Gain a perspective about rhythm that no one else has! Learn a variety of hand drums to build a more holistic view of rhythm!
I received my MFA and BFA from California Institute of the Arts in both World Music and North Indian Classical Music.
I teach the following drums:

Frame Drum: A very open-ended instrument with a delicious pallet of colors and sounds that is highly adaptable in almost any musical settings. It grooves, it sings, and it comes from all cultures all over the world!

Riq: A lively Egyptian tambourine that uses a variety of finger and shaking techniques to create exciting grooves on the drum head and jingles.

Kanjira: A small single-handed South Indian hand drum that utilizes only two sounds to create epic skyscrapers of rhythmic improvisation. The drum a split-hand technique that allows for fast, fiery, aggressive, and virtuosic phrasing. A drum language called Solkatu is used to teach and memorize repertoire.

Orange Blossom, Mississippi Sawyer and Devil's Dream are a few of the basic fiddle songs I like to teach. The key to Fiddling is being able to play in tune and fast with a few basic rhythm patterns. I teach theory, scales, rhythm, pattern recognition, how to work with a metronome from slow to fast, proper bow grip and placement as well as proper posture for the violin.

Born with perfect pitch, I started playing the violin and piano at the age of four. I am a classically trained violinist. Music is my biggest passion and I am currently auditioning for graduate programs. I did my undergraduate training from the Boston Conservatory and Berklee College of Music. I received scholarships from both institutions. I also hold a Bachelor of Science degree from University of California San Diego (UCSD). My past teachers include violinists from the Boston Symphony Orchestra and the concertmaster from Indianapolis Symphony.

I wholeheartedly understand that studying and understanding an instrument and its complexities is challenging, but it can also be incredibly rewarding and fun! It is a great way to express oneself and connect with others. I believe in incorporating music theory and ear training into learning the instrument, especially at a young age. I care deeply about each student's need and desire in terms of musical growth and promise to make the lessons

"Erik is exactly what I've been looking for in a voice teacher. I came to him with fifteen years of training and practice in theatrical stage performance, but not knowing how to get over my blocks, and harness my vocal power as a singer. Through deceptively simple exercises he's taught me how to use my voice in ways I never have before.

His understanding of music is expert, and as we work through musical notation I learn more about the art. The songs he chooses for me to work on are often the perfect challenge, classical arias, which I never thought I could do before we started training together. He has a sharp eye and ear for detail, keeping me from slipping into old habits, and he is as gentle as a lamb as he teaches me to be the Diva I've always wanted to be.

Fantastic teacher, and lovely human!"

As a singer myself, I have to develop discipline and really strong practice habits to stay on top of my game. I have had the opportunity to study with great musicians and singers throughout my life, and they all have something in common.
