I've been playing and loving music for well more than half a century, now. I got started in second grade when my grandpa brought home a little violin one day, and I've been at it ever since. I was fortunate to take lessons for more than ten years with Carita Page, a teacher who was very warm, encouraging, and caring. I do my best to pass that on to my students in addition to the technique of playing and the theory of music, fascinating as those are.
I feel that playing in groups is very valuable experience for students and gives you a side of music that private lessons alone cannot. I encourage students to look for opportunities to do that. To help provide those opportunities I organized the Cranbury Scout Band, one of very few continuously-operating Scout bands in the country, which I have directed for more that ten years now.
I've also been on the staff of several Jamboree Scout bands.
*** Lesson Details *** Every student is a different individual and learns in different ways. I try to make lessons as interesting and as useful to each student as I can, and include different things based on your interests and capabilities. Most students find duets are fun, so I include them often - both duets with the same instrument you are studying and duets with other instruments as well so you can learn the sound of such combinations. I encourage you to "play with your ears" as well as your fingers, to become a critical listener to your own performance and to decide whether you sound the way you want to sound.
I encourage students to try different things to become a more rounded musician. This might be something closely related - a flutist trying the piccolo or a clarinetist trying the bass clarinet. Or, it might be further afield - a flutist trying the guitar or a violinist learning movable Do and solfeggio singing. Every aspect of music is good to know.
*** Studio Equipment *** My music studio is in a separate building - actually a renovated barn about two centuries old. The studio contains a piano and all the other instruments that I teach, and is roomy enough not only for private lessons but for musical groups up to about ten. I have many other resources there as well, including files of music, a small music library, and a computer that we can use for many purposes.
*** Travel Equipment *** Students need their instruments, music, and stands. I bring my own instrument.

I offer my flute students of all ages and levels inspiring and interesting lessons based on classical repertoire, exercises and studies from from the Western European traditions of mostly the French school of flute playing, but also borrowing from the English and German traditions.
I work with my students to develop and improve tone quality and pitch control. I guide them through Moyse, De La Sonorite, and Trevor Wye's Practice Book 1 on Tone and note bending exercises. While guiding my students through exercises, etudes and pieces, I strive to sharpen their listening skills by drawing their attention to fuzzy tone, faulty pitch, uneven fingers etc. I use tuners and metronomes in my lessons to encourage these skills and to teach my students how to practice to get great results.

Originally from Massachusetts, I have been teaching children and adults flute for over 20 years. I teach from the very beginner student to the very advanced and I have additional training in the Suzuki Method which is especially helpful for beginning young children. I am primarily a classical flute teacher with extensive experience playing in various classical music settings.
My approach is friendly and patient. As I get to know my students, I can better guide them to accomplish the goal of learning flute but, in the process, I never lose sight o the person whom I am teaching. It has to be a pleasant experience as well as challenging. I have learned throughout the years when to relax my expectations of perfection and when to intensify them. I am looking for a good attitude in my students. My students come to me trying their best during
the lesson time and also making time in their schedules to practice. Every student is different and has different goals. I consider the differences while I am teaching them. My younger students don't usually know how serious they are about the instrument. For them especially, it has to be fun and interesting. I make every effort to combine my students in small chamber music groups for recitals. Nearly all of my students participate in regular studio recitals with a pianist provided to accompany them.

Our son attended a neighborhood concert and was struck with the idea that he’d like to learn to play the flute. We knew absolutely nothing about flutes at that time, but we consider ourselves so, so fortunate that Frannie came to us by recommendation.
Frannie is fun and has a great sense of humor. She is endlessly patient and relaxed, but also firm when she needs to be. She always keeps the music interesting for him – for example, after a period of working hard on the pieces in the Suzuki Method repertoire, she encourages him to mix it up and play some things just for fun, like the popular themes to Star Wars and Harry Potter.
Our son, now 9, has been studying with Frannie for almost a year now, and I cannot believe how much he has grown and improved in such a short amount of time. Frannie inspires him to play his very best; he works hard to emulate her gorgeous tone. He absolutely loves his weekly lessons, he looks forward to her student recitals, and he is motivated to practice every day.

