Phonics with Mirey

Phonological awareness, the ability to recognize and work with sounds in the spoken language, is a major predictor of reading success! Kids who are strong in this become good readers. And unfortunately the inverse is true: kids who don't have strong phonological awareness, no matter how old they are, often struggle in reading. Phonological awareness helps students bridge the gap to phonemic awareness and phonics. Those are the ability to match sounds to letters and letter combinations. Those skills are the building blocks to reading. In my lessons, students will practice both phonological awareness and phonemic awareness, using some of the best curriculums out there! They will be identifying rhyming words, making multi-syllabic words, identifying beginning and ending phonemes, and identifying the number of words in a sentence. I will be using a leading curriculum called "Heggerty." I will also send parents a google document link which they will need to open for their students. The students will need to be able to simply drag letters (in a box) across the page. There is no typing involved, simply dragging the letters. I will be asking students to respond to my questions orally, and sometimes with hand motions. I will ask individual students to answer certain questions and make sure that everyone is engaged, participating, and having fun! Note: Students do NOT need to know all their letters and sounds to take this class.
