About Harry
I have been teaching piano, music, movement and dramatic arts in the Northern Virginia area since 1993. Besides teaching lessons in students homes, I've taught in studios, public and private schools, camps and afterschool programs.

I teach all ages, but most of my Beginner students are between the ages of 7 and 12. I really enjoy working with this age group-- they are alot of fun and it' great to see how quickly they learn things!

Some of my students started with me as Beginners and are now teenagers, playing at the Intermediate Level. Besides playing more complex pieces, they also play popular songs they know and like. Music from the TV show "Glee" is a big favorite!

Some of my favorite composers are Anton Dvorak, JS Bach, Ludwig Von Beethoven, Scott Joplin, and Cole Porter. Some of my favorite musicians and bands are The Be
atles, U2, Paul Simon, Tori Amos, Alicia Keys, Coldplay, and B-52's.

*** Lesson Details ***
For beginners, I generally use the Bastien Beginner series starting at the Primer Level and going through to Level Four. Depending on the student, going through the beginner level can take anywhere from four to six years. I use a lesson book, supplemental song book which features concepts learned, and a Theory book for written homework. Within 3-6 months, starting at the Primer Level, student will be reading notes on the musical staff and playing short pieces with both hand together.

Intermediate level students work on repetoire pieces from classical, ragtime, modern, jazz and popular music.

*** Travel Equipment ***
Students need to have a piano or keyboard in their home

I am thoroughly background checked every year and work with local after school programs in the area.

Melody has done a wonderful job teaching my daughter who so confidently played 3 pieces and 1 duet piece with her. The recital was very organized and professionally done. I am continually impressed with her love, patience and dedication to her students. I would definitely refer her to anyone looking for a piano teacher.

Ms Melody is a great teacher. My five year old son enjoys his lesson and looks forward to coming weekly, not to mention the monthly play date Ms Melody offers to all her students which is really fun and helpful. From knowing nothing about piano to being confident at a recital in just five months is outstanding. Ms Melody is nice, patient, and has true love for her students.

About Yann-bor
Learn to play songs like Pachelbel's Canon, Beethoven's Minuets, Old Joe Clark, Soldier's Joy, Jingle Bells, A Thousand Years, You Raised Me Up, Vivaldi's Four Seasons and others! With my guidance and practice, you will set realistic goals for yourself and be able to accomplish learning any piece of music your heart desires. Whether you want to learn a specific piece to perform, improve your skills, or continue your musical journey, I have the materials to help you. Just send me a message of your purpose of learning, and I will create tailored lessons for your needs.

Having been professionally trained to teach classical Suzuki violin lessons, I gear individual lessons towards improving technique. I'll give practice 'homework' every week which you'll play for me the following week. Think of it as building a lego structure: we start with t
he fundamental pieces and eventually put them all together to form the finished product. For more advanced students, I work on developing musicality and expression in playing.

I started taking lessons since I was 5 years old, and learned classical music using the Suzuki method myself, so I will incorporate in my teaching the necessary pieces to learn specific techniques. There are a number of techniques you must learn in order to play well and once you learn them, you can expand your musical repertoire immensely. I teach all ages and levels, starting children at age 3. Children ages 3-5 can take lessons with a parent participating at all times. Children ages 6+ can take lessons on their own.

About Pete
My drumming adventure began when I was in elementary school, where I joined the school band. I soon branched out to marching band, learning the rudiments and developing stick control. Of course, I also started playing drum kit, both in school and with friends. Playing rock music for fun eventually lead me to drum circles, where I discovered the wide world of percussion. At this point, I started studying several instruments with world-class teachers, including Babatunde Olatunji on African djembe, Zakir Hussain on the tablas of India, and frame drumming with Layne Redmond. These great musicians not only demonstrated technical and artistic skill, but they also helped me to see that we are all connected by rhythm - we are surrounded by it and filled with it all the time. Day turns to night, the heartbeat moves our blood, the seasons tu
rn - these are just a few of the rhythms that people express musically in unique ways around the planet.

Soon I wanted to share what I had learned with others. This lead to the creation of Pangaea Percussion, an ensemble featuring drums from around the world along with a variety of melodic percussion, flutes, and didgeridoos. I also played with a Middle Eastern Folk / Jazz group called Slow Djinn Fez, and the new age jam band, Mandra. Each of these groups was asked by Reno's Pioneer Center Youth Programs to perform for schools and libraries in the region. Today I continue these school assembly programs with Petroglyph, a duet that includes ethnic instruments along with drum kit and electric guitar.

In the mean time, I started teaching drumming. Using my educational experience as a high school science teacher, I developed both private and group lessons that break musical concepts down into a series of components. Students are invited to pick up the pieces that fit their needs and abilities, and then we add layers to build skills and add variety. These lessons have been presented in a variety of settings, including dance studios, private homes, and music festivals such as the California World Music Festival in Grass Valley.

Whether you want to jam on the drum kit in our great American rock and roll tradition, learn interlocking polyrhythms from Africa, or explore complex cycles like 7-beat or 10-beat rhythms from India, I'd love to help you take your percussive skills to the next level!

Exercises for Practicing Guitar Chords

There are several ways to master the technique of changing chords, so let’s look at a couple of exercises using basic guitar chords. The basic guitar chords are C, D, Dm, E, Em, F, G, A, and Am. Some instructors add C7, D7, E7, G7, A7 and B7. The F chord is always the most difficult for the beginning guitar player because you hold two strings down with one finger. Ideally, you want your basic guitar chords to sound clean and crisp – no muffled strings. Keep practicing the individual chords un … Read More

Practice Tips: Vocal Warm-Ups & Technique
Structuring your vocal warm-ups and practice between lessons can make a huge impact on your success. Here, Bloomfield, NJ teacher Zachary B. shares some helpful tips... In my experience, many students make progress during a lesson and often return to the next lesson with the new skills forgotten. Merely practicing songs, without specific structure usually leads to singing the song repeatedly. While this does familiarize you with the song, it does not help you improve from a technical stan

How Much Does a Violin Cost?
It’s no surprise that when you decide to take violin lessons, you need a violin! It's common for absolute beginners to rent a violin for a few months until they are sure they are ready to take the next step of buying their instrument. If you are in this stage, your next question is likely this: how much does a violin cost? Although violin prices can run the gamut from $100 to $100,000 and more, as a beginner, you need an instrument that suits your current abilities without being too pricey. 20 Different Types of Guitars & The Legends Who Played Them [Infographic]
While certain types of guitars are standard in modern culture, the instrument has a wide variety of expressions that is nearly impossible to tame.
