As a retiree who has recently returned to piano after a decades-long hiatus, I knew I’d need a teacher with experience teaching adults. Semyon is proving to be excellent. He is a skilled musician and teacher whose approach combines enjoyable piano pieces, exercises for agility and the fundamentals of scales and theory. He is patient and responsive to what I want to accomplish. I have learned in each lesson, seen improvement each week, and enjoy the diversity of assignments. In short, i’m having a grand time and highly recommend him.

About Dennis
I have been teaching guitar for 25 years in the Washington DC metro area. I work with students 12 years of age and up, but I am especially experienced at teaching adult students regardless of whether they are beginners or have previous guitar experience. I have performed in acoustic Celtic, new age, funk, progressive rock, fusion and contemporary jazz groups and am currently performing regularly as a solo acoustic guitarist. I have composed over 40 works for solo guitar as well as numerous pieces for small jazz bands. I have played on numerous CDs including my most recent solo CD 'DARK MATTER'.

*** Lesson Details ***
I tailor the lesson materials to suit the interest of the student but I am dedicated to teaching students at any level to learn to better understand the fundamentals of the language of music. My teaching focuses on critic
al fundamentals of guitar technique including chords, scales and rhythm guitar playing as well as the art of improvisation. A significant amount of time in the lessons is spent actually playing with the students so that the technical concepts are put to use in real music situations. To further the student's understanding of music I frequently teach elements of music theory to those who are interested.

*** Studio Equipment ***
I have guitars and amps available for student use although I prefer that the student bring their own instrument. I also have all the needed accessories, cables, stands etc.

*** Specialties ***
Adult students (and older teenagers ) whether beginners or experienced are a particular specialty of mine. Adult learners want to be treated as adults and often times benefit greatly from a more mentor oriented approach to teaching. I like to describe myself as both a teacher and a coach so as to emphasize that the student and I are on the same team sharing the goal of improving their guitar playing and musicianship. We are both on the same path of musical discovery. I am probably just farther along on that path with insights and knowledge that will hopefully help them along their way.

Dennis was my instructor and is a bit modest about his experience. He taught me on my mom's crappy nylon stringed spanish acoustic guitar back in the 80s. I hope he reads this and remembers the little studios at Fox's Music in Falls Church. He patiently taught me Rick Springfield songs, probably against his taste and better judgment. Anyway, he got me started in my teens and I'm still playing some of the tunes he taught me (plus a few hundred others) on a slightly nicer guitar these days, in my 40s. Keep rockin', Dennis, and thanks for helping spark a hobby I still enjoy decades later!

About Mathew
I've been teaching sitar since 2013 and my students have gone on to develop a love for Indian classical music and culture. Within the first few lessons, you'll be properly holding the sitar and playing notes and phrases. Then, we take particular ragas and begin layering in raga and tala theory and more advanced techniques. My greatest joy is taking a student who started with no musical experience and getting them to the point of successfully performing on stage with tabla accompaniment.

Matt is a joy to have as an instructor. He’s very experienced and knowledgeable in not just the sitar itself, but how best to teach it. He figures where you are at, what you need, and helps you to set realistic goals for yourself. I would highly recommend him as an instructor! Additionally, I really appreciated his flexibility and willingness to help me continue my lessons when I lost my job which necessitated a move across the country and he was willing to try online courses. I think you definitely need an in-person foundation but the online classes have been really great and I’m so glad we could continue our lessons!

About Rebecca
I studied classical piano for 13 years and have played in the National Piano Playing Auditions starting in 2002. I have earned the Paderewski medal for over ten years of receiving superior ratings in the auditions and a diploma in music from the National Piano Playing Auditions.

I have also served as the music director for my church where I played for Sunday services as well as led the choir.

Currently, my students are between the ages four and thirteen and I enjoy teaching all of them.

I enjoy playing a variety of music from classical to country and my goal is to help my students pursue learning to play the piano. And also to help them enjoy music and playing as much as I do.

If you have any questions please feel free to ask me.

Thanks,
Rebecca

We had a first lesson with Rebecca and it went really well. Rebecca is personable and nice and was patient and encouraging with our 8-year-old daughter. She was on-time (early actually), and took the time to evaluate our daughter and speak with us when the lesson was over. She was here longer than the lesson time and was not rushed to leave. We were very pleased and look forward to more lessons with Rebecca.

