    About Tori S.

I am a certified tutor with the National Tutoring Association. I am a student at Sarah Lawrence College where I study writing and psychology. I excel at math and English. I helped teach my AP Statistics course. During high school I tutored fellow students in various levels of math from Algebra 1 & 2 through AP Statistics. I have also been editing work for 9 years. I have experience editing various types of writing, such as articles, academic papers, dissertations and theses, cover letters, college application essays and short answers, creative writing, blog posts, etc. I edit the writing for grammar, spelling, punctuation, consistency, structure, flow, redundancies, word choice, style, and more. I also provide my clients with feedback, comments/suggestions, and tracked changes which I am available to discuss. I also helped fellow students with writing and grammar. I was the editor of my high school literary magazine and helped students with editing. I also did a day of service in high school where I helped 1st graders with their arithmetic worksheets. I also have experience tutoring elementary students in reading, reading fluency, and writing. As a tutor, I tailor the techniques I use to the individual being tutored. People learn differently; it is important to use the particular student's strengths to help them understand and work through whatever they are struggling with. I am extremely patient and try my best to motivate my students and help them stay confident in their ability to work through anything!

    Experience

    Writing Tutor

    Oct, 2013 - Present

    College

When needed, I would help friends with editing papers, and would help them understand what could be written better and why, as well as why something may have been grammatically incorrect and what could be done to change that. *This was not with a particular organization, but rather was something I volunteered to do and the students I helped gave me positive feedback.

    Teacher's Assistant (Day of Service)

    May, 2013 - May, 2013

    High School

I participated in a day of service with my high school. I chose to go to an elementary school and help a first grade teacher. I was tasked with checking over student's math worksheet when they were done and helping them with any incorrect answers or any problems they were struggling with. I also sat down with each student and assessed their reading fluency. If the student was struggling over words, I would help them figure out how to say the word without telling them myself. We would start by sounding it out together, and then they would continue trying to put the word together themselves until they were able to say it. This was extremely rewarding and is something I look forward to helping students with more and more!
