Mathematics Minor

Able to assist with basic math up to Calculus 1. Emphasis on concepts not understood is priority.

I try to understand where the student is struggling and not understanding the concept. This includes walking through each step in the problem before arriving to the solution. This would ideally be done with multiple problems before I ask them to try on their own and we review it together. If while reviewing the problem I encounter an error, I would ask them what led them to this result. Once they provide me their thought process, I would rectify it by correcting them with the appropriate methodology and explaining why it's the correct approach. I would then ask if they would like to try another problem alone or we do it together. Once they are able to do problems alone and accurately, I would move on to the next topic that the client is confused on. The idea isn't for me to show off my knowledge and instead try to gauge where the student's strengths and weaknesses are, as the service is for them. The beautiful aspect to mathematics is occasionally multiple tools can be used to achieve the same result. Therefore, if they are struggling in understanding a certain concept, an alternative approach is to show a different tool to use for achieving the same answer. This of course, must be supplied with an explanation so that they understand the new tool. If the topic at hand has a limited toolset, then emphasis will instead be placed on rectifying the thought process as to how they come up with the solutions to each step within the problem using the conventional approach.

    About Austin D.

I am a Computer Engineer from University of Central Florida(UCF) that acquired a Bachelor's degree in addition to a Mathematics minor. I also worked at Siemens Energy in Business Process. In this position, teamwork was emphasized as we collaborated to get tasks done for our manager. Furthermore, I was in charge of granting access to third-party vendors so they can perform transactions with Siemens. This entailed great communication skills, patience, and understanding the root issue/cause, all of which are crucial to tutoring mathematics. I worked at this German company in the energy industry (they sold turbine parts) for 3.5 years while attending college. Before this position, I was a Learning Assistant at UCF. I would assist students in Calculus 1 in an auditorium setting with any clicker questions. Clicker questions are questions presented on a big screen and students would click in their answer with a clicker (it was multiple-choice) and was a part of their grade. Furthermore, proctoring of exams was required, and we would assist in homework questions during lab hours. Lab hours were hours in which students did homework and if they had trouble, we would have scheduled time to assist. Finally, a 1-credit course on communication and teaching was required for the job. I was also a private tutor at Varsity tutors for Calculus 1. I tutored in people's houses in-person. The main lesson I learned is to ask questions to find the confusion so that it can be addressed.
