Award-winning, professional author, specializing in novels, short stories, and personal essays.  The ugly truth about writing is that it's hard work.  No one starts out as a great writer.  Sure, raw talent is helpful, but it only gets you so far.  The good news is that writing is a craft that can be learned; the even better news is that an experienced teacher can save you an enormous amount of time and frustration on the road to mastering the craft.  I tailor my lessons to fit your individual strengths and weaknesses as a writer; I always try to give you concrete, detailed advice, along with useful exercises to help you become the writer you want to be. I'm a novelist by trade, and have published five novels.  My first novel (LEAVE MYSELF BEHIND) won the Alex award from the American Library Association in 2004, and has recently been translated into Italian.  My second novel, THE BROTHERS BISHOP, has been translated into Dutch.  I previously taught writing classes for several years at the University of Iowa Summer Writing Festival, but now only do private lessons, as I find teaching one-on-one more rewarding.  In addition to my writing, I'm a professional musician, and I teach clarinet, saxophone, and bass guitar.
