Most teachers of Japanese do know grammar; the problem (or least it's a problem for me) is that they often have little actual interest in their own country's literature/culture/art. Therefore they rely on textbooks or supposedly relevant financial pages from Japanese newspapers. "Tsumararai desu ne." (Boring!) Mr. Toshi has the cultural background, education, and own personal interest that makes a lesson an important conversation and not just a series of exercises in grammatical structures and random vocabulary words. I am very fortunate to have found this teacher.

Toshi is calm and collected and so patient in his approach. I felt challenged to push myself right from the get go which is what I was looking for in pursuing a tutor. He gave a lot of great positive feedback as well which really helps motivate me. It has only been one lesson so far but I'm so excited to return next week.
