Expert Math tutor with more than 10,000 hours of experience

Mathematics is often so confusing and so boring, but it doesn't have to be that way! Math is not some mysterious subject that only a few can comprehend, but just another element of knowledge in general. As with any discipline, practice leads to proficiency, and that practice needs to be guided by an expert. No one gains mastery in any subject without guidance. The problem for many people is that they were only told what to do, but never told why to do it. For others, they were never presented with an easy-to-follow, step-by-step process for solving problems. I can help you unlock the mystery of mathematics and get you on the road to comprehension. In my time as a tutor and a teacher, I have instructed students at all stages of life and mathematical development: from third graders to adults in their 40s, from elementary math to college-level calculus and statistics. Online tutoring is my full-time occupation, so I can be particularly flexible with my time and meet students based upon their schedules. Without a large block of my time devoted to a routine work schedule, I can also be quicker in my responses to students and be more accommodating to those who might need "emergency" tutoring. Thanks to the power of an online platform, we can upload, view, and work on homework questions and review material, and you can save the screens for future reference.

    About Jonathan R.

I am a professional educator currently working as a self-employed online tutor. After a few years as a classroom math teacher, I transitioned to being a full-time tutor. Over the past seven years, I have tutored 500+ students for more than 10,000 hours in a wide range of subject areas. My specialties are mathematics (anything from elementary level to that of a college freshman), test preparation (SAT, ACT, GED, ASVAB, GRE), and writing (development and editing of essays and papers). Since I don't "go to work" for a predetermined time each day, I can meet students based upon their schedules. Preparing for a test means more than just being familiar with the subject material: improving one's score also requires the right test-taking skills, such as pacing, eliminating incorrect responses, strategic guessing, and alternative strategies. Although I was a certified teacher have a Master's degree in Secondary Education, I feel my biggest assets are my tutoring experience and my ability to connect with students. Summer is the perfect time to prep for the SAT or ACT and work on college application essays, as there is no burden of regular schoolwork to deal with. It's also a great time to get some extra help for the next school year: whether a student is a little behind or just wants to get ahead, summer is the time to get the necessary instruction. When the school year is over, I continue to work through the summer, meeting students' needs for online courses, test preparation, or simply brushing up on skills.

    Experience

    Professional Tutor

    Sep, 2015 - Present

    Self-Employed

Since September 2015 I have worked full-time as a math, test prep, and writing tutor. Most of my work flows through Wyzant, although I am an independent contractor who sets my own fees and makes my own schedule. In addition to my math and writing expertise, I have substantial experience preparing students for the SAT, ACT, GRE, GED, and ASVAB tests. Since March 2020 I have been tutoring exclusively online using the Wyzant online platform.

    Math Teacher

    Aug, 2012 - Jan, 2015

    Challenge Academy

Challenge Academy is a now-defunct alternative school in York, Pennsylvania that was administered by Three Cord Youth Services. Over my time there, I taught math to all middle-school and high-school students, covering the range of Pre-algebra to Algebra 2. In my third year with 3Cord, Challenge Academy was part of Hilda Goodling Impact Academy. During that stint, I was the sole teacher for two high-school boys who had been expelled from local public schools, so I was responsible for all their subjects.

    Secondary Mathematics

    Feb, 2012

    Pennsylvania Department of Education

After obtaining my Master's Degree in Secondary Education, I was certified as a secondary mathematics teacher in Pennsylvania. While certified as a math teacher, I worked full-time at Challenge Academy and part-time as a substitute in a number of schools. Once I started tutoring on a full-time basis, I chose to let the certification lapse in 2018, as I was committed to tutoring as a career.
