My training in viola comes from distinguished performers and educators in the classical music community. I have studied with Lawrence Dutton (of the Emerson String Quartet), and Nicholas Cords (of Brooklyn Rider), Karen Ritscher (of Manhattan School of Music), and Nancy Buck (of Arizona State University). My teachers have been taught by some of the most eminent string pedagogues of their generation, including Dorothy Delay, Karen Tuttle, Lilian Fuchs, Harvey Shapiro, and Heidi Castleman. This broad survey of teaching styles and philosophies gives me a great breadth of knowledge which I apply to each student.
I have been teaching for over a decade in many settings. These include: my own private studio, TakeLessons, music stores, and performing arts studios.
Before earning my masters degree in performance, I was honored to be awarded a Teaching Assistantship for the viola studio of Professor Nancy Buck at Arizona State University. During my teaching appointment, I taught ...

Viola is the undersung hero of the orchestra, and I love to help violists learn this beautiful instrument! Though much of the technique of the instrument is the same or very similar to the violin, violists enjoy a great repertoire of solo pieces and high demand in ensembles, which I can help you discover for yourself. (Please see my violin profile for more information on experience and lesson style)
About Cieran
I love music, and I love helping other people find and develop their love for music! I teach all styles of violin and piano to ages 4 and up, with a strong emphasis on finding what kind of music each student enjoys and building a life-long love of music with solid technical foundations. I hold a

I love the viola; I'm primarily a violist and love nothing more. I would love to share my passion with you or your child!
I have a Master's degree in Viola Performance, and viola is my primary instrument. I have received extensive instruction on the minutiae of the viola, and can help you with any need that you many have!
I tailor my approach to each student. Some students require more technical work, some require interpretive. Both are fascinating and can be taught with structure and clarity.
About Martina
Hi! My name is Martina and I am a classically trained violist. For my background, I received a Master of Music from Roosevelt University, where I studied with Lawrence Neuman of the Chicago Symphony. She quickly assessed where I was with my playing and identified quick and easy technical practices to enhance my technique as well as took in my own personal goals. I feel super motivated to practice and look forward to my next lesson with her. I'm so glad I found her!"

Exceptional Violist, Masterful Teacher
Helen McDermott is an exceptionally talented violist who is also a masterful, empathetic teacher. She brings a truly unique combination of technical virtuosity, pedagogical professionalism, and psychological insight into the music studio. I know this from personal experience because I have greatly benefited from being one of her viola students.
Her vast experience as a professional violist gives her a wealth of technical knowledge, not only about how to play the viola but, more importantly, how to play beautiful music with this instrument. She has studied, and continues to study, different teaching methods, drawing from all of these approaches to develop a program of instruction designed to meet each student’s individual needs. She also connects empathetically with her students, creating an atmosphere of collaboration and mutual respect that alleviates anxiety, thereby allowing genuine learning to take place.
In short, her breadth and depth of expertise, in both musicianship and pedagogy, make her an ideal viola teacher who guides students on their path to realizing their full potential as a violist and as a complete musician."

Before Elisa moved to Ventura, CA, she was a master student and taught in IP piano school and Kwong Kow Chinese School in Boston, MA. My daughter, Sarina, was one of her students. My daughter loves her so much and made good progress when Elisa was teaching her. Elisa made Sarina relax and comfortable so that she was enjoying the learning process; she emphasized on skill and poses, she tried hard to help the students to get to the best they could. She is reliable as you can talk with her about the timing change and make up lessions. She came to our house to say goodbye and hug Sarina before she left. She is a great teacher that you can count on and you will enjoy her teaching."
