    About Deniz M.

I'm a zoologist with an MS in Environmental Policy & Management with a Fish & Wildlife concentration, along with a number of specialist certificates and certifications. I also recently completed an MA in Art History & Visual Culture and am currently conducting research on intersections of natural history and art history, with a focus on animal iconography. My primary research interests include conservation biology (mainly endangered, extinct, and new species), Australasian fauna, taxonomy, ethnozoology, and animal iconography (images of animals in world art history and visual culture). In addition to being a volunteer naturalist, I have been a curator for the Encyclopedia of Life, a contributor for Birds of the World Online, a social media admin for TWS’ Women of Wildlife, and an alumni advisor for my alma mater's W-STEM (Women in Science, Technology, Engineering, & Math) chapter. I've had research accepted for presentation at academic conferences and publication in journals, and also share my travels and research informally with wider audiences via my Art History Animalia website and social media pages. I don't believe in talking down to or otherwise oversimplifying things at the expense of correctness for younger children, and like using my "Cool Science Words" to expose children of all ages to scientific terminology and nomenclature. I also don't censor material about natural animal behaviors and bodily functions, nor do I censor works of art. Lastly, I always teach science from the perspective of evolutionary biology.
