I teach math at an urban community college, where I have taught subjects ranging from basic arithmetic to algebra, geometry, calculus, and linear algebra. I'm also a parent to a young child, with whom I have lots of mathematical conversations. My teaching focuses on helping students to understand concepts internally, rather than just memorize and mimic steps to complete problems. My real passion in teaching is to help each individual person to take prideful ownership of their understanding of math, at whatever level, and feel joy and confidence in learning.
For my "day job" I work with a student body that is incredibly diverse, both in culture and in incoming abilities. Through this work, I have practice in being sensitive to every individual who comes into my classroom. I have a core belief that every student is capable of learning math at the highest level. I've taught many hundreds of students over the years, and I've never met one who has changed my mind on that belief.

I will work with you to help you take control of your own math understanding, and use that understanding to progress mathematically, for whatever your purpose. Whether it's to get through a math class that you're struggling with, or building up confidence to even take a math class, or even if you just want to chat about some math concept that has been bugging you for days.
I've been teaching math at a community college since 2010, and in various other places before then. I focus on creating deep understanding of concepts, and connecting that understanding to related concepts. I'll ask you a lot about how you understand things, so that we can work together to build a bridge between what you already know and what you're trying to learn. Math is best when it is creative and visual, so we will include as many visual aids as possible, possibly with me asking you to gather some blocks to arrange, or by screen sharing on some free software.
A note on lessons: while your homework may be a great jumping-off platform for inspiring our discussions, it's not a great use of our time to just sit and do homework together. If you are looking for somebody to help you complete your homework, there is almost certainly some free help on your school campus. We will be working together on building concept understanding. It's hard work, but I will support you, and it'll be so fun to progress!
