Currently a faculty member at the Lee Strasberg Institute for Theatre and Film in West Hollywood, I have been coaching young and professional actors in LA since 2014. A graduate of New York University’s Tisch School for the Arts (B.F.A, Theatre), I studied at the Experimental Theatre Wing (Alexander and Suzuki Technique) and Lee Strasberg Institute for Theatre and Film (Method Acting) before being awarded the coveted Ron Howard Fellowship. Post graduation, I trained at the renowned Maggie Flanigan Studio (Meisner Technique) before moving to Los Angeles.
With my diverse training background and over 12 years professional experience, my acting lessons gift students with a practical way of breaking down and presenting material consistently infused with vivid behavior. At the Institute I teach Self Taping, TV & Film Audition, Spoken Word, Script Analysis, Cold Reading and Character Development courses. My responsibilities include structuring the curriculum for each class, researching/distributing class materials, tallying attendance, and monitoring student progression throughout the course. Whether in television, film, theater, producing, writing or voice over acting, Carlton continues to cement himself as one of the most dynamic talents of his generation. Known for breathing humanity and dignity into often misunderstood characters, his television credits include ABC's "Castle", TNT's "Major Crimes", CBS' "Blue Bloods" and NBC's "Law & Order". His vast theater credits include Matthew Lopez's "The Legend of Georgia McBride" (Ensemble Theatre Company), August Wilson's "Two Trains Running" (Seattle Repertory Company/Arena Stage) and Dominique Morisseau's "Sunset Baby" (TheatreWorks).
As a voice over artist, Byrd has worked on numerous campaigns including those for McDonalds, AT&T, Comcast, Kmart, and Verizon. He is best known for his award nominated work on Good Morning America's Summer Concert Series. Most recently, he had the pleasure of voicing multiple animated characters on Nickelodeon's Loud House and Casagrandes.
Continuing to further his artistry, Carlton has extended his talents into the field of directing. In 2017, he directed and executive produced "Meat Puppet: The Filmed Experience", a streamed theatrical production aimed at raising money for the philanthropic group, Unusual Suspects, which "mentors, educates, and enriches underserved youth through the creation of collaborative, original theatre".
The California Basic Educational Skills Test™ (CBEST®) was developed to meet requirements of laws relating to credentialing and employment. The California legislation that established the CBEST directed the State Superintendent of Public Instruction, in conjunction with the Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC) and an Advisory Board consisting of a majority of educators from California classrooms, to develop the CBEST. The development of the CBEST included definition of the primary skills to be tested; test-item writing and review for relevance to the specified skill areas; field testing; a validity study focusing on the accuracy, fairness, clarity, and job relevance of each test item; bias reviews; standard-setting studies; and determination of the passing scores. Since the initial development of the CBEST, new test items have been developed by contractors and all items have been reviewed by committees of California educators to verify that they meet test specifications adopted by the CTC and are free of bias.Show More

I’ve been taking classes with Carlton in my 2 year Conservatory at the at the Lee Strasberg Institute as well as at New Collective in Hollywood and he's hands down one of the best acting teachers I’ve had so far.
Carlton taught me to work harder, think further and make stronger bolder choices and commit to the choices I’ve made in my acting.
He taught me how to dissect a script to have a further deeper understanding of the story, the subtext, the character and their relationships. He taught me how to build a character and the exercises that will help me in the process such as movement work, animal exercise, writing a character bio and so on. He has a deep understanding of vivid behavior and details that will make a scene or a character come to life.
He is a well all-around trained acting teacher and a super hardworking person in general which has a positive influence on your own work ethics and your personal goals.
What makes him unique as an acting teacher is that he is still active in the business himself. So not only is he a good acting teacher but he is also up to date with the industry.
From the moment I was introduced to Carlton, I began forming a newfound trust in my abilities as an artist and human being. He immediately encouraged me to identify with the intimate and practical needs of the characters I am taking on, as well as allowing myself to operate through an instinctual and connected modality of acting. His warmth, humor, and focused energy really opens up a space to tap into instinct, and breathe through the nature of these characters.
Carlton and I discovered an unconscious pattern I had been neglecting within myself: slipping into the most "secure" or "comfortable" approach, a pattern embedded in my instrument from working as a professional in an industry focused on cosmetics and appearances. However, there is no judgement with Carlton. There is only forgiveness in an effort to release these patterns, opening up space for furthering my discipline and strengthening my abilities. He always catches me when I slip, and effectively reframes the approach, geared towards authenticating my performance.
This transcends the realm of performance. This is an exercise of self-trust and holding myself accountable. This is a lifelong practice. His teachings speak to the diligence and vulnerability required to hone craftsmanship, this is building a strong body of my professional work as well as my interpersonal relationships. Most importantly, the relationship to the self.
He reminds me, "Anyone can be a good actor... Bringing yourself into the work is what creates originality".
Having worked with Carlton for over a year has refined me to a greater depth of being an artist not only as an Actor most of the times we get in our own ways and thus the doubt that creeps in.
He has always encouraged me to see beyond the generic choices and creating a vivid behaviour, getting out of your own head and judging the choices that actually are interesting and following up with those choices with a very specific 'cause and effect" beat to beat breakdown pattern which has helped me listen actively and created vivid behaviour.

Building a character has been the most fun with his guidance to follow up with every little nuance that helps building their physicality their cadence and helps you built a 3D character
