Not only do I have certification in specifically private lessons, but I have a very wide range of experience. I have played classical music, quartet music, new compositions, avant-garde pieces, and also in jazz and rock bands. I taught music professionally in public schools for 5 years, and I've been teaching privately for 7. I'm an active professional performer, as well as a composer, and the former principal violist of The Parker Symphony.

About Andrew

I love music, and I love teaching music. I have been actively involved in the music industry since 2008, performing in classical concerts, quartet performances, and even rock and indie bands. I love passing my expertise on and igniting a passion for playing in others.

I have a doctorate in flute performance and teach students of all ages and levels. I cover topics from developing proper form to producing a beautiful tone, creating own musical ideas, performing with self-confidence, developing a helpful warm-up, and preparing for an audition. Many of my students have made honor bands/orchestras, won competitions, and pursued music in their undergraduate/graduate degree. I tailor all lessons for the students and we work together to find the best curriculum for them.

Learning to play flute is not only learning how to be disciplined in your art, but also learning how to be creative and share music with your community. I hope to help you refine your technique as well as exploring all kinds of repertoire for the flute!

I received my Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Flute Performance from Carnegie Mellon University School of Music, Master of Music degree in Flute Performance from Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, as a Barbara and David ...

I highly recommend Sarah. She has excellent skills for any teacher - she's encouraging, knowledgeable and patient. I'm an adult who played piano years ago and always wanted to play the flute but I was frustrated, squeaky, out of breath, and out of tune. With a few weeks of lessons I'm further along than I was trying to teach myself over years.
I had years of serious music study with critical music teachers who made me embarrassed about mistakes and dread my lessons. With Sarah, the learning is fun and I now look forward to every lesson.

Music can also integrate our mind, body and soul. I work with students on all levels. We will break thinks down into manageable bits and bring it back together and synthesize it into a whole.

Great online lesson! I haven't played the oboe in 20 years. Prior to my first lesson with Grace, she provided contact info for a reputable oboe dealer as well as a source of reeds - so I would be ready to get started. During my first lesson, I played a few different oboes I had on trial from the oboe dealer. I played, and we discussed the pros and cons of each. Grace also suggested ways to improve my embouchure, as well as relaxation techniques for holding my instrument - to avoid fatigue. I was pleasantly surprised at how much ground we covered during the first lesson!

I have made amazing progress in just a week thanks to Grace getting right to the heart of the matter, even to the point of helping me with an online repair.

"OMG! Such a great teacher! Jay is VERY patient, accommodating, easy going and overall NICE.

We look forward to having him come to our home to do private lessons with our 8 year old daughter every week.
He speaks her language and knows how to refocus her in such a creative, positive way.

She is learning at an accelerated rate, as Jay is really working to instill the basics so that she has a thorough understanding before moving forward. They do a lot of repetition and recall, and he leaves her with homework that she is happy to work on throughout the week.
We have booked Jay for more classes and will continue to work with him indefinitely!

Thank you for providing us the opportunity to find Jay,Take Lessons! BEST decision ever!"
