Kevin asked pertinent questions about my background and used that information to tailor the first lesson. He went beyond the scheduled 30 minutes to provide a complete and coherent beginning to my studies: the extra time did not upset my schedule and I appreciated his going beyond to get me off to a good start. Kevin had a lot of stuff to present yet allowed me to interrupt with questions, which he knowledgeably answered. His personality is relaxed and friendly. Observing him with another student before my lesson, I saw that he offered criticism considerately.
My first lesson was a good experience (4 stars). I don't know if he is the best ever (5 stars), but he must be darn close.

Mary O.

Saint Cloud, MN

About Mary

One of my earliest memories is of listening to my older sister practice her violin. My mom used to have her play for me when I cried. It always worked to help me feel better, and music has the same
effect on me to this day! I remember wishing I was old enough to play myself, and I was very excited when I started playing the piano when I was still in Kindergarten. Along with taking orchestra classes in school and attending fine arts camp over the summers, I took private lessons throughout high school. I have had the pleasure of playing with several orchestras and symphonies, including the Anchorage Symphony Orchestra and the Tifereth Israel Community Orchestra in San Diego. Although most of my training has been in classical music, I have expanded my horizons to include Blues, Rock, Celtic, and Country music. I have had a wide variety of experiences on stage and in the studio, and I have had fun sharing my knowledge with students of all ages!

*** Lesson Details ***
For the past year I have had the pleasure of teaching private violin and music lessons with Take Lessons and at the Chula Vista Academy of Music. While enjoying the benefits of being a musician and private music teacher, I have also spent the last twenty years working as an elementary school teacher. I currently have a Special Education credential, and most of my experience has been with teaching students, with special needs, in small groups or on an individual basis. My classroom experience has taught me to be patient and to persevere. I have been successful at helping many students overcome challenges to meet their potential.
My approach is positive in which I focus on student's strengths and give praise. The curriculum is simple and sequential so that students may build on prior skills. One of my greatest goals is that students feel successful every step of way! I believe my love of music is contagious.

*** Studio Equipment ***
one bedroom condo...big space in in dining room...keyboard, Yamaha...88 weighted keys

*** Travel Equipment ***
I would expect the student to provide an instrument, music, and a music stand.

*** Specialties ***
I was trained as a classical violinist, but I have experience with several types of music, including Blues, Rock 'n Roll, Irish, Country music.

Jacob J.

Saint Joseph, MN

About Jacob

I teach both academic subjects and guitar lessons.

For guitar: I have been playing guitar for nearly 20 years, in styles including rock, blues, folk, and finger style. I love playing songs by Le
o Kottke, Mumford and Sons, Chris Smither, Walk the Moon, The Killers, The Beatles, and roots music like bluegrass and folk. I like to keep things fun in lessons and focus on building my students love of music.

For academic lessons: I earned my Ph.D. in Sociology from Southern Illinois University in 2009, and taught at South Dakota State University in the Sociology & Rural Studies department since then. I have been teaching at the college level for nearly a decade, and love helping people learn! I can talk about difficult subjects in plain language, and help students who are just shy of the grade they want earn that "A." I have had many students who started out hopeless, but who were able to learn things they never thought they could, and get better grades than they ever imagined, with my help.

I have worked with all kinds of students, some with jobs and kids, some fresh out of high school, and some working on getting their graduate degree. Helping them learn, grow as people, and accomplish their goals has brought me joy and satisfaction as I watched them succeed. Many have gone on to earn a Master's or Doctoral degree, or earn jobs as police officers, business people, and more.

Really enjoyed lessons! Really wanted to learn songs by my favorite band and despite not being musically inclined, felt at ease and ready to learn. Jake was patient and really helped me be able to play my favorites.

Jacob J. has an amazing talent and ability as a teacher to explain things in ways that will make sense to a diverse group of students. He truly cares about each student and it shows in any class you take with him (in any field). Because of him I have pursued a field I never thought I would get into, which has helped me travel the world and has opened new opportunities for me, that I would have not had without the skills and knowledge I gained with him as teacher. Unless you do not like a fun and knowledgable teacher, I highly recommend Jacob J.

6 Tips for Singing and Playing the Piano at the Same Time
Artists like Billy Joel and Elton John may make it look effortless, but singing and playing the piano at the same time takes time and practice to truly master! Understandably, it’s difficult because you’re multitasking by "playing" two instruments simultaneously – your voice and the piano.