I took lessons with Frannie for more than ten years, starting at age 4 in an introduction to music class at the Brooklyn Music School. Through her I found not just a great love for music but a lens through which I discovered and learned about the world. With Frannie, once a week for nearly my entire childhood, I would learn to practice and work at a piece or phrase, or to interpret and have and opinion on music I played, or to play like I mean every note, and so on endlessly. Those skills were some of the earliest and most important lessons I had about how to live and enjoy my life, and art, and how to work hard, and care about what I do for my own sake and no one else's. And I don't believe just any teacher could have done that for me. Since moving on I have often felt a different excitement and deep understanding of music than many of the peers I met who have spent far more time than me studying music.
I'm still a musician. I graduated recently from Bard College with a degree in music and have since played onstage in a very successful off-broadway musical. I've played in many orchestras including with graduate & conservatory students at Bard, with the New York Youth Symphony Orchestra, and at LaGuardia High School (formerly Music & Art). I have moved on to other instruments, and forms of music, but I credit Frances not just for showing me how much I love music but for teaching me in many ways how to enjoy and get what I want from life. I can't recommend her enough.

My daughter Coco studied with Frances for a number of years. Without question Francis was the best music teacher Coco ever had, and she's had quite a few.
Francis is generous, creative, and inspiring to work with, she has the perfect balance of qualities that a music student needs. She's highly motivating and makes demands of her students which stretch them to achieve their full potential, yet she never pushes past their limits; Coco never felt stressed by her practice but always wanted to fulfill the expectation of excellence which Francis instilled in her. Flutist Sarah Shin is a vibrant performer, educator, and collaborator. As an educator, Sarah is Co-President of the New Jersey Flute Society and is on faculty at the Rutgers University Mason Gross School of the Arts Extension Division as flute instructor and chamber music coach. As a Co-President of the New Jersey Flute Society, she will be hosting world-known soloist, Marina Piccinini, at the 2019 New Jersey Flute Fair. She has given masterclasses and workshops at universities and conventions all over the US, such as Princeton University, University of Washington, Bridgewater College, University of Virginia Flute Forum, Utah Valley University, and The Mid-Atlantic Flute Convention. During the 2016-2017 school year, she was on the Flute Faculty at the Center for Musical Excellence in New Vernon, NJ. She also served as the Director of Admissions. This year, Sarah will be performing and giving masterclasses at schools such as University of North Carolina Greensboro, Lamar University, Ferrum College, Texas Christian University Flute Day, and more.
Along with a substantial teaching and performing schedule, Sarah is an active chamber musician and orchestral musician. This year, she has played with Amarillo Symphony Orchestra, Virginia Symphony Orchestra and Virginia Opera. She is the Principal Flute of Houston Serenade Project, a chamber series founded in Houston, TX. She is also a founding member of the Emissary Quartet (EQ), founded in 2009. In November 2016, the Emissary Quartet premiered a work by Annika Socolofsky, which was made possible by a grant from the Fromm Music Foundation at Harvard University. EQ was quarterfinalists in the 2016 Fischoff Chamber Music Competition and was the only flute quartet to have competed within the last seven years. They also performed at the National Flute Association's 44th Convention in San Diego, California and the 2018 BMI Classical Music Awards in New York City. EQ are recipients of grants from the Friends of Flutes Foundation, Inc. and NewMusic USA.
Sarah received her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Flute Performance from Carnegie Mellon University School of Music, Master of Music degree in Flute Performance from Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, as a Barbara and David Jacobs Scholar, and Doctor of Musical Arts degree from Rutgers University. She is greatly indebted to her teachers Jeanne Baxtresser, Bart Feller, Thomas Robertello, Judy Grant, and Alberto Almarza.

Hello! I am currently in my first year of my Masters at NYU where I am studying flute performance, where I am studying under Keith Underwood and Soo-Kyung Park.
