I have been teaching writing in college and high school for 25 years. I study the best ways to learn to write effectively in many genres. I have a tool box full of strategies for emerging writers to try out. My students report that I am honest and fair with my feedback, motivating them to take risks and make changes. They report that they finally understand writing as a process with steps that strung together seamlessly form a practice that they can make a routine. I love to teach writing, because I want people to communicate effectively.

About Jane H.

I'm a life-long teacher and learner who enjoys working with other people to help them write and read more effectively. I earned a Ph.D. and taught composition to college freshmen for 4 years, even training other graduate students about best practices. In this role, I definitely mastered the art of an argumentative essay.

But after a brief stint in college, I landed at Walt Disney Feature Animation, pitching ideas and managing the script-writing process. My bosses loved that I knew how to research, create proposals and outlines, and could articulate complex ideas in simple language. I worked with the most creative people in the movie business, and I picked up many strategies from them about the process that creates the best results. In this role, I became an edutainment expert.

I missed the classroom and ended up in a premier high school in Silicon Valley where I consulted beyond the classroom, coaching management professionals to develop better writing practices and products. For example, I tutored one young start-up CEO to craft emails that earned him goodwill amongst his burgenoning staff. I wrote blogs for C-level executives and white papers that featured their names as authors. In this role, I was a silent mentor and ghostwriter.

In short, I have experience with brief text all the way to dissertations. I also read the research into teaching writing most effectively. I also practice yoga, and many of the lessons from that passion apply to learning to write well.
