- Teaching since:
Hello! My name is Heather and American Sign Language has been a part of my life since I was in the 4th grade. I then took it as my Foreign Language in college and fell in love with this beautifully animated language and culture. I saw the world as never before through listening with my eyes and describing experiences with my hands, body and facial expressions. I graduated from an Interpreter Training Program soon after. Later, My husband and I traveled internationally to work with Deaf students where he quickly adapted, returning to the states to pursue a career in the profession as well. 10 years later and we have become fully immersed in the language and culture where many of our closest friends and our children's friends are native speakers.
Our passion is to teach everyone American Sign Language for Deaf individuals to gain access to world at large. We always say "The Deaf can not learn to hear the way we do, but ANYONE can learn sign language"
With my experience in the educational setting, I understand the need of individual interest in a topic in order to retain information and language. Therefore I use a common curriculum as a foundation but each student tailors the direction and pace in which we take that. I love recommending fun "extra-curriculors" to keep things interesting.
I look forward to working with you!
I worked in lower elementary setting providing communication for Deaf students and their hearing instructors and peers.