I have been playing the cello for almost twenty years, and I have been giving cello lessons for the past five years. The age of my students ranges from 7 years old to 76 years old, and the level of playing also varies from a true beginner level to intermediate and advance levels. Prior to the first lesson, I always ask my students what their goals are for taking lessons with me. From there, I create a specific curriculum for the students. Everyone is different and we all respond differently to situations based on our age, personality, and past experience. I do my best to teach in a variety of ways according to each student’s needs and goals.
My teaching goal is to create a trusting and enjoyable learning environment for my students. I also believe in the importance of fundamentals. Everything builds on top of a good and solid foun
dation. With that being developed gradually in the process, students will eventually be able to explore the musicality aspect freely.

Native Taiwanese cellist Katy Chiang began her music journey first on the piano at the age of six, and the cello when she was eight. She showed a talent in cello early in her studies and was a prize-winner of several competitions in Taiwan. Ms. Chiang received her Bachelor of Music degree in Cello Performance from the University of Maryland College Park with a full merit-based scholarship, studying under David Teie, Peter Wiley (Guarneri Quartet), and Evelyn Elsing. She continued her education by pursuing her Masters degree in Cello Performance at UMCP under Professor Eric Kutz’s guidance, and she received her Master of Music degree in 2018. Ms. Chiang performs with various ensembles in the DC and Baltimore areas. Her international performances include concerts in Italy, Slovenia, and Taiwan. Some of the cello and chamber masterclasses that she participated in were led by Peter Wiley and Michael Tree (members of the Guarneri Quartet), Amit Peled, Darrett Adkins, Kenneth Slowik, the Tempest Trio, Miami Quartet, and Quatuor Danel. In 2018, Ms. Chiang was awarded a full scholarship to attend the Wintergreen Music Festival in Virginia. In 2017, she received a generous scholarship to participate in the International Music Festival of the Adriatic in Duino, Italy.
Ms. Chiang is also a passionate cello teacher, a freelance musician, and the cellist in the Fairmount String Quartet. Besides teaching privately, she is on cello faculty at Howard Community College in Columbia, Maryland.

I am a recorder player, recorder and French teacher, cultural anthropologist, and a big coffee lover. I come from Zlín, a small town in the Czech Republic, where I started to learn the recorder at the age of 6. I studied at the Conservatory of Evangelical Academy in Olomouc with Jitka Konecna and graduated in 2017. During my conservatory studies, I performed with the recorder ensemble Flauto Dolce and participated in workshops and Early music masterclasses with well-known recorder players, such as Alan Davis, Jostein Gundersen, Saskia Coleen or Ashley Solomon. I had also an opportunity to extend my music experience during two years spent in France where I studied with Sabine Weill and Agnes Lacornerie. Since 2005, I was a member of the group Marnatosnaha, playing various genres, as medieval, renaissance, folk, and christian. Marnatosnaha
performs regularly in folk and medieval festivals in the Czech and Slovak Republic. Currently, I am a member of the Washington Recorder Society and the recorder ensemble Sine Nomine. In addition to my music background, I obtained a Bachelor degree in the Culture Anthropology and French philology, and a Master degree in European studies.

I have him to thank for getting me started, and I continue to improve with what he taught me in mind! If you’re looking for a teacher who will teach you while breaking down the technique, he’s definitely your guy!

I am a fiddle, mandolin, and guitar player with a passion for bluegrass and old time music. Over my years of learning to play this music, I have been taught by many amazing teachers and mentors, which has inspired me to want to teach and mentor other musicians.

My students can expect to learn whatever kind of music they are most interested in, or if they prefer, I can choose some music to start them out on. I have experience in learning multiple styles of music from various teachers with different teaching styles, which gives me the ability to explain things to my students in many different ways to ensure they fully understand.

Some examples of things students can benefit from lessons with me include: expanding repertoire, ear training, music reading, improvising, jamming, music theory, and technique.

I am very energetic and enth
usiastic, I love to teach! I am looking forward to meeting you soon and hope you can learn something valuable from me!
