while playing. Furthermore, Andrew takes great care to adjust each lesson in a way that is applicable and makes sense to each student he teaches. I am an avid brass performer and teacher in the greater Baltimore area, having played for over a decade. In lessons, we will work out of some of the most trusted method books, discuss fundamental playing techniques in an accessible and easy-to-understand way, and search for unique solutions to individual problems as I tailor my teaching method to your learning style. All ages are welcome.

About Zachary
Hello! My name is Zachary (or Zac for short) and I am a Baltimore-based brass performer and teacher. I have been playing euphonium and other brass instruments for 14 years. Currently, I am in my final year as a music education student at Towson University, where I study euphonium with US Navy musician James Hicks. In addition to euphonium, I am quite proficient on both trombone and tuba, and have taught trumpet and horn as well.

Currently, I play euphonium in the Towson University Symphonic Band and Towson University Tuba Euphonium Ensemble, trombone in a folk-rock style band, and am an avid solo artist. I also have two years of experience as a nationally touring member of the Troopers Drum & Bugle Corps. In addition to these experiences, I have performed with the Cadets2 Drum & Bugle Corps, the Baltimore Ravens Marching Band, and th
e Bushwackers Drum & Bugle Corps. In 2013, I was a recipient of the United States Marine Corps Semper Fidelis Award for Musical Excellence.

Outside of performing, I am an avid teacher in the Baltimore area and beyond. I have worked as an instructor with various high school bands, including Perry Hall High School, Rockville High School, and Urbana High School.

I've been teaching trumpet for 8 years and performing/touring professionally for 11 years. My lessons emphasize fundamental technique, creating good habits and, most importantly, making music! You'll build skills in music theory, ear training, and sight reading on your way to becoming a well-rounded musician and brass player. All my lessons are crafted to the needs and interests of each student. All ages and skill levels are welcome!

About Gregory
I'm the trumpet player, songwriter, and backup singer for Philadelphia based funk band, Swift Technique. The band has been my pride and passion for the last 11 years. I recently moved to Washington DC from Philly, but am still active with the band. I'm hoping to impact the local music scene here and learn new things from new musicians and students.

I graduated from the University of the Arts in Philadelphia with a Bachelor of Music in Trumpet Performance, with a minor in education. I've been teaching privately since 2011 and have been a successful touring musician since 2008. My band has performed all over the country with highly acclaimed acts like: Vulfpeck, Snarky Puppy, The Meters, Preservation Hall Jazz Band, Charles Bradley, Soulive, and Lettuce just to name a few.

My teaching philosophy centers around making music, backed by a
solid foundation in fundamental technique. Creating good habits early on will ensure the ability to express yourself in any way you choose later. I also take time in lessons to focus on music theory, ear training, and general musicianship. While these might not relate directly to playing the trumpet, they go a long way to making you a well-rounded musician. I teach all styles of music including: jazz, classical, funk, blues, soul, salsa, rock, and ska.

I get great joy and fulfillment from performing and playing and I hope to pass that feeling along to my students!
