About Glynis
Glynis has been reading music since before she knew how to read words. Her mother started teaching her piano lessons at age 3, and she started taking voice lessons at age 7. She learned from an early age to practice every day. She has taught all levels and ages of piano and voice for many years. Glynis specializes in jazz voice, but has a very strong classical and musical theatre background. She is an arranger, composer, educator, and singer. She received her AA in Professional Music from SWCC (school for music vocations), her BA in Jazz Studies: Vocal Performance at CSU Sacramento, and her Masters in Jazz Studies: Vocal Performance at the Bob Cole Conservatory at CSU Long Beach. She teaches college and high school vocal jazz ensembles as well as many private students in many areas of music.

My teaching philosoph
y is to have a safe, positive, fun, and effective learning environment for all of my students. I believe it is important to be a well rounded musician, therefore I love my students to have a solid understanding of what they are doing. I strongly encourage all of my students to learn theory along with piano or voice, so they understand what they are doing. Each student is unique, therefore each student has a different lesson plan. I do expect that my students will practice during the week in order to grow, since this helps them reach their goals. I do let students pick most their own repertoire, since it is very important for them to be motivated and enjoy their assignments during the week. I can teach from early Baroque music to modern day and everything in between. Music is expression, therefore I believe it is very important for my students to love what they are working on.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Lessons are in my house with my upright Yamaha piano.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I can bring a keyboard, but it is necessary to have a piano or keyboard at home to pracitce on if you are a piano student.

*** Specialties ***
I specialize in jazz voice, with a strong background in classical and musical theatre. I also specialize in piano, music theory, songwriting and arranging.

She's super awesome. She completely understands musics, which comes in handy because she'll teach you some theory from time to time during a lesson. And it's a huge plus that she's really understanding and nice.

Glynis is the best teacher! As an adult student, I have unhappy memories of childhood instructors with punishing demeanors, who would give you a hard time with every mistake. Glynis is the most supportive, encouraging teacher I've ever had. I especially appreciate her rigorous background (Master's Degrees in music, a lifetime of piano and music theory) and her familiarity with the pieces I'm interested in learning (Mozart, Beethoven, Debussy, Bach, Chopin). She has introduced pieces to me that I hadn't heard before, that I now love to play. It's so nice to be able to sit at the piano and play something that actually sounds like an adult playing!

Glynis is very adept at tailoring her teaching methods to what I need on that particular day. Sometimes I haven't had a chance to practice as much as I'd like, and she is very patient, helping me based on where I am in that moment. When I do have the time to work more diligently on a piece, she listens thoughtfully, praising the good parts and offering gentle suggestions on how I could improve. She sometimes will paint visual pictures for me of how the music should sound ("make it sound like children running through a meadow"), which is silly but also useful! Glynis knows how to bring out the best in my playing, and shows genuine enthusiasm when I master something hard. My playing has dramatically improved over the past few months, and I've really enjoyed spending time with Glynis at the piano.

I'd recommend Glynis to any adult looking to improve their piano skills. She is absolutely fantastic.

About John
I've been playing music for over twenty years as a brass player, pianist, guitarist, composer, and electronic musician. I've studied and performed across the country—starting in Seattle, then New York and the northeast, and finally here in Los Angeles.

As a performer, I have trained and play extensively on the French horn, piano, and guitar. I perform in a variety of styles—from classical to jazz, pop/rock styles, and modern and experimental music.

As a composer and sound designer, I work in a variety of settings, from composing for orchestra, string quartet, percussion, and groups of all shapes and sizes, to designing sound for theater and film.

I earned my Bachelor's degree at Bennington College in Vermont and my Master's degree at CalArts. I play all around LA as a freelance orchestral musician, in my brass quartet, a studio h
ornist (recorded on will.i.am's last album, The Grasshopper Lies Heavy, and with Horse's Mouth, to name a few), and in various other groups. I have taught at Bennington College, Summer Sonatina Piano School, Sage City Symphony's Young Composers Project, CalArts, Barnsdall Park's Junior Art Center, and Santa Monica Music Center. I have been teaching privately since high school and love working with students to meet their individual goals in music.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I provide my own instrument for demonstration and group playing when applicable. I provide sheet music and method books for use in lessons or temporary loan. I expect students to have their own instrument and music stand for use during lessons. If using electric guitar, they should have their own amplifier. In theory or songwriting lessons, they should have their own staff paper. I ask students to purchase their own method books and music when needed.

I am a professional producer, singer, guitarist, keyboardist, songwriter, saxophonist and recording artist. I also have DJ'ed for over 15 years starting as a radio DJ at the University of Kansas from 2002-2006.

Ableton Live and Production students can expect to learn how to build, arrange and finish entire songs from start to finish. This experience will leave the student inspired, and aware of what it takes to create songs in the recorded format.

My love for a wide array of different styles keeps me listening to many different styles and drawing on many different eras of music and I love to continue exploring new ways of making and understanding music. I look forward to meeting you and helping you t

About Shagorika
Hi Im Shagorika! I'm a vocal performance student at Musicians Institute, the world's leading contemporary music school in Los Angeles, CA! Prior to this I trained with renowned vocalists and learnt both Western as well as Indian Classical music.

Being a student myself for almost a decade, I know that every student learns differently at their own pace. My aim as a teacher is to work specifically on each individual students goals and preferences. I optimize the classes with students by warming them up in the beginning and slowly progressing to areas that need work in specific such a breath support, proper posture and technique, stamina, voice projection and song delivery, relieving stress in order to sing without any strain to the vocal chords and finally performance.

I strongly believe that communication is key when it comes to learnin
g with me. I encourage all my students to express anything that's on their mind, to share with me any of their insecurities and weaknesses so that we can work specifically on those areas and get to the root of the problem.

Looking forward to helping you understand your voice better and make the most of the rare gift you've been given!
